Please note in your ticket purchase if you have any dietary restrictions. \nTickets: $90 per person\nSponsorship opportunities available \nLimited Tickets Available – Reserve yours today! \nAbout Our Speaker \nDori Katz was born in Antwerp\, Belgium\, to Polish and Czech parents a year before the Germans invaded and occupied Belgium in 1940. With the exception of Dori and her mother who survived separately in hiding\, her father and entire family were deported to Auschwitz where they perished. Reunited after the war\, Dori and her mother came to America in 1952. She earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa\, and is currently Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages and Literature from Trinity College in Hartford\, Connecticut\, where she taught French and Modern European Literature for several decades. She has published many poems and translations from the French in anthologies\, journals and reviews\, and has published a bi-lingual book of poetry\, Hiding in Other People’s Houses\, with her poems translated into Spanish. Her memoir Looking for Strangers: The True Story of my Hidden Wartime Childhood was published by the University of Chicago Press in October 2013. It was a finalist for an award from The National Jewish Book Council for 2013.

All in our community of descendants of Holocaust survivors and supporters are invited to eat\, connect\, and learn together. \nWe are honored to welcome this year’s speaker\, Doris Schechter\, who will share her incredible journey of survival and resilience. Born in Vienna to Jewish parents\, Doris and her family fled to Italy at the start of World War II. In 1944\, at the age of six\, she boarded The Henry Gibbins\, a ship bound for New York\, where she and her family became some of the 982 refugees hosted at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego\, NY—the only shelter in the United States for Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. With the help of Ruth Gruber and Eleanor Roosevelt\, Doris and her family were able to stay in the U.S. after the war\, eventually settling in New York City.
