Purim Party
March 17, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm PDT
Join us March 17 to celebrate Purim! On this holiday we remember our courageous Queen Esther, the unlikely heroine who chose to risk her life to save her people.
For such a time as this: While we are excited to celebrate Purim, our hearts have been heavy with the current crisis in Ukraine. Ukraine has a long, rich Jewish history and identity, both beautiful and complicated– and often tragic.
At this time, we are struck by a certain level of parallelism that exists between the current events happening in Ukraine and the story of Purim– most notably in the figure of President Zelinksky, the unexpected Jewish hero that has risen to lead his people against those who would seek to destroy them.
It is traditional in Jewish culture to give “Mishloach manot” or “shalach manos” on Purim. These are usually baskets of food and sweets meant to ensure that all have enough food for Purim feasting and also to increase love and friendship and connection among Jewish people and their neighbors.”
In this tradition, we want to send a special Purim gift to those in the Jewish community suffering in Ukraine. We will be collecting funds designated for food aid to the Jewish community currently under siege in Kyiv. We have trusted partner ministries currently distributing food to those most in need. This Purim let’s do our part to provide relief and deliverance to Jewish people and their neighbors who are under attack.
The details about our Purim Party:
Where: Upside Down, 10962 Le Conte Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024
When: Thursday, March 17th at 6:30PM
What: Costumes! Hamantashen! Photo Booth!
On Purim it’s traditional to dress up in costumes and masks- don’t freak out, not those kinds of masks. This tradition both remembers Esther’s need to hide her Jewishness while living in Persia and also the “hiddenness” of God’s name throughout the story… more on that later!
Our costume theme this year is Heroes and Villains – so come dressed up as your favorite hero or villain from the Bible, movie, play, TV-show, book or a real life character … Dress to impress, there will be prizes! We will have a photo booth, Hamantaschen, popcorn machine and a live reading of the story of Esther.
We can’t wait to see you there!
