SUMMARY:Jerusalem as Modern City: A Virtual Tour of the German Colony and Baka
DESCRIPTION:We invite you on a virtual walk of two iconic neighborhoods of Jerusalem starting from the middle of the 19th century and into this day\n\n\nWhen someone thinks of Jerusalem\, they usually imagine the holy sites. Yet\, Jerusalem is also a living modern city\, with all its challenges and beauties. We invite you on a virtual walk starting from the middle of the 19th century\, when the first residents of the Old City left its medieval alleys and settled outside of the walls\, and newcomers came and brought a modern and new way of life. This process of modernization\, stretching through different political landscapes and an ever-changing human mosaic of religions\, ethnic identities and languages\, has been going on since then. We will dive into two iconic neighborhoods to discover some of the characteristics of this process more in-depth\, through stories and personal impressions. \n\n\n\nAbout Eszter \nEszter Koranyi was born in Budapest\, Hungary. After completing her MA in International Relations\, and working in an NGO\, she decided to set out to explore alternative ways of human cooperation. This led her to kibbutz Neot Semadar\, in the middle of the Negev desert in Israel. After three years\, she wanted to understand more about the complexity of the country and\, therefore\, moved to Jerusalem. \nShe has been living there for the last 8 years\, where she works for Combatants for Peace\, an NGO promoting cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians for peace and justice. She is also a co-founder of Freedom School\, a study program on peace activism for young Israeli Jews and Palestinians. She is about to complete her studies as an official tour guide.

SUMMARY:The Life of Jews in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique exploration of the life of Jews in Japan\n\n\nThere have been Jews in Japan since the 16th century and in the 20th century\, the city of Kobe had the largest community. Although Japan was allied with the Nazis during WWII\, it initially welcomed Jewish refugees\, and the diplomat Chiune Sugihara saved thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe. But after Pearl Harbor\, many were deported to Shanghai. Today there is a small expatriate business community in Japan. In this talk\, you will meet two very special presenters\, both of whom grew up in Kobe. They will provide an overview of the Japanese Jewish story and share their families and their own personal experiences about being Jewish in Japan. \n\n\n\nAbout S.David and Rachel\n \nS. David Moche was born in Kobe\, Japan. His family was originally from Baghdad and his father moved to Japan\, in 1936 as a single businessman. He has a special interest in the Jewish community there and has carried out oral interviews to document its history and also created a blog from them. He is a businessman living in New York City with his wife\, Nancy\, and two daughters\, Elsie and Ma’yan.\n \n \nRachel Wahba is a San Francisco Bay Area based writer and psychotherapist. An Egyptian-Iraqi Jew\, Rachel was born in India and grew up stateless in Japan within an international community based in Kobe. The wait to immigrate to the United States took twenty years. The many dimensions of her exile and displacement are a constant theme in her professional work as well as her activism as an advisory board member for JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa).

SUMMARY:Jewish Africa: A Photographic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual photographic journey through Africa’s rich and varied Jewish life\n\n\nSince antiquity the Jewish people have had a presence in Africa\, making some of its communities among the oldest in the world. In August 2012 and over the next 4 years\, Jono David set out on a photographic journey across the continent with the aim to document the life\, culture\, and history of the Jewish people from one end of Africa to the other. \nThis interactive presentation delineates some of that work while taking viewers on a virtual journey through a photographic project that took me to 30 countries. The presentation will spotlight the emerging Black Jewish groups in Uganda\, Cameroon\, and Ghana as well as the historical Orthodox community of Djerba (Tunisia)\, Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa in Kinshasa\, (Democratic Republic of Congo) and the Jewish community of South Africa. \nWith your contribution you will also be donating to the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC)\, South Africa. The JHGC explores the history of genocide in the 20th century with a focus on the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. \n\n\n\nAbout Jono \nJono David is an American-British independent photographer who\, since the 1990s\, has traveled the globe to amass what is perhaps the most extensive archive of contemporary images of Jewish heritage and heritage sites in the world – a growing compendium of more than 120\,000 photographs from 116 countries and territories. \nJono is based in Tokyo where he lectures in English at several universities. His online Jewish photo archive is www.JewishPhotoLibrary.com. For his other photographic pursuits\, visit his online portfolio: www.jonoDavid.com. His book\, The Jews of Africa: Lost Tribes\, Found Communities\, Emerging Faiths\, is available now and can be previewed here: www.jonoDavid.com/thejewsofafricabookpreview.

SUMMARY:Jewish Barcelona: now you see it\, now you don't
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the fascinating history of the Jews of Barcelona.\n\n\nJewish presence in Barcelona can be traced back to between the mid-9th and the end of the 14th century. What are the hints to this Jewish past? Are there any artifacts from those days? Where are they kept? How do we connect with our history? Which are our places of memory today? The early 20th century marks the beginning of a second chapter of Jewish life in the city. We will learn about the irregular evolution of this community\, the second largest in Spain. And we will discover how Jews contributed to some of the “most Spanish” creations. \n\n\n\nAbout Dominique \nBorn in New York and raised in Buenos Aires\, Dominique Tomasov is the grandchild of Jews from Belarus and Ukraine. She obtained her Architecture degree at the University in Buenos Aires and she is also registered in New York and Barcelona. A founding member of the first egalitarian synagogue in Spain\, she is responsible for its Chevra Kadisha. She specializes in Jewish heritage as an independent researcher\, educator and activist. \nShe co-founded The Center of Studies Zakhor\, established to protect the ancient Jewish cemetery in Barcelona. Thanks to the Center’s actions\, the site received official designation as a historical landmark. Other projects include research to define its extension (with a grant from The Rothschild Foundation) and the publication of the book “Funerary traditions in Judaism”. \nSince arriving in Spain\, Dominique believes that the Jewish narrative has to go out on the streets\, and her first ground breaking guided walk was in 1999. Since then\, sh e has has developed expertise in explaining to the general society about Jewish identity\, and to international Jewish visitors about local Jewish culture and history. This is her contribution to the construction of a pluralistic society. After living and working in three countries\, she brings together a special combination of history\, current affairs\, opinions and personal experience.

SUMMARY:Jewish Life in China: Tales from the Far East
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the fascinating history of the Jews of China.\n\n\nFor many people\, it is surprising to learn that there is a long and rich history of Jewish communities in China. In this talk we will explore the three places with the most relevant historical presence of Jews: Kaifeng (where a community was established in the Middle Ages and whose descendants still live today); Harbin (where a community from Russia thrived around the Trans-Siberian Railway)\, and Shanghai (where thousands of Jews came as refugees during WWII). We will also learn how Jewish life is today for those who currently live in China. \n\n\n\nAbout Pablo \nPablo Faivel Levinton was born in Argentina\, where he graduated in Economics. After having worked in the energy sector he got bored of the routine and decided to start a new challenge by studying a master’s degree in Beijing\, China\, where he lived since 2017. \nAs a passionate traveler and advocate of Jewish culture\, Pablo has studied Yiddish from his youth and traveled intensively\, participating in different local Jewish communities wherever he has been. He runs a popular YouTube channel dedicated to visiting faraway places around the world where there are\, or have been\, Jewish communities. In regular episodes that blend English\, Spanish\, Yiddish\, and Mandarin he shows his journeys and adventures to his more than 100\,000 subscribers.

SUMMARY:Jews of Burma: The Tribe That Vanished
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the history of the Jews of Burma.\n\n\nThis is the story of the Burmese Jewish – a community of Jews who mostly arrived from Iraq and India in the heydays of the British Empire – that once flourished but quickly ceased to exist. In its short history\, the Burmese Jewish community went through the archetypical Jewish narrative\, with inner rifts and mortal danger from the outside. Its members either immigrated or assimilated\, but is there still hope for the revival of Jewish life in this distant South-East Asian country? Being a photojournalist\, I took on the opportunity to photograph the remains of the Jewish presence in Burma today and the quickly vanishing traces of the Jewish presence in Burma’s past. \n\n\n\nAbout Misha \nMy name is Misha Gulko\, and I’m a photo-journalist from Brooklyn\, New York\, born in Odessa\, Ukraine. Odessa was once a center of Jewish life in the Russian Empire and later in the USSR. The words “Jews” and “Odessa” were once synonyms. But in the USSR\, the Jewish culture was heavily suppressed\, and once immigration became possible\, most Jews (including our family) fled from the country and my city. The Jewish community rapidly shrank\, and so did the feeling of our presence and influence on my city’s life and folklore. That’s why the story of the disappearing Jewish community of Burma felt so close to home.
