SUMMARY:Jewish Life in China: Tales from the Far East
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through the fascinating history of the Jews of China.\n\n\nFor many people\, it is surprising to learn that there is a long and rich history of Jewish communities in China. In this talk we will explore the three places with the most relevant historical presence of Jews: Kaifeng (where a community was established in the Middle Ages and whose descendants still live today); Harbin (where a community from Russia thrived around the Trans-Siberian Railway)\, and Shanghai (where thousands of Jews came as refugees during WWII). We will also learn how Jewish life is today for those who currently live in China. \n\n\n\nAbout Pablo \nPablo Faivel Levinton was born in Argentina\, where he graduated in Economics. After having worked in the energy sector he got bored of the routine and decided to start a new challenge by studying a master’s degree in Beijing\, China\, where he lived since 2017. \nAs a passionate traveler and advocate of Jewish culture\, Pablo has studied Yiddish from his youth and traveled intensively\, participating in different local Jewish communities wherever he has been. He runs a popular YouTube channel dedicated to visiting faraway places around the world where there are\, or have been\, Jewish communities. In regular episodes that blend English\, Spanish\, Yiddish\, and Mandarin he shows his journeys and adventures to his more than 100\,000 subscribers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for engaging presentations and discussions on Jewish Futurism and connections and tensions between Judaism and effective altruism.\n\n\nJoin  David Zvi Kalman (https://www.hartman.org.il/person/david-zvi-kalman/)\, a scholar of Jewish law\, the history of technology\, and ethics\, and Hillel Ehrenreich\, Director of Effective Altruism for Jews (EAforJews.org) for a presentation and discussion on the frontiers of Jewish social and ethical thought. \nDavid Zvi will be presenting on “The Case for Jewish Futurism\,” exploring tensions between the current rapid rate of social and technological change with existing narratives of Jewish history\, and proposing a new framework for keeping Judaism vibrant and relevant for our current moment and the long-term future. \nHillel will be presenting on connections and tensions between Jewish tradition and Effective Altruism\, a social movement which aims to figure out how we can help others most effectively and put those findings into practice (https://www.effectivealtruism.org/articles/introduction-to-effective-altruism). \nSome questions and themes the talks will explore include: \n\nHow will Judaism be affected by and how can it positively influence the development of transformative emerging technologies like artificial intelligence?\nWhat is Judaism’s vision for the far future?\nHow should we balance concern for Jewish priorities vs. global priorities?\nWhat do Jewish texts and tradition have to say about our obligations to the global poor\, animals\, and future generations?\nIs there a uniquely “Jewish” approach to doing good?
