SUMMARY:Gleams and shadows of Jewish life in France
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the rich history of the Jews of France.\n\n\nFrance has currently the largest Jewish population in Europe. The history of French Jews successively alternated between periods of tolerance and prosperity and the ordeal of insecurity and anti-Semitism\, with both phenomena sometimes coexisting in parallel. Paris born Emmanuelle Stein will provide an overview of the Jewish presence in France from the Middle Ages to present day\, while describing what pluralistic Judaism looks like here today through the eyes of a young Jewish woman and activist for human rights. \nWith your contribution you will also be donating to Exilophone\, an NGO dedicated to the integration of refugees in France through arts and music. They organize music workshops\, concerts and festivals that connect refugees with locals and help building bridges between different communities (Jewish\, Muslims\, Christians and others). \n\n\n\nAbout Emmanuelle \nEmmanuelle Stein was born in Paris\, France\, where she was always anchored to Jewish life through school and youth movements. She graduated from Sorbonne’s Master of International Relations\, Humanitarian Aid\, and International Development and completed a training in Cultural Entrepreneurship.\n \n \nShe has many years of experience working with refugees and has also worked for the FUSJ (Fonds Social Juif Unifié – French Jewish community) as a project manager for young Jews. In April 2018\, she set up the NGO “Exilophone” dedicated to the integration of refugees through arts and music.

SUMMARY:Speeddating with Aleeza Ben Shalom
DESCRIPTION:When you arrive you will be given materials such as a nametag and a scorecard. We will brief you and let you know how long each round of speed dating will last\, how many rounds there will be\, and whether there are any other rules. We divide the participants into two groups: one group will remain seated throughout and one group will rotate seats after each round. \nOnce the speed dating event starts\, you will be paired up with a different partner for each round. Each round\, or “date\,” can last anywhere between two minutes and 10 minutes. Depending on the number of participants at the event\, you will typically be paired up with anywhere between five and 10 partners over the course of the event.During each round\, you can chat with your partner and get to know them. A bell or timer will go off when the round is over\, signaling that it’s time to change places and meet a new partner. You will be given a few minutes in between each round to mark your scorecard and make notes on it. \nAfter all the rounds are completed\, you are invited to stick around for a mingle\, during which you can spend more time with the other participants. At the end\, you will be asked to submit your final scorecard or fill out a form indicating which of the participants you might like to see again. \nAfter the event\, the organizers of the event will let you know whether any of the people you indicated interest in are interested in seeing you too. They will share the person’s contact information with you and after that\, it’s up to the two of you to get in touch. \nThe event will be hosted by SImcha and Estie Tolwin who helped launch speeddating in NYC\, and have hosted over 1000 people at events. Aleeza Ben Shalom will be co-hosting and sharing tips and wisdom during the speeddating rounds.

SUMMARY:Jewish Finland: Home of kosher reindeer and Kabbalat Shabbat at midnight
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through Finland’s Jewish history.\n\n\nFinland is often regarded as one of the world’s most secularised countries even though the biggest percentage of its population belongs to the historically dominant Lutheran church. The local Jewish minority\, numbering approximately 1200 people\, is one of the northernmost congregations in the world. It’s organised around two Orthodox communities in Helsinki and Turku. The Helsinki synagogue was inaugurated in 1906 and the community centre in 1961. The Jewish Community of Helsinki offers many activities and services to its members from birth until old age. \nFinland is one of the few countries with an Eastern European (Litvak) Jewish community that was unaffected by the Holocaust. The number of converts and mixed marriages is exceptionally high. Still\, the community remains officially Orthodox and maintains a distinct Finnish-Jewish identity. There is hardly any other similarly double natured\, Orthodox-rooted yet progressive Jewish congregation in the world. The rapidly increasing diversity of Finland is also reflected in the Jewish community where the blend of cultures\, languages and religious views is very colourful. The current presentation gives an introduction to various sites of Jewish Finland\, such as the synagogues\, its cemeteries and other historical locations with a Jewish connection. \nWith your contribution you will also be donating to the Helsinki Jewish Community for the improvement of the security of its premises. \n\n\n\nMercédesz Czimbalmos and Dr. Dóra Pataricza are researchers at Åbo Akademi University (Turku/Åbo in Finland)\, in the project “Boundaries of Jewish Identities in Contemporary Finland – Minhag Finland”. \nMercédesz (Merci) is a doctoral candidate in Comparative Religion primarily working on the case study of her doctoral dissertation\, entitled “Intermarriage and Conversion”. The study focuses on intermarriage and conversion among Finnish Jewry\, analysing changes in religious practice\, observance and marriage patterns in a historical light. In addition to her studies\, she is a project coordinator and a researcher in the project “Reconstructing the Fate of Hungarian and Bačka-Serbian Victims of the Holocaust”. She is an active member of the Jewish Community of Helsinki\, a vice-chairperson of JOY\, the Jewish Organization of Young Adults in Finland. \nDóra is a post-doctoral researcher in History and conducts a case study entitled “Foodways” which aims at researching the multi-ethnic culinary traditions of Jews living in Finland. Starting from January 2020\, she has been the project director at the Szeged Jewish Community\, funded by the Claims Conference to reconstruct the fate of Hungarian and Bačka-Serbian victims of the Holocaust. Dóra is active in the Helsinki Jewish Community\, she has been volunteering as the programme manager of Limmud Helsinki for a couple of years and she is also on the board of WIZO Finland. \nBoth Dóra and Mercédesz are certified tour guides in various languages.

SUMMARY:NIGHT OF THE MURDERED POETS
DESCRIPTION:On the night of August 12\, 1952\, 13 Jewish writers\, artists\, journalists\, and scientists were executed by a firing squad in Moscow’s infamous Lubyanka prison after years of confinement and torture to extract false confessions of treason and espionage. This mass execution\, which would become known as the “Night of the Murdered Poets\,” was one of Joseph Stalin’s last crimes before his death six months later. \nFollowing years of repression of Yiddish and Jewish culture\, a renewed campaign began in 1948 after the state-sponsored assassination of Solomon Mikhoels\, who had led the Moscow State Jewish Theatre (GOSET). Mikhoels also led the Soviet Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAC)\, formed during World War II to drum up Jewish support in the free world for the Soviet war effort. The truth about Solomon Mikhoels death (staged as an automobile hit-and-run in Minsk in 1948) was poorly concealed even then and publicly confirmed soon after Stalin’s death. The remaining members of the JAC were arrested beginning later that same year. \nAmong the casualties of the “Night of the Murdered Poets” were five Yiddish writers who were members of the JAC: David Bergelson\, David Hofshteyn\, Perets Markish\, Itsik Fefer\, and Leyb Kvitko\, as well as legendary actor and Mikhoels’ successor as director of the GOSET\, Benjamin Zuskin. Every year since the murders were revealed\, Yiddishist organizations worldwide have honored the victims of that awful night\, along with other victims of Soviet repression\, with a memorial evening. \nThe five writers were all born in the Russian Empire. COJECO BluePrint fellow Yelena Shmulenson (herself a native of Crimea) offers a new staged documentary\, examining how the Soviet state repressed Yiddish culture\, to be performed on Thursday\, August 10 at 7 pm. \nAppearing in the upcoming program\, sponsored by the Congress for Jewish Culture together with COJECO\, are Shmulenson and her husband Allen Lewis Rickman\, both stars of stage and screen in English & Yiddish (the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man\, Off-Broadway’s Tevye Served Raw)\, along with Suzanne Toren and Shane Baker. This performance will be in English\, Yiddish and Russian\, with English supertitles. \nThe Wild Project is located at 195 East 3rd Street\, between Avenues A & B. Reservations are $10 and can be made through https://www.brownpapertickets.com.  \nFor more information visit https://www.CongressForJewishCulture.org or call 212-505-8040.

SUMMARY:Jews of Burma: The Tribe That Vanished
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the history of the Jews of Burma.\n\n\nThis is the story of the Burmese Jewish – a community of Jews who mostly arrived from Iraq and India in the heydays of the British Empire – that once flourished but quickly ceased to exist. In its short history\, the Burmese Jewish community went through the archetypical Jewish narrative\, with inner rifts and mortal danger from the outside. Its members either immigrated or assimilated\, but is there still hope for the revival of Jewish life in this distant South-East Asian country? Being a photojournalist\, I took on the opportunity to photograph the remains of the Jewish presence in Burma today and the quickly vanishing traces of the Jewish presence in Burma’s past. \n\n\n\nAbout Misha \nMy name is Misha Gulko\, and I’m a photo-journalist from Brooklyn\, New York\, born in Odessa\, Ukraine. Odessa was once a center of Jewish life in the Russian Empire and later in the USSR. The words “Jews” and “Odessa” were once synonyms. But in the USSR\, the Jewish culture was heavily suppressed\, and once immigration became possible\, most Jews (including our family) fled from the country and my city. The Jewish community rapidly shrank\, and so did the feeling of our presence and influence on my city’s life and folklore. That’s why the story of the disappearing Jewish community of Burma felt so close to home.
