SUMMARY:Empower & Protect: Community Self-Defense Training
DESCRIPTION:Empower & Protect: Community Self-Defense Training with Alec Goenner\nPresented by Collective Threat Response Initiative (CTRI)Location: Rockville\, MD – Address provided after registrationSunday\, January 25 | 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM \nAbout This Event\nIn a world where Jewish communities face rising threats\, preparedness is empowerment. \nJoin us for a dynamic\, hands-on self-defense and situational awareness training led by Alec Goenner\, owner/instructor at IKMA Krav Maga — Israel’s official system of self-defense and close-quarters combat. \nThis three-hour workshop focuses on practical\, effective skills anyone can learn\, regardless of age or fitness level. Participants will develop tools to: \n\n\nRecognize and avoid potential threats \n\n\nReact decisively under pressure \n\n\nProtect themselves and others with confidence \n\n\nBuild the mindset of readiness and resilience \n\n\nThe training will address practical self-defense skills applicable to both everyday personal safety situations and community settings. Participants will learn techniques relevant to street-level encounters\, as well as response principles for identifying\, managing\, and disrupting a hostile individual attempting to gain access to a Jewish institution — with an emphasis on awareness\, positioning\, and decisive action rather than physical strength. \nNo prior experience required. Open to men and women ages 16+.Modest workout attire recommended. \nAbout the Instructor\nAlec Goenner is the owner and lead instructor at IKMA Krav Maga and has completed over 3\,000 hours of advanced instructor training. He holds Black Belt ranking\, earned directly under Grandmaster Haim Gidon in Israel — one of only a few Americans to do so. Alec is a certified Krav Maga Civilian\, Military\, and Police Instructor\, and has trained alongside elite instructors including IDF Special Forces experts Nir Maman and Garret Machine. \nAn active-duty U.S. Coast Guard servicemember\, Alec brings years of martial arts\, fitness\, and real-world defensive experience to every class. \nLearn more at IKMA Krav Maga. \nWhy This Matters\nThis event is more than just a class — it’s part of CTRI’s mission to empower the Jewish community through training\, readiness\, and volunteer security leadership. \nProceeds support CTRI’s training and operational readiness work\, helping equip and license community volunteers who protect Jewish institutions across our region. \nYour participation strengthens individual readiness and communal resilience.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: HIAS CEO\, Beth Oppenheim
DESCRIPTION:My late grandfather owed his life to HIAS\, coming to the United States from Germany to escape the horrors of the Holocaust. At this critical moment\, HIAS’ mission is more vital than ever. Looking ahead\, I am committed to working alongside our dedicated staff\, partners\, and supporters to ensure HIAS remains at the forefront of advocating for the most vulnerable and continuing to protect welcome. \nBefore joining HIAS\, she served in executive roles in several international development and refugee resettlement agencies\, including longtime partner of HIAS\, Church World Service. She is an expert on displacement and poverty alleviation in Africa\, having held positions in Kenya\, Uganda\, South Africa\, and Mozambique\, amongst other locations. Through her senior leadership positions at two of the ten resettlement agencies in the U.S.\, she has helped to shape how the sector preserves welcome for newcomers in a changing landscape. Oppenheim holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Cape Town\, a Master of Science in Global Affairs from New York University\, and earned her Bachelor of Arts from NYU\, where she double majored in Metropolitan Studies and Hebrew and Judaic Studies. A recognized thought leader in her field\, Oppenheim has written and published extensively on development and the NGO sector.

SUMMARY:Big Jewish Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Big Jewish Gathering – a two-day spiritual convening in Brooklyn weaving immersive ritual\, embodied learning\, and creative renewal. On January 24–25\, we’ll gather with spiritual leaders\, teachers\, and artists from across Jewish time and tradition — converging through mystical and ancestral pathways of awakening. \nThe Big Jewish Gathering is a bold new experiment in Jewish spiritual and cultural life: a two-day spiritual laboratory where emerging and established Jewish leaders will co-create a Judaism that meets this moment — one that is rooted\, relevant\, and alive. \nThis is not a retreat. It’s not a synagogue service. It is a practice ground for connection\, creativity\, and renewal\, open to anyone interested in vibrant\, meaningful engagement with a Judaism that is embodied\, relational\, and grounded in tradition.
