SUMMARY:Film screening — Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another powerful installment of our Highlighting Healers and Hope Series and our first-ever documentary film screening at JCP. The film weaves together interviews with hostage family members and the artists behind the KIDNAPPED poster campaign which began soon after 10/7. The film studies the tensions brought about by the campaign and explores the question of how a distant war can fracture the social fabric in a city so far away from the conflict. \nFollowing the film\, director Nim Shapira will be in conversation with Rabbi Deena about his this impactful work\, and there will also be time for Q&A. \nThis event is recommended for adults and teenagers. This event is free for JCP members and costs $18/family for non-members. \nPlease register here \n*Viewer Advisory / Disclaimer \nTORN is an unrated documentary intended for mature audiences.\nThe film contains occasional strong language and brief but sensitive visual material. \nApproximately two minutes of the 75-minute film include real footage depicting civilian suffering\, kidnappings that occurred on October 7\, and scenes related to the war in Gaza. These excerpts are included for contextual and journalistic purposes and may be distressing to some viewers. \nViewer discretion is advised. \n

SUMMARY:Torn Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an evening of conversation\, community and learning. We are so excited to present to you Torn: The Israel–Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets. We have to opportunity to feature film participants Alana Zeitchick (Israeli-American Advocate and Hostage Family Member)\, Julia Simon (childhood friend of Omer Neutra) and Rabbi Yehuda Sarna (Executive Director of the Bronfman Center and Interviewee) in this event and hear from them after the screening. This event created in partnership with Moishe House of Williamsburg\, Hells Kitchen\, Harlem\, Upper East Side\, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn NAIM. This is an event specifically open to young adults ages 20-40 years old. \nAfter Hamas’s October 7 attacks and Israel’s war in Gaza\, New York erupts into a poster war over the kidnapped. TORN captures the symbolic battle for public space — where strangers rip\, defend\, and rage in the streets\, and empathy is the first thing to go. As the ceasefire in Israel-Gaza is now in effect and our 20 living hostages have returned from captivity this evening will focus on where we go from here. \nHow do we ask difficult questions and how do we have difficult conversations? These posters explore questions about freedom of speech in America and how do we continue to ask those questions as we begin again. \nPlease join us before the screening at 6pm for some drinks\, light snacks and to mix and mingle. The film will start promptly at 7pm with a talkback following.

SUMMARY:Explore Israel's Resilience: Wine-Tasting Event with Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM)
DESCRIPTION:RSVP: https://access.yjp.org/e/jhgp_2m \nIsrael’s Wine Diplomacy with Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) \nWe extend an invitation to an evening that explores the unexpected alliance between wine\, warfare\, and the battle against hate. This event will feature selections from extraordinary wineries\, many of which have felt the impact of Israel’s security challenges firsthand. We aim to narrate the story of a rejuvenated world\, rooted deeply in its heritage and its people\, through the lens of wine. \nThe Israeli wine industry weaves a captivating narrative of ancient heritage intertwined with modern innovation\, exemplifying Israel’s connection to history and its forward-thinking spirit through viticulture. Historically\, Israel was among the world’s leading wine producers 3\,500 years ago\, renowned for its exceptional grape cultivation. However\, with the arrival of Muslim invasions\, vineyards gave way to olive groves until the establishment of Israel\, when viticulture was revitalized. Leveraging Start-Up Nation technologies\, Israel’s wine industry burgeoned from 90 wineries in the 1990s to over 400 today. \nThese wineries\, spanning from north to south\, often find themselves on the frontlines of national defense. Many owners have been summoned for reserve duty\, and since October\, the industry has faced significant losses yet has shown remarkable resilience. Wine holds a sacred place in Jewish history\, integral to religious rituals and now serving as a beacon of hope. \nLeading this unique initiative are CAM CEO Sacha Roytman and CAM Director of Community Engagement Shira Granot\, with the Israel Wine Collection (IWC) at the forefront. The IWC project illuminates the rich tapestry of Israel’s history and its innovative essence through its wine making\, showcasing selections from over 30 wineries.

SUMMARY:Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema: “Vishniac”
DESCRIPTION:He was difficult and flamboyant\, a shameless self-promoter\, bender of the truth and master of reinvention. He was also one of the groundbreaking photographers of the 20th century–a brilliant artist whose body of work spans decades\, continents\, and the catastrophic fallout from two world wars. Though his pioneering microscopy transformed the nature of science photography in the 1970s\, Roman Vishniac is best known for his iconic images of Jewish life in Eastern Europe from 1935 through 1938. Few predicted that less than a decade later\, these communities would be wiped out\, and Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world. Now for the first time\, his story comes to life as a feature documentary. Produced by Roberta Grossman (Above and Beyond\, Who Will Write Our History).
