SUMMARY:Liberal American Jews and Israel: An Inflection Point
DESCRIPTION:Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza has pushed liberal American Jews to a breaking point. The progressive condemnations of Israel have made some Jews on the left feel abandoned and betrayed by their ideological allies\, while actions and rhetoric from Israel’s government—the most right-wing in its history—have made others question whether their values are compatible with supporting a Jewish state that seems headed in an increasingly illiberal direction. \nLeading American Jewish thinkers on Israel Rabbi Jill Jacobs\, CEO of T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights\, Peter Beinart\, journalist and political commentator\, and Michael Koplow\, Chief Policy Officer at the Israel Policy Forum– will offer differing perspectives on how some American Jews have been reevaluating their identities as liberals and their relationships to Israel in a conversation moderated by Senior Rabbi Aaron Potek\, Executive Director of Jewish Life at Sixth & I.

SUMMARY:Noah Feldman & Sheryl Sandberg - To Be a Jew Today
DESCRIPTION:The JCCSF welcomes Harvard law professor and public intellectual Noah Feldman for a discussion of his timely new book To Be a Jew Today: A New Guide to God\, Israel\, and the Jewish People. In conversation with Sheryl Sandberg. \nWhat does it mean to be a Jew? At a time of worldwide crisis\, venerable answers to this question have become unsettled. In To Be a Jew Today\, Noah Feldman draws on a lifelong engagement with his religion to offer a wide-ranging interpretation of Judaism in all its contemporary varieties. How do Jews today understand their relationship to God\, to Israel\, and to each other—and live their lives accordingly? \nWriting sympathetically but incisively about diverse outlooks\, Feldman clarifies what’s at stake in the choice of how to be a Jew and discusses the shared “theology of struggle” that Jews engage in as they wrestle with who God is\, what God wants\, or whether God exists. He shows how the founding of Israel has transformed Judaism itself over the last century—and explores the ongoing consequences of that transformation for all Jews\, who find the meaning of their Jewishness and their views about Israel intertwined\, no matter what those views are. And he examines the analogies between being Jewish and belonging to a large\, messy family—a family that often makes its members crazy\, but a family all the same. Written with learning\, empathy and clarity\, To Be a Jew Today is a critical resource for readers of all faiths. \nNoah Feldman is Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and founding director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law at Harvard University. He specializes in constitutional studies\, with particular emphasis on power and ethics\, design of innovative governance solutions\, law and religion\, and the history of legal ideas. A policy & public affairs columnist for Bloomberg Opinion\, he is the author of ten books including The Broken Constitution and Divided by God. Through his consultancy\, Ethical Compass Advisors\, Feldman advises on how to improve ethical decision-making by creating and implementing new governance solutions. In this capacity\, he conceived and helped architect the Oversight Board for Meta. \nSheryl Sandberg is the former COO of Meta and the Founder and Board Chair of The Sandberg Goldberg Bernthal Family Foundation\, a nonprofit organization that works to build a more equal and resilient world through four key initiatives: LeanIn.Org\, LeanInGirls.Org\, OptionB.Org\, and the Dave Goldberg Scholarship Program. She is the co-author of Option B: Facing Adversity\, Building Resilience\, and Finding Joy with Adam Grant\, and the bestselling author of Lean In: Women\, Work\, and the Will to Lead. A longtime advocate for women and girls\, she recently spoke at the United Nations highlighting the sexual and gender-based violence committed by Hamas during its attacks on Israel on Oct. 7. \n“To Be a Jew Today is a beautiful book\, a necessary and important book. Written with learning\, insight\, and anguish\, it is a provocation to be argued over (I certainly did) and wrestled with\, but it cannot be ignored.” —David Wolpe\, rabbi emeritus of Sinai Temple\, Los Angeles\, and author of David: The Divided Heart and Why Faith Matters \n“More than with any book I’ve read in years\, Jewish readers will draw new insights into their own Judaism from Noah Feldman’s fresh\, fascinating\, and compelling analyses of contemporary Jewish life. Feldman exhibits the gift of all great teachers and influential public intellectuals: the ability to take even the most complex ideas and convey them with clarity\, context\, and honesty.” —Rabbi David Saperstein\, director emeritus of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom \n“In this exciting and passionately argued new book\, Noah Feldman offers us a lifetime of thinking and struggling with being a Jew\, and thinking with Judaism\, in America today. Broad in scope\, sparkling with new insights\, often provocative and daring\, and deeply rooted in the Jewish textual tradition\, Feldman deftly weaves memoir\, philosophy\, legal theory\, and sociological analysis to paint a complex yet accessible portrait of being a Jew and taking Judaism seriously in this crucial time of transition. Highly recommended.” —Shaul Magid\, professor of Jewish studies at Dartmouth College and author of The Necessity of Exile: Essays from a Distance \n“To Be a Jew Today is a field guide to a richer\, more meaningful spiritual life—and not just for Jews. Feldman’s answers to the question of ‘What’s the point of being a Jew?’ offer a whole new paradigm for how to think about Jewishness\, one that will change how you walk through the world\, whether you’re Jewish or not.” —Rabbi Benay Lappe\, president and Rosh Yeshiva of SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva \nAll seating is first come\, first served. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Teaching the Holocaust on Fortnite and Through Gaming Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Luc Bernard shares personal insights and global responses on how he is revolutionizing Holocaust education through virtual worlds and gamin\n\n\nDespite spending many millions of dollars on Holocaust museums and education\, statistics paint a dismal picture of what young people understand about the Nazis attempt to exterminate the Jews. Luc Bernard\, a noted game designer\, has taken a different approach. He created a video game aimed at portraying the Holocaust accurately\, titled The Light in the Darkness\, and on the Fortnite gaming platform\, he developed a virtual museum called Voices of the Forgotten that allows young people to learn about Holocaust in a familiar virtual environment. Bernard will be in conversation with AJU President Jeffrey Herbst about the opportunities the virtual world has to offer for Holocaust education\, how people across the world have responded to his digital creations\, and the opportunities and perils of “gamifying” the mass killing of Jews.

SUMMARY:ANTISEMITISM YESTERDAY\, TODAY AND TOMORROW
DESCRIPTION:For more than two millennia — long before the current wave of antisemitism—Jews have been marked for killing\, brutal attacks\, vilification and discrimination. \n\n\n\nThe Routledge History of Antisemitism is a guidebook to the breadth and depth of conspiracy theories\, libels\, rumors and propaganda that have underpinned the oldest hatred across time and space. \n\n\n\nCo-editors Mark Weitzman and Dr. Robert J. Williams\, along with contributor Professor Magda Teter\, join us to discuss this new volume and antisemitism today in a discussion moderated by Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz\, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary. \n\n\n\nCOO of the World Jewish Restitution Organization\, Mark Weitzman is the senior US delegate to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\, where he was the lead author of IHRA’s Working Definition of Holocaust Denial and Distortion. His edited volume\, Antisemitism — The Generic Hatred: Essays in Memory of Simon Wiesenthal\, received a National Jewish Book Award in 2007. \n\n\n\nExecutive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation\, Dr. Robert J. Williams is the UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education and is the Advisor to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. He regularly advises and has produced work for several intergovernmental organizations\, foreign governments\, and sectors of the US government on issues including antisemitism\, Holocaust denial and distortion\, and supporting Holocaust education and scholarship. His next book will focus on attempts to memorialize and heroize antisemites and fascists who were complicit in the crimes of the Holocaust. \n\n\n\nMagda Teter is a Professor of History and the Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at Fordham. She is the author of many books\, most recently Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism. Her previous book\, Blood Libel (Harvard 2020)\, was the winner of the National Jewish Book Award\, the Roland H. Bainton Prize and the George L. Mosse Prize from the American Historical Association \n\n\n\nThe first woman to be Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary\, Shuly Rubin Schwartz is also Research Professor of American Jewish History with a focus on gender studies. She is the author of The Rabbi’s Wife: The Rebbetzin in American Jewish Life\, which was awarded a 2006 National Jewish Book Award.
