SUMMARY:Purim Masquerade Party with GLOE and Partners
DESCRIPTION:Let’s come together in community and partake in the traditions of Purim\, a holiday celebrating joyous self-expression and revelry. Join GLOE\, the LGBTQ program of the Edlavitch DCJCC\, and our partners for a Purim celebration at Franklin Hall. Make sure to come dressed in your best costume for our costume contest (prizes for most creative\, funniest\, best duo or group\, and best Purim-themed). There will be drag performances\, tarot card readings\, and of course hamantaschen and other Kosher snacks. All are welcome – friends\, partners\, allies\, and community members. \nPurim is a holiday of celebration but also one where we give gifts to those in need: we will be collecting donations of toothpaste and toothbrushes that will be given to those in our community in need as part of the EDCJCC’s Good Deeds Day. This event is open to those ages 21+. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Want to come for free? Sign up here to volunteer with registration at the event. If you have any questions\, please reach out to Stacy at smiller@edcjcc.org. \nPresented by GLOE\, the LGBTQ program of the Edlavitch DCJCC\, and our community partners: NJB+\, NJG\, Bet Mishpachah\, GatherDC\, The Den Collective\, A Wider Bridge\, Honeymoon Israel.

SUMMARY:Queer Rosh Chodesh Group: Adar
DESCRIPTION:The Queer Rosh Chodesh Group will draw on the tradition of feminist Rosh Chodesh gatherings to explore the themes of the upcoming Jewish month through a queer lens. This gathering\, led by Based-In DC’s Rabbi Avigayil Halpern\, will take place monthly on or before Rosh Chodesh\, the first day of the Jewish month\, and is open to all queer-identified Jews in their 20s and 30s. \nThe Queer Rosh Chodesh Group is co-sponsored by Based-In DC and EntryPointDC and GLOE at the EDCJCC. You can come to just one\, come every month\, or whenever suits your fancy. This discussion is for all queer Jews – whether Torah study is a regular part of your life or you’re brand new to it\, we want your wisdom in the conversation. \nThis month\, in honor of the upcoming masquerade holiday of Purim\, we’ll have a conversation (informed by Jewish texts) about gender as a space of joy and play! We will meet this month at Rav Avigayil’s home in Adams Morgan\, address upon RSVP.

SUMMARY:Papa Can You Hear Me: A Spectacular Screening of Yentl
DESCRIPTION:Join The Neighborhood for a special screening of Yentl–Barbra Streisand’s 1983 cinematic masterpiece\, featuring a live performance by Simply Barbra–the premier Barbra drag impersonator who brings the legendary diva to life with unmatched flair. Bonus points for showing up in a Yentl or Barbra-inspired costume! \nYentl tells the story of a young Jewish woman in Eastern Europe who disguises herself as a man in order to pursue her dream of studying torah—something forbidden to women at the time. Directed\, produced\, and performed by Barbra Streisand\, the film blends themes of identity\, love\, and self-determination. It’s a powerful (and campy!) exploration of gender\, tradition\, and the courage to follow one’s heart. To quote Barbra quoting Steven Spielberg\, “It’s the best film I’ve seen since Citizen Kane.” \nDon’t miss Simply Barbra\, who will have you saying “hello gorgeous!” as she channels the greatest star herself with all the glamour\, wit\, and vocal perfection you’d expect. This is more than just a movie night—it’s a celebration of Barbra’s legacy\, LGBTQ+ culture\, and the powerful messages of Yentl\, live from Barbra’s home borough of BK. Join us for an unforgettable evening of cinema and drag\, where the magic of Barbra Streisand is brought to life!

SUMMARY:Queer Rosh Chodesh Group: Shevat
DESCRIPTION:The Queer Rosh Chodesh Group will draw on the tradition of feminist Rosh Chodesh gatherings to explore the themes of the upcoming Jewish month through a queer lens. This gathering\, led by Based-In DC’s Rabbi Avigayil Halpern\, will take place monthly on or before Rosh Chodesh\, the first day of the Jewish month\, and is open to all queer-identified Jews in their 20s and 30s. \n\n\n\nThe Queer Rosh Chodesh Group is co-sponsored by Based-In DC and EntryPointDC and GLOE at the EDCJCC. You can come to just one\, come every month\, or whenever suits your fancy. This discussion is for all queer Jews – whether Torah study is a regular part of your life or you’re brand new to it\, we want your wisdom in the conversation. \n\n\n\nThis month\, we’ll talk about the holiday of Tu Bishvat – “the new year for the trees” –  and ways to connect to the Jewish calendar and year cycle. We’ll also eat yummy fruit!

SUMMARY:Sinners' Shabbat: Hanukkah Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spicy twist on Hanukkah\, where we’ll honor the sacred day of rest\, and the miracle of the oil\, with a night of fiery burlesque\, delicious food\, and more mischievous surprises that would make your bubbie blush! \nInstagram: @sinners.shabbat \nWhat to Expect: A queer\, alt\, and delightfully defiant Hanukkah shabbat party—where the tradition of lighting the menorah and eating latkes meets burlesque\, decadent performances\, and a dress code that’s more “fiddle me on the roof” than “tradition.” You do not need to be Jewish to attend\, just be fun and freaky. \n7:30pm – Doors Open \n8:30pm – Kiddush & Dinner \n9:30pm – Special Performances \n10:30pm-Late – The Hanukkah Revelry \nIt wouldn’t be a Jew-ish event without food\, and a suspicious amount of carbs\, so challah\, latkes\, and a hearty vegetarian meal will be served\, catered by @cheftova . Our venue has a fully stocked bar. \nWhat to wear: It’s a mitzvah to honor Shabbat by dressing in your finest\, so pull out your most dazzling\, daring\, and decadent looks. Think leather\, latex\, lingerie\, and anything that shines brighter than the menorah. Channel your inner Maccabee warrior or glam goddess—If you arrive in a T-shirt\, you will be asked to strip or leave. Inspo for femmes. Inspo for mascs. \nPlease note that tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable. You must be 21+ to attend. If you are interested in volunteering for a free ticket\, please email sinnersshabbat@gmail.com with subject “VOLUNTEER”.
