DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the critically-praised Navona Records release of the first and only complete recording of Ester\, Liberatrice Del Popolo Ebreo (“Esther\, Liberator of the Jewish People”) by Alessandro Stradella (1639–1682)\, members of the original cast reunite for a special performance of this 1673 masterwork in honor of the Purim holiday. \nExploring themes of courage\, self-acceptance\, ambition\, justice\, and power\, Stradella’s Ester tells the story of a timid girl\, secret Jew\, and Persian Queen who summons the bravery to save her people from annihilation. While the oratorio\, a large-scale musical narrative\, derives its plot from the biblical story of The Book of Esther\, modern audiences will surely find resonance and relevance in the journey of a lone woman who triumphs over tyranny. \nOriginally intended to be played in a Baroque palace for an aristocratic Catholic audience\, this bracingly innovative work composed by a volatile genius was largely lost to time before its recent rediscovery and revival. That means we are partnering with House of Yes in Brooklyn to throw the largest and most epic Queer Purim Party for All.  \n  \nCome through the looking glass and experience two huge dance floors\, immersive performances in every corner\, and a Purim wonderland where you definitely won’t be able to tell the difference between Esther and Mordechai! Craving a Bris Station / Circumcision Salad bar? We got you. How about a Drag Shtreimel Petting Zoo? We got that. Crazy costumes are advised\, but there will be makeup and masquerade corners for last minute makeovers. Of course\, for anyone too uptight\, there will be plenty of poppers.  \n  \nPurim is the ancient Jewish holiday where getting drunk\, high\, and silly is the main commandment. This year it falls on a Monday night\, which means you might want to already call in late for work on Tuesday. DESCRIPTION:The Vilna is excited to host the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Beacon Hill. Violinist\, producer\, and 2024 MacArthur Fellow Johnny Gandelsman’s “This Is America” commissioning project was conceived in the summer of 2020\, as COVID-19\, destructive fires\, police brutality\, and political polarization were sweeping the United States. Johnny asked American and US-based composers to reflect on these tumultuous times by writing new compositions for solo violin. The resulting anthology of 28 works represents a snapshot in time\, a representative slice of the creative thought and output in our country. Featuring a broad spectrum of musical genres and composition styles\, This Is America is a collection of deeply personal experiences\, exploring the universal themes of uncertainty\, loss\, isolation\, joy and love. \nJohnny’s work is a product of his life in Moscow\, Israel\, and the United States. \nCheck out one of Johnny’s previous performances below. \n(YouTube video player) \nJohnny Gandelsman \nCalled “a violinist who can do anything” by the Philadelphia Inquirer\, Grammy Award-winning violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman integrates a wide range of creative sensibilities into a style unique among today’s violinists. Richard Brody of the New Yorker has called Gandelsman “revelatory” in concert\, placing him in the company of “radically transformative” performers like Maurizio Pollini\, Peter Serkin\, and Christian Zacharias. He was a 2024 MacArthur Fellow. \nGandelsman was born in Moscow in 1978\, and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1990. He’s lived in NY since 1999.
