SUMMARY:The Last Generation: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The Last Generation\, an intimate documentary capturing a conversation between Evelyne\, a grandmother and Holocaust survivor\, and Matt\, her grandson. With these two generations side by side\, the documentary encapsulates the sacred act of remembering together\, preserving a story that can only be told in this shared space. \nEvelyne Appel was just a little girl when the world she knew disappeared. In this intimate short documentary\, she sits with her grandson\, Matt\, to revisit memories she has rarely spoken aloud– moments of survival\, loss\, resilience\, and unexpected hope. What emerges is a living testament to memory itself\, a reminder that when survivors speak and their grandchildren listen\, history stays alive. \nThis screening will be followed by a talk back from the film’s director Sophie Rose and producer Maddy Kramer\, as well as Evelyne\, and Matt. We will also invite participants to join in small group conversations\, to share their own family stories in honor of the film’s themes of historical rupture and intergenerational memory.

SUMMARY:Dave Portnoy in Conversation:Cancel Me If You Can
DESCRIPTION:Dave Portnoy didn’t set out to be a political lightning rod — but love him or hate him\, he’s here to stay. Join the Barstool Sports founder for the unfiltered story of how he created a media empire. \nDave Portnoy built Barstool Sports by trusting his instincts — and refusing to soften his voice. Now\, in his new memoir Cancel Me If You Can\, he tells the story behind the persona: the risks\, missteps\, reinventions\, and stubborn persistence that carried him from handing out a scrappy Boston sports paper to leading a sprawling digital brand. \nWhat does it mean to build an audience by being unapologetically yourself? How do you navigate success when it arrives alongside scrutiny — and often\, backlash? Hear Portnoy in a candid conversation about ambition\, controversy\, and the evolving rules of media and public life. \nPhoto credit: Paul Morigi/Getty Images for The Stronach Group.

SUMMARY:Rob Reiner: High Comedy to High Drama
DESCRIPTION:As a 24-year-old actor in the groundbreaking 1970’s TV series All in the Family\, Reiner rose to stardom playing the liberal son-in-law referred to as “Meathead” by his conservative father-in-law\, Archie Bunker.  \nFrom there\, Reiner went on to become one of the most versatile and accomplished American film directors of the last four decades. Richie Unterberger will show and discuss clips from throughout Reiner’s memorable acting and directing career. His unique talent was to create scenes that encompassed and blended riotous comedy and serious drama as evidenced in Spinal Tap\, When Harry Met Sally\, Stand by Me\, The Princess Bride\, and A Few Good Men. We’ll also be treated to rare material from outtakes\, trailers\, and TV shows\, with some featuring his father\, the esteemed comedian Carl Reiner.  \nRock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including volumes on the Beatles\, the Who\, the Velvet Underground\, Bob Marley\, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book\, San Francisco: Portrait of a City\, was published by Taschen in 2022.

SUMMARY:Spies & Intelligence: The World of International Espionage
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that a double agent is a spy who pretends to work for a country/organization while secretly working for a different\, often hostile\, one? Deception is central in espionage and counter-espionage operations. Double agents are valuable assets because they can be used to transmit disinformation to the enemy\, identify other enemy agents\, and collect intelligence on the inner workings of the opposing side.  \nAttorney Oak Dowling pulls back the curtain with information and examples of the difference between turned agents\, infiltrators\, and mercenaries. One famous case is the British “Double-Cross System” during World War II\, which was a successful double agent operation\, where German spies were “turned” and used to feed false information to their Nazi controllers.  \nOak Dowling\, JD\, is a retired attorney with 43 years of practice. He’s a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison Law School and a native of Chicago. He was a part-time Instructor of Law at College of Marin and has been an Instructor in the OLLI program at Dominican University for 13 years.  In his law classes\, he uses courtroom drama to demonstrate legal principles.   \nOak has lived in Marin County for 50 years and was happily married for 61 years.  He has been a member of the Marin County Financial Abuse Specialist Team (“FAST”) and was selected as Outstanding Marin County Volunteer of the Year for 2012-2013. As an avocation\, he has performed in theatre in Marin and San Francisco for 15 years.

SUMMARY:Amram Scholar Series: Lee Yaron\, “10/7: 100 Human Stories”
DESCRIPTION:At just 30\, Lee Yaron became the youngest-ever winner of the National Jewish Book Award’s Book of the Year for “10/7: 100 Human Stories\,” joining the ranks of literary giants like Philip Roth\, Elie Wiesel\, and David Grossman. Washington Hebrew now welcomes her to discuss the book\, which offers readers a rare\, ground-level understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the hearts and homes of its people. She is an elected member-representative of the Executive Committee of the Union of Israeli. Yaron’s expertise has been showcased on major American television networks\, including Good Morning America\, Morning Joe\, CNN\, and MSNBC\, as well as prominent European channels like France 24 and German ARD. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic\, The Forward\, Tablet\, New York Magazine\, and Haaretz. She has appeared as a television panelist and solo guest on MSNBC Morning Joe\, and CNN. \nCurrently on a book tour across the United States\, Yaron has done more than 90 book events at prestigious venues including Yale University\, New York’s 92Y\, DC Sixth & I\, and major Jewish community conferences such as the GA of the Jewish Federations and the Hillel Israel Summit. \n\nAbout the Amram Scholar Series\nThis dynamic program of public lectures brings world-renowned authors\, scholars\, political leaders\, policy experts\, and theologians to WHC to share their perspectives on timely issues or their research into Jewish culture and history. SUMMARY:Sarah Hoover in Conversation with Chelsea Clinton:The Motherload
DESCRIPTION:With her bestselling memoir The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood\, Hoover has become an unlikely cultural lightning rod — part downtown intellectual\, part art-world insider\, part reluctant spokesperson for the maternal id. \nHer subject isn’t the curated Instagram version of parenting. It’s the real one: identity collapse\, marriage stress tests\, brain fog\, rage\, dark humor\, and the uncomfortable questions women are still not supposed to ask out loud. \nFew recent books about motherhood have landed with this kind of cultural force. Already a national bestseller with a television adaptation in development\, The Motherload has quickly become a touchstone in the evolving conversation about motherhood today — “a ferocious act of honesty about the reality of being a mother in a world that simultaneously idealizes and diminishes the maternal experience” (The Observer). At once memoir and cultural critique\, Hoover’s work is lucid and unexpectedly funny\, offering a new vocabulary for talking about maternal ambivalence\, mental health\, and the impossible standards placed on modern women. \nReflecting on the dissonance between motherhood as it is lived and as it is represented\, hear Hoover as she dismantles the myth of the “perfect mother” — and makes the case for something far more compelling: honesty. \nEach in-person ticket is bundled with a paperback copy of The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood.

SUMMARY:Wednesdays @ Wonderland: Jen Glantz\, “Finally the Bride”
DESCRIPTION:Introducing a brand-new author series from WHC at Wonderland Books (7920 Norfolk Ave\, Bethesda)\, an independent\, women-owned bookstore. Celebrating Jewish voices with heartfelt storytelling and wit\, each author will be in conversation with a member of our clergy. We can’t wait to see you there! \nRSVP \nAbout the Book\nFrom the woman who made a career out of being a professional bridesmaid comes a refreshingly honest\, touching\, and humorous memoir about finding love and finally the bride becoming herself.  \nAfter helping hundreds of strangers navigate their walk down the aisle\, Jen Glantz thought she had seen it all — until it was her turn. When a psychic once told her she’d never find love\, Glantz set out to prove her wrong\, embarking on fourteen first dates in one month. But finding love was just the beginning. \nIn this candid and witty account\, Glantz takes readers through her unconventional journey from professional bridesmaid to pandemic bride\, learning that sometimes the perfect wedding isn’t what you imagined at all. With stories that will make you laugh\, cry\, and question everything you thought you knew about modern love and marriage\, “Finally the Bride” proves that there’s no right way to tie the knot – as long as you’re true to yourself. \nA must-read for anyone who’s ever felt pressure to have the perfect wedding\, struggled with relationship expectations\, or simply wondered what really happens behind the scenes of all those picture-perfect celebrations. \nAbout the Author\n\n\nJen Glantz is the founder of Bridesmaid for Hire\, the world’s first company where strangers can hire a bridesmaid for their wedding. She’s the author of “Always a Bridesmaid (for Hire)” and “All My Friends Are Engaged.” Jen lives in Brooklyn with Adam (the husband)\, Gemma (the baby)\, and Goofy (the dog).
