SUMMARY:Torn Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an evening of conversation\, community and learning. We are so excited to present to you Torn: The Israel–Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets. We have to opportunity to feature film participants Alana Zeitchick (Israeli-American Advocate and Hostage Family Member)\, Julia Simon (childhood friend of Omer Neutra) and Rabbi Yehuda Sarna (Executive Director of the Bronfman Center and Interviewee) in this event and hear from them after the screening. This event created in partnership with Moishe House of Williamsburg\, Hells Kitchen\, Harlem\, Upper East Side\, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn NAIM. This is an event specifically open to young adults ages 20-40 years old. \nAfter Hamas’s October 7 attacks and Israel’s war in Gaza\, New York erupts into a poster war over the kidnapped. TORN captures the symbolic battle for public space — where strangers rip\, defend\, and rage in the streets\, and empathy is the first thing to go. As the ceasefire in Israel-Gaza is now in effect and our 20 living hostages have returned from captivity this evening will focus on where we go from here. \nHow do we ask difficult questions and how do we have difficult conversations? These posters explore questions about freedom of speech in America and how do we continue to ask those questions as we begin again. \nPlease join us before the screening at 6pm for some drinks\, light snacks and to mix and mingle. The film will start promptly at 7pm with a talkback following.

SUMMARY:Eyal Vilner Big Band Concert: The New Roaring Twenties!
DESCRIPTION:The Eyal Vilner Big Band is back on Eldridge Street for a concert bringing a unique and fresh voice to classic traditions of jazz\, swing\, and the blues. \nJazz music is communal music\, coming from Black American communities around the country\, but especially in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. It helped people rise\, process good times and bad\, and lift spirits. It is because of the music’s appeal to the full spectrum of humanity—hardship\, joy\, love\, anger\, serenity—that jazz\, including lindy hop and swing\, became so widely loved\, and came to define the 1920s and beyond\, both at home and abroad. \nThe history of jazz is also inextricably linked with the Eastern European Jewish immigration story. Benny Goodman\, the son of Eastern European Jewish immigrants and known as “The King of Swing\,” led one of the first integrated jazz groups during an era of racial segregation. Before moving to New York City\, Goodman got his start at Chicago’s Kehelah Jacob Synagogue\, where he received his first clarinet. The iconic jazz musician Louis Armstrong banded together with the Jewish community of New Orleans over shared struggle\, and got his start as a young boy working with the Karnofsky family\, recently arrived Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. He wore a Star of David around his neck for much of his life as an affectionate tribute to them. Of course\, you cannot forget Irving Berlin\, himself a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe\, whose music forms some of the most iconic jazz standards\, and what would become the Great American Songbook. \nJoin the Eyal Vilner Big Band as they revive this iconic music for a new Roaring Twenties in 2025. The program will include reimagined classics in addition to a selection of original compositions.

SUMMARY:Rosh Chodesh Circle
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Rosh Chodesh was given to women as their own special holiday? \nRosh Chodesh signifies the renewal of the moon and the start of a new month. According to tradition\, it was a reward to women for their devotion and wisdom during the Exodus and their refusal to participate in the creation of the Golden Calf. Instead\, they eagerly contributed their gold and jewelry to help build the Mishkan (Tabernacle)! \nJoin us to celebrate the new month with meaningful discussions that explore Jewish wisdom\, traditions\, rituals\, and blessings to honor Rosh Chodesh. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect and foster a supportive community— along with snacks and wine! \nWhat to Expect: \nThoughtful discussions on Jewish wisdom and traditions\nRituals and blessings to honor the new month\nOpportunities to connect and build a supportive community\nSnacks and wine\nWe can’t wait to celebrate with you on October 22nd\, November 26th\, and December 17th!

SUMMARY:Swifties in the Sukkah @ Base UWS
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the release of Taylor Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl (October 3) with us under the sukkah! \nWe’ll be listening to the album together\, making friendship bracelets\, and learning a bit of Torah through gematria whileexploring the connection between numbers in Jewish tradition and the hidden clues in Taylor’s music.  \n(Gematria is a traditional Jewish system of assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters\, words\, and phrases.) Taylor is famous for planting hidden messages\, numbers\, and “easter eggs” in her work—both in the music itself and in everything around it. Together\, it’s a (Swiftie Jewish Educator’s) match made in heaven. \nOrange-theme (IYKYK) drinks and snacks provided. \nAccessibility: If it’s nice out\, we’ll gather on the fourth floor outdoor deck. There are eight steps leading up to Base UWS. There is an elevator that travels in between the first\, second\, and third floors. The elevator does not go up to the fourth floor outdoor deck\, which has 22 stairs. \nAddress given upon registration. Please contact Rabbi Danny (danny.stein@memglobal.org) with any questions. \n— \nWe kindly ask that you do not come to events if you are feeling ill. We currently do not require Covid testing or face masks; we have face masks available for those who want one.
