SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn. Overcoming Trauma: Youth Mental Health in Israel Post 10/7
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this enlightening lunchtime discussion to hear about the amazing work ELEM/Youth in Distress is doing in Israel\, especially in the wake of October 7th. \nOur guest speaker Renana Danon\, ELEM Assistant Director of Clinical Training\, will share how the organization has been forced to pivot its focus to addressing the pervasive and debilitating mental health conditions Israeli youth are experiencing during this time of crisis. She’ll also share firsthand stories from staff and youth in the field\, as Israelis navigate new and complex forms of individual and collective trauma. \nThe event is free. A light kosher lunch will be served. Please register today. \nLooking forward to seeing you there. \nDr. Tracey Stulberg \nEvent Chair \nLior Zisser-Yogev \nCommunity Shlicha \nAbout ELEM \nFounded in 1982\, ELEM/Youth in Distress in Israel is the country’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to treating and transforming the lives of troubled and at-risk youth. \nThe 12\,500 young people they serve annually face-to-face and online deal with tremendous challenges\, such as domestic violence\, substance abuse\, neglect\, bullying\, homelessness and prostitution. \nELEM works with secular and religious Jews; Christian and Muslim Arabs\, including Bedouins; immigrants\, including those from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia; and the LGBT community\, most of whom live on the streets and will not seek help from traditional social service groups. ELEM’s hundreds of professionals and thousands of volunteers don’t wait for referrals to treat these youth but seek them out on their turf — on the streets\, in schools\, on the Internet and at bars and nightclubs. ELEM offers over 90 programs in 42 cities in Israel that provide counseling\, mentoring\, vocational training and a safe space for Israeli youth to envision a positive future for themselves and become productive members of society.

SUMMARY:3GNY Intergenerational Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of food\, friends\, and discussion at our annual Intergenerational Brunch! All in our community of descendants of Holocaust survivors and supporters are invited to eat\, connect\, and learn together. \nWe are honored to welcome this year’s speaker\, Doris Schechter\, who will share her incredible journey of survival and resilience. Born in Vienna to Jewish parents\, Doris and her family fled to Italy at the start of World War II. In 1944\, at the age of six\, she boarded The Henry Gibbins\, a ship bound for New York\, where she and her family became some of the 982 refugees hosted at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in Oswego\, NY—the only shelter in the United States for Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. With the help of Ruth Gruber and Eleanor Roosevelt\, Doris and her family were able to stay in the U.S. after the war\, eventually settling in New York City.
