SUMMARY:Torn Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an evening of conversation\, community and learning. We are so excited to present to you Torn: The Israel–Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets. We have to opportunity to feature film participants Alana Zeitchick (Israeli-American Advocate and Hostage Family Member)\, Julia Simon (childhood friend of Omer Neutra) and Rabbi Yehuda Sarna (Executive Director of the Bronfman Center and Interviewee) in this event and hear from them after the screening. This event created in partnership with Moishe House of Williamsburg\, Hells Kitchen\, Harlem\, Upper East Side\, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn NAIM. This is an event specifically open to young adults ages 20-40 years old. \nAfter Hamas’s October 7 attacks and Israel’s war in Gaza\, New York erupts into a poster war over the kidnapped. TORN captures the symbolic battle for public space — where strangers rip\, defend\, and rage in the streets\, and empathy is the first thing to go. As the ceasefire in Israel-Gaza is now in effect and our 20 living hostages have returned from captivity this evening will focus on where we go from here. \nHow do we ask difficult questions and how do we have difficult conversations? These posters explore questions about freedom of speech in America and how do we continue to ask those questions as we begin again. \nPlease join us before the screening at 6pm for some drinks\, light snacks and to mix and mingle. The film will start promptly at 7pm with a talkback following.

SUMMARY:Jacinda Ardern: A Different Kind of Power
DESCRIPTION:Jacinda Ardern at Sixth & I\n\n\nWhat if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first? \nThe Right Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern was elected the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand at the age of thirty-seven\, becoming the country’s youngest Prime Minister in more than 150 years. Ardern exemplifies a new kind of leadership—proving that leaders can be caring\, empathetic\, and effective. After becoming a global icon\, she’s ready to share the remarkable story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt made political history and changed our assumptions of what a global leader can be. \nJoined by special guests\, Ardern will reflect on the struggles\, triumphs\, and deeply personal experiences that shaped her leadership style and what she’s learned along the way. \nwith Politics and Prose Bookstore \n\n\nEvents at Sixth & I \n\nClick here for directions to our historic building.\nFor details about accessible seating and entry\, click here.\nClick here to review our event policies\, security procedures\, and food and beverage policies.\nClick here for step-by-step instructions to transfer your ticket to someone else.\nClick here for step-by-step instructions to transfer your in-person ticket to a virtual ticket

SUMMARY:FED Yom Ha'atzmaut Shabbat Dinner
DESCRIPTION:FED—”Like TED Talks\, but you also get fed”—is dedicated to presenting unconventional and at times completely counterintuitive perspectives to help us gain in-depth access to vantage points we might never have noticed otherwise. In that spirit\, this Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day)\, we present a delicious Israeli Shabbat dinner with FED Talk by our special speaker: Colonel Michael Scott CSC. \n \nMichael Scott served over 30 years in the Australian Army\, with multiple operational deployments\, including Iraq and two tours of Afghanistan. From July 2019 to September 2021\, he was based in Jerusalem while seconded to the United Nations\, with responsibilities spanning Israel\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Jordan\, and Egypt—where he travelled extensively and gained remarkable insights. Michael will share his personal story\, about his time in the region\, and how it led him\, a non-Jewish Australian\, to refuse to be a bystander in the face of rising antisemitism. Instead\, he founded The 2023 Foundation\, a nascent global charity\, whose programs include scholarships and placements designed to provide opportunities that align with its mission to introduce gentiles\, beginning with Australians—who may have little or no prior knowledge or experience with Israel—to its rich culture\, history\, innovation\, and people. \n \nReflecting on Israel’s independence celebration this year—and particularly our experience of it\, from our vantage point in the Diaspora—the current environment around Israel can feel challenging existentially to us as Jews\, and we may legitimately feel discouraged and powerless to change our own reality. Michael Scott\, personally and through his work with the foundation\, is a living testament to the insight that building strong\, strategic allies is one crucial key to our continued safety and security as Jews living in the Diaspora. Come hear his story\, ask questions\, and get energized about this example of working within the present-day reality toward connection\, a shared vision\, and solutions. \n \nLearn more about The 2023 Foundation here. \n \nThe evening will also feature a live Israeli musical performance in tribute to Yom Ha’atzmaut by Soof Sela! \n \nSoof Sela is an Israeli singer-songwriter and pianist based in New York\, known for his warm\, rough voice and soulful performances. His musical journey began in the military “Nahal Band\,” followed by a B.A. in composition at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. After years of collaborating with well-known artists across Israel\, Soof debuted with his album “It’s Not That We Didn’t Know” in April 2021. The album blends Israeli folk-pop with elements of classical\, jazz\, and country\, drawing influences from artists like Billy Joel and Yoni Rechter. It is dedicated to Soof’s late mother\, Razia Sela\, who passed away from cancer a year before the album was recorded. Her memory is honored through a special font based on her handwriting. Now based in New York\, Soof performs across the U.S. while continuing annual musical tours in Israel. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\nSoof Sela\n

SUMMARY:Concert: The Borscht Belt—Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Museum at Eldridge Street’s historic Main Sanctuary on Sunday\, March 23rd at 3pm for a concert and panel discussion about the rise and fall of the so-called “Borscht Belt.” \nInspired by the important history and modern remnants of the Borscht Belt\, as photographed and documented by Marisa Scheinfeld in her first book\, The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland\, the music of The Solomon Diaries project\, featuring clarinetist Sam Sadigursky and accordionist Nathan Koci\, are songs of freedom\, rebellion\, celebration\, tradition\, independence\, loss\, hope\, decay\, and renewal. Fusing sounds of Jewish spiritual and Klezmer music along with classical influences\, Middle Eastern rhythms\, jazz improvisation\, and tinges of Americana\, these songs provide a contemporary lens through which we can trace the Jewish immigrant experience in America. \nAfter Sadigursky and Koci play their set\, they will be joined on stage by Scheinfeld to discuss the rich history of the Borscht Belt\, from the old world where Jewish immigrants were coming from\, to the initial farmers in this area of the Catskills\, to the rise and golden age of the Borscht Belt\, to the crucial leadership of women\, and to the Borscht Belt’s decline. Listen to stirring music\, learn the Borscht Belt’s history through the nostalgic lens of summer swims\, Saturday night dances\, and comedy performances\, and see some incredible photographs of what these iconic places look like now. \nA book signing with Marisa Scheinfeld will follow this program. \nSpecial thanks to McNally Jackson Books\, who will be offering The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland for purchase at this event. \nConcert Tickets (Include Museum Admission):\nAdult $30 (at-the-door $35)\nStudent / Senior $25 (at-the-door $30)\nChild 5-17 $15 (at-the-door $20)\nChild under 5 FREE\nCool Culture Pass / SNAP Benefits $5 \nGET TICKETS HERE \nThere is no reserved seating.

SUMMARY:Brooke Shields
DESCRIPTION:Brooke Shields in conversation with Dr. Sharon Malone at Sixth & I\n\n\nAt fifty-nine\, Brooke Shields feels more comfortable in her skin and more empowered\, confident\, and free than she did decades ago in those famous Calvin Klein ads. This is an era\, insists Shields\, when women are reclaiming agency and power in the prime of their lives\, not receding into the shadows. SUMMARY:A Pro-Israel Discussion with the Pink Haired Pizza Girl Caroline D’Amore
DESCRIPTION:What does a good Catholic Italian girl from LA have to say about Israel? Well quite a bit — and she’s got a lot of people listening. If you’re not one of Caroline D’Amore’s 141K Instagram followers\, then please let us introduce you to the Pink Haired Pizza Girl! Caroline is the owner of “Pizza Girl” restaurant in Venice Beach and has appeared on Hell’s Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey. Caroline is not Jewish\, but she is married to an Israeli\, and since October 7 she has used her online platform to advocate for Israel as a proud non-Jewish ally. Help us welcome her to Detroit to talk about what it means to be pro-Israel and the importance of speaking out. We’ll enjoy an Italian-themed dinner at Soul Café and learn a bit about the café as well as the Soul Studio. \nThe Loop is a Federation initiative focused on engaging with and bringing together Jews living in the westernmost suburbs of Detroit (think Walled Lake\, Northville\, Novi\, Commerce\, Plymouth)\, but all are welcome to attend. \n$50 per person includes discussion and dinner. \nSpace is very limited. Please register in advance. \nMore about D’Amore \nCaroline D’Amore is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a passionate activist. She has been vocal about various social issues\, particularly standing up against hate and antisemitism. After a powerful post she shared went viral\, Caroline began using her platform to advocate for the Jewish community and fight all forms of hate. She has since traveled around the world\, speaking to organizations\, colleges\, and online audiences\, encouraging others to take a stand against intolerance and prejudice. Her activism is rooted in her personal experiences and commitment to creating positive change\, as she continues to inspire others to speak up and get involved in meaningful causes. Through her efforts\, Caroline has become a voice for unity and equality\, alongside her work as the CEO of Pizza Girl. \nThe Loop is powered by the Gerson Innovation Fund. \nThank you to our Leadership \nThe Loop Co-Chairs: \nSara and Scott Bernstein \nJessica and Danny Klein \nDanielle and Aaron Ruskin \nBill Goldstein and Jayme Kirschner\, Affinities Department Chairs
