SUMMARY:The Last Generation: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The Last Generation\, an intimate documentary capturing a conversation between Evelyne\, a grandmother and Holocaust survivor\, and Matt\, her grandson. With these two generations side by side\, the documentary encapsulates the sacred act of remembering together\, preserving a story that can only be told in this shared space. \nEvelyne Appel was just a little girl when the world she knew disappeared. In this intimate short documentary\, she sits with her grandson\, Matt\, to revisit memories she has rarely spoken aloud– moments of survival\, loss\, resilience\, and unexpected hope. What emerges is a living testament to memory itself\, a reminder that when survivors speak and their grandchildren listen\, history stays alive. \nThis screening will be followed by a talk back from the film’s director Sophie Rose and producer Maddy Kramer\, as well as Evelyne\, and Matt. We will also invite participants to join in small group conversations\, to share their own family stories in honor of the film’s themes of historical rupture and intergenerational memory.

SUMMARY:Rob Reiner: High Comedy to High Drama
DESCRIPTION:As a 24-year-old actor in the groundbreaking 1970’s TV series All in the Family\, Reiner rose to stardom playing the liberal son-in-law referred to as “Meathead” by his conservative father-in-law\, Archie Bunker.  \nFrom there\, Reiner went on to become one of the most versatile and accomplished American film directors of the last four decades. Richie Unterberger will show and discuss clips from throughout Reiner’s memorable acting and directing career. His unique talent was to create scenes that encompassed and blended riotous comedy and serious drama as evidenced in Spinal Tap\, When Harry Met Sally\, Stand by Me\, The Princess Bride\, and A Few Good Men. We’ll also be treated to rare material from outtakes\, trailers\, and TV shows\, with some featuring his father\, the esteemed comedian Carl Reiner.  \nRock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including volumes on the Beatles\, the Who\, the Velvet Underground\, Bob Marley\, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book\, San Francisco: Portrait of a City\, was published by Taschen in 2022.

SUMMARY:Free Screening of "The Stamp Thief" and Filmmaker Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Mishkon will be hosting a FREE screening the 2025 film\, “The Stamp Thief” followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. \nFrom an Oscar\, Peabody\, and Emmy award-winning team\, “The Stamp Thief” is part detective story\, part heist film\, and part untold history. The documentary investigates a tale dating back to the Holocaust: that a mysterious Nazi stole priceless stamp collections from concentration camp victims and buried the stolen stamps in a small town in Poland. \nEmbarking on a real-life “Argo”-like adventure\, one-time “Seinfeld” producer Gary Gilbert sets out to confirm the story and recover the stamps. His tactic: a fake movie shoot. His goal: to return the stamps to their rightful owners\, hopefully delivering a small measure of justice more than 70 years after the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:“Man with a Movie Camera” Screening with JxJ
DESCRIPTION:A landmark of silent cinema\, Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera is one of the most influential films ever made. Rejecting plot\, actors\, and traditional storytelling\, the film presents a dynamic\, non-linear portrait of everyday life in Soviet cities including Moscow\, Kyiv\, Odesa\, and Kharkiv. \nStructured as a “city symphony\,” the film captures the rhythms of modern urban life\, from factory labor and streetcars to leisure\, marriage\, and birth\, while also revealing the process of filmmaking itself. Cameramen\, editors\, and machines appear onscreen\, emphasizing Vertov’s belief that the camera could perceive reality in ways the human eye could not. \nUsing then-revolutionary techniques such as split screens\, superimposition\, and rapid montage\, the film remains playful\, challenging\, and visually exhilarating. Once controversial\, it is now widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Soviet avant-garde and one of the greatest documentaries ever made. \nThis special screening features The Anvil Orchestra performing the film’s original score live. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: JxJ DC Jewish Film and Music \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round” and a Q&A with the director and Erin Gruwell of Freedom Writers!\n\n\nSpecial Screening in Honor of Black History Month of “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round” with Q&A!\n\nJoin us for a special screening of the thought provoking film\, “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round”! Be sure to stay after the film for an exclusive in-person Q&A with director Ilana Trachtman and Erin Gruwell\, founder of Freedom Writers (and subject of the movie as portrayed by Hilary Swank).Co-prrsented by Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival and Black Jewish Entertainment Alliance. \nAbout the Film: Five Howard students sat down on the gilded horses of “whites-only” carousel the summer of 1960. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students en masse and set up picket lines\, an unprecedented collaboration was born. The pickets attracted Nazis\, Congressman\, and a press avalanche. Picketing together led to partying together and union organizers mentored student activists\, ultimately producing ten 1961 Freedom Riders\, including Stokely Carmichael\, and a Supreme Court case. \nWith never-before seen footage\, and immersive storytelling by Emmy-award winning director Ilana Trachtman\, (“Praying With Lior“) four living protesters rescue this untold story\, revealing the price\, and the power\, of heeding the impulse to activism. AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND includes voiceover by noted actors Jeffrey Wright\, Mandy Patinkin\, Bob Balaban\, Lee Grant\, Peter Gallagher\, Dominique Thorne\, Alysia Reiner\, and Tracie Thoms. \nDirected by Ilana Trachtman \n89 mins/USA/Documentary/2025

SUMMARY:Film screening — Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another powerful installment of our Highlighting Healers and Hope Series and our first-ever documentary film screening at JCP. The film weaves together interviews with hostage family members and the artists behind the KIDNAPPED poster campaign which began soon after 10/7. The film studies the tensions brought about by the campaign and explores the question of how a distant war can fracture the social fabric in a city so far away from the conflict. \nFollowing the film\, director Nim Shapira will be in conversation with Rabbi Deena about his this impactful work\, and there will also be time for Q&A. \nThis event is recommended for adults and teenagers. This event is free for JCP members and costs $18/family for non-members. \nPlease register here \n*Viewer Advisory / Disclaimer \nTORN is an unrated documentary intended for mature audiences.\nThe film contains occasional strong language and brief but sensitive visual material. \nApproximately two minutes of the 75-minute film include real footage depicting civilian suffering\, kidnappings that occurred on October 7\, and scenes related to the war in Gaza. These excerpts are included for contextual and journalistic purposes and may be distressing to some viewers. \nViewer discretion is advised. \n
