SUMMARY:Unlearning Jewish Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Feeling anxious lately about the state of the world and being Jewish? It’s not all in your head\, and you’re not alone. Jewish anxiety is not our fault. It’s an understandable response to fear\, uncertainty\, and anti-Jewish contempt. \nRabbi Dr. Caryn Aviv\, author of Unlearning Jewish Anxiety: How to Live with More Joy and Suffer Less\, will lead this course with Rabbi Jenna using neuroscience and Jewish wisdom to offer practical tools for how to spot when we’re in a Jewish anxiety loop and how to respond with better habits. Unlearning Jewish Anxiety explores what anxiety feels like and untangles some common Jewish anxiety habits about our safety\, worth\, and belonging in this difficult world. \nThis discussion will help you understand what we face\, how we got here\, and how we can live more fully in the present moment with awareness\, curiosity\, and self-compassion\, and hopefully\, less suffering. \nNo one will be turned away from any of our classes due to lack of funds. For more information\, please contact our Jewish Life Associate\, Robyn Fishman\, rfishman@sixthandi.org \n \n \nPlease note: tickets are non-refundable.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Jared Freid —Walking Red Flag: Dating Advice from Your Favorite Guy Friend
DESCRIPTION:Despite “looking like a toxic frat bro” (as Ronny Chieng puts it)\, comedian and beloved host of The J-Train and U Up? podcasts Jared Freid is actually one of the sharpest translators of dating chaos out there — what Logan Ury calls “one of the most insightful voices in modern dating.” And honestly? We need him. You’re not crazy— dating right now feels like a group project where nobody read the instructions. \nYou know the type: he plans a candlelit weekend\, then says he’s “just seeing what’s out there.” He watches your Instagram Story in three seconds flat … then replies to your text like he’s mailing it by carrier pigeon. Following up his Netflix smash 37 & Single and his Table for One tour\, Freid has put all his advice together in a good old-fashioned dating advice book — Walking Red Flag: Dating Advice from Your Favorite Guy Friend — and is stopping by our stage for the book launch. This is your night to laugh at the madness\, decode the mixed signals\, and maybe even feel optimistic again. Because if dating is a joke … at least this time\, you’re in on it.

SUMMARY:Dr. Jill Biden (IRL + Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a candid conversation with former First Lady Jill Biden about her life in the White House during a singular moment in U.S. history—and her new memoir\, View from the East Wing. \nIn the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic\, in the shadow of the January 6 insurrection\, Joe and Jill Biden arrived at the White House for one of the most complicated periods in recent American memory. A tireless advocate for women’s health initiatives\, military families\, cancer prevention\, and education\, Dr. Biden also made history as the only First Lady to hold a career outside the East Wing as a community college professor. Now\, in her new memoir\, she reveals her experience of these deeply consequential four years for the first time — before\, during\, and after the unexpected ending to her husband’s bid for re-election\, setting the record straight and sharing her story in her own words. \nwith Politics and Prose Bookstore \nEvents at Sixth & I \n\nSeating is primarily general admission; first-come\, first-served. SUMMARY:Senator Chris Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Sen. Murphy views the Trump administration’s assaults on democracy as a symptom of a deeper crisis: the abandonment of the common good as our country’s organizing principle. In Crisis of the Common Good: The Fight for Meaning and Connection in a Broken America\, he draws on history and political philosophy to expose how six different cults have paved the way to our current troubles: a cult of profit that punishes workers\, a cult of globalism that weakens communities\, a cult of technology that turns us against one another\, a cult of consumption that undermines citizenship\, a cult of credentialism that devalues those without degrees\, and a cult of corruption that threatens democracy. \nwith Politics and Prose Bookstore \nEvents at Sixth & I \n\nSeating is primarily general admission; first-come\, first-served. DESCRIPTION:Mindy Kaling\, showrunner Charlie Grandy\, and the cast of the new Hulu series Not Suitable for Work gather for an exclusive advance episode screening of the latest chapter in her ever-expanding “Mindy-verse\,” followed by a conversation. \nOn the heels of her beloved explorations of adolescence and college life in Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls\, Kaling returns with a sharp\, affectionate look at the chaos and ambition of life in your ’20s. Following five work-obsessed young professionals navigating friendship\, romance\, and the pressures of getting ahead in New York City — an ensemble including Ella Hunt\, Avantika Vandanapu\, Jack Martin\, Will Angus\, and Nicholas Duvernay — Not Suitable for Work is like Friends for the grindset: a funny\, heartfelt look at the realities of young adulthood and modern work culture. \nAfter the screening\, Kaling\, Grandy\, and the cast take the stage to discuss the making of the series — creating their dynamic ensemble chemistry\, how they captured the anxieties and exhilarations of early adulthood\, stories from behind the scenes\, and more.

SUMMARY:Strength that Lasted Generations: The Story of Sam Zelinger
DESCRIPTION:Join us May 20th at the Center for Jewish History or virtually on Zoom for 3GNY’s first hybrid WEDU Wednesday as Elliot Zelinger shares the story of his grandfather\, Sam Zelinger. \nFor those in the NY area\, join us for a reception with Elliot at 7:30 prior to the program beginning at 8:00. For those unable to join in-person\, we look forward to seeing you on Zoom at 8:00pm! \nAbout Sam Zelinger: \nSam Zelinger was born in 1924 in Campulung La Tisa\, Romania\, the oldest of nine children\, and enjoyed a joyful childhood before the devastation of the Holocaust. While imprisoned in Auschwitz\, a chance encounter with his father gave him the strength and courage to continue surviving. After the war\, he immigrated to New York City to build a new life\, overcoming immense hardship with resilience and determination. He leaves behind a powerful legacy of faith\, family\, and generations who carry forward his story and strength. \nElliot recalls his grandfather Sam’s love of sour pickles and kosher salami\, as well as how important it was to him that his grandchildren keep the Jewish faith and traditions. SUMMARY:Esther Perel: Mating in Captivity\, 20 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:Renowned psychotherapist Esther Perel is widely considered one of the world’s most insightful and original voices on erotic intelligence. With her first book\, Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence\, Perel changed how we talk about love\, intimacy\, and desire\, asking: \n\nWhy does good sex fade even in couples who continue to love each other?\nWhy doesn’t good intimacy guarantee good sex?\nCan we want what we already have?\nWhy does sex make babies and babies spell erotic disaster in couples?\nWhy is the forbidden so erotic?\nAnd ultimately\, how do we manage the tension between domesticity and desire?\n\nOn the 20th anniversary of Mating in Captivity\, Perel brings these questions to The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center stage\, reflecting on two decades of cultural change that have further challenged intimacy and desire. We once asked whether desire could survive children\, marriage and the growing demands of modern coupledom. Today\, the question is whether it can survive our frictionless technologies and our increasingly disembodied lives. \nMore than a retrospective\, this conversation revisits a book that has become a cultural touchstone\, offering a multicultural framework for how couples might cultivate aliveness\, curiosity and erotic vitality amid growing disconnection. \nAbout Esther Perel \nPsychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Esther Perel is recognized as one of today’s most insightful and original voices on modern relationships. Fluent in nine languages\, she helms a therapy practice in New York City\, serves as an organizational consultant for Fortune 500 companies and is an advisor to both Hinge and Culture Amp on the intricacies of human connection. Her celebrated TED Talks have garnered 50 million views\, and her bestselling books\, Mating in Captivity and The State of Affairs\, are global phenomena translated into more than 30 languages. Perel is also the host of the hit podcast Where Should We Begin?\, which has captivated millions of listeners around the world for nearly a decade. SUMMARY:The Last Generation: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The Last Generation\, an intimate documentary capturing a conversation between Evelyne\, a grandmother and Holocaust survivor\, and Matt\, her grandson. With these two generations side by side\, the documentary encapsulates the sacred act of remembering together\, preserving a story that can only be told in this shared space. \nEvelyne Appel was just a little girl when the world she knew disappeared. In this intimate short documentary\, she sits with her grandson\, Matt\, to revisit memories she has rarely spoken aloud– moments of survival\, loss\, resilience\, and unexpected hope. What emerges is a living testament to memory itself\, a reminder that when survivors speak and their grandchildren listen\, history stays alive. \nThis screening will be followed by a talk back from the film’s director Sophie Rose and producer Maddy Kramer\, as well as Evelyne\, and Matt. We will also invite participants to join in small group conversations\, to share their own family stories in honor of the film’s themes of historical rupture and intergenerational memory.

SUMMARY:Dave Portnoy in Conversation:Cancel Me If You Can
DESCRIPTION:Dave Portnoy didn’t set out to be a political lightning rod — but love him or hate him\, he’s here to stay. Join the Barstool Sports founder for the unfiltered story of how he created a media empire. \nDave Portnoy built Barstool Sports by trusting his instincts — and refusing to soften his voice. Now\, in his new memoir Cancel Me If You Can\, he tells the story behind the persona: the risks\, missteps\, reinventions\, and stubborn persistence that carried him from handing out a scrappy Boston sports paper to leading a sprawling digital brand. \nWhat does it mean to build an audience by being unapologetically yourself? How do you navigate success when it arrives alongside scrutiny — and often\, backlash? Hear Portnoy in a candid conversation about ambition\, controversy\, and the evolving rules of media and public life. \nPhoto credit: Paul Morigi/Getty Images for The Stronach Group.

SUMMARY:Rob Reiner: High Comedy to High Drama
DESCRIPTION:As a 24-year-old actor in the groundbreaking 1970’s TV series All in the Family\, Reiner rose to stardom playing the liberal son-in-law referred to as “Meathead” by his conservative father-in-law\, Archie Bunker.  \nFrom there\, Reiner went on to become one of the most versatile and accomplished American film directors of the last four decades. Richie Unterberger will show and discuss clips from throughout Reiner’s memorable acting and directing career. His unique talent was to create scenes that encompassed and blended riotous comedy and serious drama as evidenced in Spinal Tap\, When Harry Met Sally\, Stand by Me\, The Princess Bride\, and A Few Good Men. We’ll also be treated to rare material from outtakes\, trailers\, and TV shows\, with some featuring his father\, the esteemed comedian Carl Reiner.  \nRock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books\, including volumes on the Beatles\, the Who\, the Velvet Underground\, Bob Marley\, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book\, San Francisco: Portrait of a City\, was published by Taschen in 2022.

SUMMARY:Spies & Intelligence: The World of International Espionage
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that a double agent is a spy who pretends to work for a country/organization while secretly working for a different\, often hostile\, one? Deception is central in espionage and counter-espionage operations. Double agents are valuable assets because they can be used to transmit disinformation to the enemy\, identify other enemy agents\, and collect intelligence on the inner workings of the opposing side.  \nAttorney Oak Dowling pulls back the curtain with information and examples of the difference between turned agents\, infiltrators\, and mercenaries. One famous case is the British “Double-Cross System” during World War II\, which was a successful double agent operation\, where German spies were “turned” and used to feed false information to their Nazi controllers.  \nOak Dowling\, JD\, is a retired attorney with 43 years of practice. He’s a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison Law School and a native of Chicago. He was a part-time Instructor of Law at College of Marin and has been an Instructor in the OLLI program at Dominican University for 13 years.  In his law classes\, he uses courtroom drama to demonstrate legal principles.   \nOak has lived in Marin County for 50 years and was happily married for 61 years.  He has been a member of the Marin County Financial Abuse Specialist Team (“FAST”) and was selected as Outstanding Marin County Volunteer of the Year for 2012-2013. As an avocation\, he has performed in theatre in Marin and San Francisco for 15 years.

DESCRIPTION:At just 30\, Lee Yaron became the youngest-ever winner of the National Jewish Book Award’s Book of the Year for “10/7: 100 Human Stories\,” joining the ranks of literary giants like Philip Roth\, Elie Wiesel\, and David Grossman.
