SUMMARY:“My Uncle Sam” at 3AM Theatre!
DESCRIPTION:NYC: “My Uncle Sam” by Theater Unspeakable at 3 AM Theatre \nFriday\, Sept 27 @ 7 PM \nSaturday\, Sept 28 @ 3 PM \nCome join us at 3AM Theatre for a night of laughter and entertainment with Theater Unspeakable’s production of “My Uncle Sam.” This in-person event promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness this incredible performance live in the heart of NYC. Get your tickets now! \nAbout the Show \nBorn in Russia in 1891\, Sami Silverstein joined a wave of turn-of-the-century immigrants who came to America seeking a better life. Growing up in Brooklyn\, he took an interest in mechanics and became a test pilot during the early days of aviation. After a near-death experience\, he returned to his love of building bicycles which eventually landed him on a vaudeville stage as Sam Barton of the Barton Bros. act. Marriage\, family and an international career all come careening towards a spectacular yet tragic ending as he dies backstage at Radio City Music Hall in New York on the eve of World War II. \nBased on a true story\, My Uncle Sam uses Theater Unspeakable’s rowdy brand of imaginative physical theater to bring a very personal and meaningful story to life. Combining tongue-in-cheek humor and a dash of derring-do\, this one-person show recreates an era of great ingenuity\, triumph and heartbreak. \nWritten and performed by Marc Frost. Directed by Jeremy Aluma. My Uncle Sam is a one-person show that revives the unique story of a Russian Jewish immigrant who became an international vaudeville star in the early 1900s. \nAbout the Artist \nMARC FROST is an actor\, deviser\, educator and Chicago native who has performed and produced work in Brazil\, Ireland\, Spain\, the United States and the United Kingdom. He created Theater Unspeakable as a platform for original works of devised\, physical theater. Based in Chicago\, the award-winning company has toured nationally\, performing at venues including Lincoln Center Education (NY) and Kennedy Center (DC). He currently teaches at Columbia College Chicago and Roosevelt University. Frost is also a proud graduate of the Commercial Theater Institutes 14-Week Training Program for Commercial Theater Producers in New York City. Theater Unspeakable is an award-winning\, touring theater company. Founded by Marc Frost in 2010\, every year the Chicago-based company tours its shows to hundreds and thousands of young people and families around the country at venues including Lincoln Center Education (NY) and Kennedy Center (DC). The company’s style strives to create live theater at its most imaginative and engaging. Marc also co-founded Physical Theater Festival Chicago (https://www.physicalfestival.com/)\, an international physical theater festival that celebrated its 11th edition in 2024. \nRunning time: 45 minutes + Q+A \nAge Recommendation: Ages 7+

SUMMARY:OBSERVANT
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Weiler Grayson’s New Play OBSERVANT to Headline Spark Theatre Festival NYC \nLimited Engagement runs September 12 – 28 at The Chain Theatre \nHow can we repair the world if we don’t repair ourselves? \nIn OBSERVANT\, three generations of women confront their relationships to their Jewish identities—and to each other. Comedy and tragedy entwine\, like a braided challah\, when a mass shooting in their community tests the bonds of faith and family. OBSERVANT will headline Emerging Artists Theatre’s Spark Theatre Festival NYC. Written by Pamela Weiler Grayson. \nOne of the themes that runs throughout the play is how to come to terms with and try to improve a violent and chaotic world\, when we can’t even seem to get along with our own families or communities\, or reconcile our own internal conflicts. The Jewish custom of  “Tikkun Olam\,” which translates into “repair the world” or “mend the world\,” reflects this deeply-held desire to make the world a better place\, even while we struggle with hatred and extreme tribalism. A very timely theme in our current global and national climate. \nWritten by Pamela Weiler Grayson \nDirected by Shellen Lubin \nProduced by Red Lyric Productions in Association with Adam Weinstock and Emerging Artists Theatre. \nThe cast features Yair Ben-Dor\, Arielle Flax\, Rebecca Hoodwin\, Arielle Beth Klein\,  and Melissa Wolff. \nThe creative and production team includes scenic design by Colleen Shea\, lighting design by David Castaneda\, sound design by Grady Gund\, and costume coordinator Sophia Dorio. \nPerformance schedule: \nThursday\, September 12 at 7pm \nSaturday\, September 14 at 7pm \nMonday\, September\, 16 at 7pm \nWednesday\, September 18 at 2pm \nThursday\, September 19 at 7pm \nSunday\, September 22 at 2pm \nTuesday\, September 24 at 7pm \nThursday\, September 26 at 7pm \nSaturday\, September 28 at 7pm

SUMMARY:Ecstatic Omer: A Dance Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Ecstatic Omer is a dance ritual\, integrating a live DJ set by Stuart B Meyers\, immersive video installation designed by Shira Inbar\, a sound bath by Chaya Glaser\, and an embodied practice for the Jewish tradition of counting the days of the Omer. This ritual through movement takes place on the 38th day of the 49-day cycle known as the Omer in Jewish tradition. \nThe Omer marks the period between the holiday of Passover (which commemorates exodus and physical liberation) and the holiday of Shavuot (which celebrates the revelation of the Torah and Jewish law as a point of spiritual liberation.) Join us as we dance our way over this bridge within the Jewish calendar. \nJewish mysticism associates each day of the Omer with a particular combination of sefirot or divine emanations. Throughout the evening\, we will welcome in the 38th day of the Omer\, which corresponds to the values of Tiferet (magnificence) and Yesod (foundation)\, immersing ourselves in the colors and visual motifs that Kabbalah assigns to these elements. \nKabbalah associates each of these emanations with a particular color. You are invited to come wearing the colors of Tiferet (purple) and Yesod(orange).

SUMMARY:Abracadabra\, Detroit! A Night of Comedy & Magic with Justin Willman
DESCRIPTION:Hey Detroit\, Justin Willman wants to melt your brain while making you laugh! He’s best known as the star and creator of the hit Netflix series Magic For Humans. Or you may recognize him from one of his many television appearances (The Tonight Show\, The Today Show\, Ellen\, Conan…). Or maybe you know his work as a host (Baking Impossible; Cupcake Wars; Win\, Lose or Draw…). Or maybe he’s the child magician you hired in suburban St. Louis in the ‘90s. \nIf you don’t know Justin\, he’s a magician and comedian who’s mastered the art of turning cynics into believers (or at least getting them to laugh). His live show is simultaneously mind-blowing and hilarious\, and will likely keep you up at night wondering how the heck any of it was possible. We can’t wait for Justin to bring his hysterical brand of magic to Detroit for a special show just for our Jewish community at The Berman Center for The Performing Arts! \n6 PM: Pre-Glow with heavy apps and cocktails. Dietary laws observed.7:30 PM: Show time! If you’re skipping the Pre-Glow\, arrive no later than 7:15 to grab a seat. \nThis event is intended for Gen X adults. \n$50 per person. SUMMARY:Heschel’s Passover Eve at Chicago Loop Synagogue
DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Prof. Abraham Joshua Heschel’s inspiring life story and character is made into a fascinating show. The play\, hosted here at the Chicago Loop Synagogue is an original production commissioned by the World Zionist Organization to inaugurated events marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Abraham Joshua Heschel – one of the most important Jewish thinkers of modern times.\nThe solo performance of “Heschel’s Passover Eve” meets Rabbi Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel a few days before the Seder to which he invited his friend and traveling companion\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr\, in April 1968.\nThe preparations for Seder night infuse the Jewish “Festival of Freedom” with universal meaning and link the call\, “Let My People Go\,” to the struggle for human rights\, social activism\, the need for Tikkun Olam\, the relevance of Jewish tradition\, Zionism\, and Jewish peoplehood for each one of us.\nThe cost to attend is $18.\nTo register – go to https://www.chiloopsyn.org/form/heschel./

SUMMARY:Love Isn't Blind
DESCRIPTION:Gimmel Gimmel Gimmel A Man After Midnight\n\n\nDoors at 7 for drinks & mingling\, show at 8\, after-party to follow. Stay all night! \nFor the first time ever\, the hit live/comedy dating show Love Isn’t Blind (LA Magazine\, LAist\, California Live\, & more) is partnering with Chochmat HaLev in Berkeley to bring you a Jewish edition of the show!* It’s time to jews your man wisely\, find yourselves a keep-aw\, and be very concerned about the amount of puns coming your way. \nRead more about the show & Chochmat HaLev below! \nLove Isn’t Blind \nTired of swiping? In this dating experiment\, men compete on stage for one lucky bachelorette\, with the little caveat that the men can’t speak. Through a series of games – which includes calling the boys’ moms and unlocking their phones – we narrow it down to two men. Finally\, we hear their voices\, and the lucky winning man is sent with our bachelorette to the bar for an immediate date. Audience members wear wristbands according to their relationship status\, and a wingpeople (who wear actual wings) help those of you who are too shy to make a move. \nCreated and hosted by Allison Goldberg. Want to be in the show? APPLY HERE. \nChochmat HaLev \nChochmat HaLev is a Jewish Renewal Congregation. Jewish Renewal is a trans-denominational approach to revitalizing Judaism. As an attitude\, not a denomination\, it is a doorway through which we can access all branches of Judaism to explore how they might inform our contemporary vision of a socially progressive\, egalitarian\, and celebratory connection with the Divine and with each other. Jewish mystical tradition teaches that we live simultaneously in four worlds: action\, emotion\, thought\, and spirit. Jewish Renewal provides opportunities for all of us to fully embody this teaching and invites us to live lives that matter. \n*Ed: My last name is Goldberg; we knew this was coming.

SUMMARY:theatre dybbuk Presents: The Villainy You Teach
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss The Villainy You Teach\, an exciting performance art installation piece by theatre dybbuk\, coming to DC for the first time as part of their residency in our region. \nInvestigating Shakespeare’s controversial The Merchant of Venice\, The Villainy You Teach invites Museum attendees to witness an actor perform Shylock’s famous “Hath not a Jew eyes” speech repeatedly over the course of most of the length of the play\, reciting it dozens\, if not hundreds\, of times. This action is accompanied by a simultaneous performed reading of Merchant in its entirety – its words acting as the container within which Shylock’s speech exists. \nVisitors can stay in the space for the duration of the (approximately) 2.5 hour performance or come and go\, engaging with the event in the manner in which they choose. This program is supported in part by a grant from The Covenant Foundation. \nLearn more about this performance piece > \nLearn more about theatre dybbuk’s residency > \nThis ticket includes access to the Museum’s ongoing exhibitions. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum of Maryland which is presenting the production’s companion performance piece\, The Merchant of Venice (Annotated)\, or In Sooth I know Not Why I am So Sad on Thursday\, January 25.
