SUMMARY:The Big Five: Jewish Swing & Jazz Musicians
DESCRIPTION:April is Jazz Appreciation Month. The JCCSF is delighted to welcome Dave Radlauer\, the jazz Rhythm man\, for his first presentation. Dave will show lively video clips celebrating noteworthy Jews of Swing and Jazz. Strongly contrasting personalities Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw were among the most creative and successful figures of American entertainment. Ziggy Elman made a Yiddish folk dance into the Swing era hit\, “And the Angels Sing.” Buddy Rich was an infant when he started dancing in his parents’ vaudeville act and went on to become a jazz drummer virtuoso. Born in Russia before 1900\, the career of singer Sophie Tucker won success in the Ziegfeld Follies\, vaudeville\, records\, radio and television. Enjoy learning more about how these highly talented and innovative Jews contributed to Jazz. \nDave Radlauer is a broadcaster\, writer\, researcher and storyteller who has been presenting early Jazz and Swing for 40 years. He has garnered six broadcast awards\, published 200 articles\, donated a jazz collection to the Stanford University Libraries and taught courses for the Osher Institutes at UCLA\, UC Berkeley\, San Francisco State and Dominican Universities. \nTo further celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month – please join us for The Gary Zellerbach Duo – Jazz Guitar and Bass performance on Thursday\, April 25\, in our atrium.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Fiddle Summit
DESCRIPTION:Deep fiddle traditions from New York City! \nBlack String Band legends The Ebony Hillbillies\, and rising Klezmer star Zoë Aqua bring the noise and the sweetness for a night of virtuosity\, joy and unstoppable dance party energy. \nThe fiddle is a common denominator to two major musical traditions in New York City: the Jewish Klezmer style and African American folk music. On April 11\, come celebrate the instrument and the Brooklyn communities it represents. \nThe Brooklyn Fiddle Summit is curated by Jeremiah Lockwood and presented by The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life. \nAbout the performers: \nTHE EBONY HILLBILLIES started out as an NYC street corner phenomenon\, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC\, Good Morning America\, NBC\, CBS\, etc.\, international music workshops and festivals\, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum)\, guest school programs\, foot stomping and hand-clapping dance parties and more. While formed in the digital era\, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their four CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday (2004)\, I Thought You Knew (2005)\, Barefoot and Flying (2005) and Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! (2015) – at their shows and via their globally popular website. The Ebony Hillbillies are currently in the studio working on their next project. \nZOË AQUA is a fiddler\, teacher\, and composer\, who has recently returned from a 2-year stint studying Transylvanian folk music on a Fulbright grant in Romania. She’s excited to share some of the raw\, rich and unpredictable tunes she learned from musicians there\, as well as her original compositions based on klezmer and Transylvanian music. She’ll be joined by Ira Temple (accordion) and Zoe Guigeno (bass)\, longtime collaborators of Zoë’s in the rad-trad band Tsibele and respected performer/composers in Brooklyn’s music scene.

SUMMARY:LIVE PERFORMANCE: A NIGHT IN MIAMI
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum with Chicago’s Emmy-Award-winning Orbert Davis\, trumpeter\, composer\, and educator; along with his Jazz Quartet and Lidice Oran\, vocalist; for a celebratory evening inspired by the hustle and bustle of Jewish life in South Beach. More than music\, this program is a tribute to the resilience\, camaraderie\, and indomitable spirit of the “shtetl in the sun.” \nA mere two square miles with over 20\,000 elderly Jews\, including New York transplants and Holocaust Survivors\, South Beach was once an energetic and thriving hub that held Jewish services outdoors with sun-drenched beaches as a backdrop. In the late 1970s\, photographer Andy Sweet captured the essence of this vibrant community with his camera\, dispelling the common stereotype of “God’s Waiting Room.” Many of these colorful snapshots are on display in the Museum’s current special exhibition\, Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980. \nComplimentary signature cocktails by KOVAL will be served. \nReservations required. SUMMARY:The Richness of Rossini: Operas of a Bel Canto Master
DESCRIPTION:Born on February 29th\, Rossini only had a birthday every 4 years\, but he deserves to be celebrated every year. This fascinating figure in the history of music created his very own musical style in the bel canto (“beautiful singing”) period of the early 1800s. His music is unmatched for its effervescent wit\, dazzling virtuosity\, and brilliant flair. San Francisco Opera’s Dramaturg (Scholar in Residence) Emeritus Kip Cranna will use subtitled video to highlight beloved Italian comic works such as The Barber of Seville\, The Italian Girl in Algiers and Cinderella\, and imposing serious operas like Tancredi and Semiramide\, culminating with his final masterpiece\, the French grand opera William Tell. Together we’ll exult in glorious singing and compelling storytelling. \nClifford (Kip) Cranna\, Dramaturg Emeritus of San Francisco Opera\, served on the staff for over forty years and was Director of Music Administration for over thirty years. In 2008 he was awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal\, the company’s highest honor\, and in 2012 he received the Bernard Osher Cultural Award for distinguished efforts to bring excellence to a cultural institution. In 2014 he received the Star of Excellence Award for outstanding service to the programs of the San Francisco Opera Guild. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford University. For thirty years he was Program Editor and Lecturer for the Carmel Bach Festival. He lectures and writes frequently on music and teaches at the Fromm Institute at USF and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at U.C. Berkeley\, Dominican University\, and San Francisco State.

SUMMARY:Tribe 12 Israel Series: Grief Song Circle
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, we are committed to holding more space for our community to process as this war continuesLast month\, we hosted a space to come together as a community to process the current situation in Israel and Gaza. Our community\, as well as our staff\, is not monolithic – we contain a broad range of perspectives on this issue. In listening to these perspectives\, we have centered three core emotions echoing in our community: grief\, fear and hope. For this event we gathered as one community to break bread together and share a bit from our hearts. Then\, we offered a choice between three small group conversations\, each facilitated by a member of our staff\, that centered one of these three emotions. In 2024\, we are committed to holding more space for our community to process as this war continues. We’ve decided to launch a monthly gathering\, rotating between grief\, fear and hope. Every session is drop-in and you can come to as many or as few as you feel called to attend. Our first session will be a grief circle facilitated by Tribe 12’s Rabbinic Intern Molly Paul. This is a space for all who are grieving\, whether that be for loss of life\, loss of beliefs\, loss of community\, or something else. This will be a space for all who want to be held in their grief. Together we will write and reflect\, read poetry\, and allow song and our voices to help us explore and make space for our grief. This session will be held at The Weitzman on January 31st from 7-8pm.For the other two gatherings\, save the dates:February 26th – Hope: Discussion Across DifferenceMarch 27th – Fear Writing Circle ________________________________ Tribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. We welcome people who identify as Jewish\, whose partner is Jewish\, or who are exploring Judaism. Tribe 12 seeks to include all individuals regardless of gender or identity expression\, religious history and practice\, and financial circumstances. We strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including disabled individuals\, to engage fully. If you require any accommodations please see our page on accommodations. Feel free to contact us with any questions at info@tribe12.org
