SUMMARY:Jewish Africa: A Photographic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual photographic journey through Africa’s rich and varied Jewish life\n\n\nSince antiquity the Jewish people have had a presence in Africa\, making some of its communities among the oldest in the world. In August 2012 and over the next 4 years\, Jono David set out on a photographic journey across the continent with the aim to document the life\, culture\, and history of the Jewish people from one end of Africa to the other. \nThis interactive presentation delineates some of that work while taking viewers on a virtual journey through a photographic project that took me to 30 countries. The presentation will spotlight the emerging Black Jewish groups in Uganda\, Cameroon\, and Ghana as well as the historical Orthodox community of Djerba (Tunisia)\, Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa in Kinshasa\, (Democratic Republic of Congo) and the Jewish community of South Africa. \nWith your contribution you will also be donating to the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC)\, South Africa. The JHGC explores the history of genocide in the 20th century with a focus on the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. \n\n\n\nAbout Jono \nJono David is an American-British independent photographer who\, since the 1990s\, has traveled the globe to amass what is perhaps the most extensive archive of contemporary images of Jewish heritage and heritage sites in the world – a growing compendium of more than 120\,000 photographs from 116 countries and territories. \nJono is based in Tokyo where he lectures in English at several universities. His online Jewish photo archive is www.JewishPhotoLibrary.com. For his other photographic pursuits\, visit his online portfolio: www.jonoDavid.com. His book\, The Jews of Africa: Lost Tribes\, Found Communities\, Emerging Faiths\, is available now and can be previewed here: www.jonoDavid.com/thejewsofafricabookpreview.

SUMMARY:Young Professionals Rosh Hashanah Shabbat Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Don your finest to celebrate and reflect 5784 with friends you know and those you’ve yet to meet over a special erev Rosh Hashanah dinner for Young Professionals (ages 21-39). Register now! \nFollowing the dinner\, you are invited to join us for our Shir Chadash service\, a lively\, participatory experience to usher in the New Year. \nRosh Hashanah is both a joyous time and a period of serious religious reflection. One of the common customs of Rosh Hashanah is to eat apples dipped in honey and to wish others a “sweet” New Year. The preeminent symbol\, however\, is that of blowing the shofar — a “trumpet” generally made from the horn of a ram (because of its association to the binding of Isaac\, the Torah portion read for Rosh Hashanah). The shofar also should be bent or curved in a shape to symbolize the bent and humbled spirit appropriate on Rosh Hashanah. \nLearn more about High Holy Days at Emanu-El. SUMMARY:High Holy Days 2023
DESCRIPTION:Ohel Ayalah offers a free\, walk-in service to meet the needs of any Jew or guest\, in particular\, Jews in their 20s or 30s\, who do not have a place to pray on the High Holidays.\n\nMost synagogues require the purchase of a ticket to attend their High Holiday services. Ohel Ayalah does not. Ohel Ayalah believes the Jewish public should be able to worship at services that are free and open to all. Every Jew should be embraced. However\, we respect the need of synagogues to charge fees to help defray the costs of their High Holiday services.\n\nthree guys\, HH12At Ohel Ayalah\, it is possible for a Jew to wake up on Rosh Hashanah morning or Kol Nidrei night and say\, “I feel like going to the synagogue today (or tonight) and being with other Jews.”\n\nThe free\, walk-in service at Ohel Ayalah means that Jews can join a celebration of the High Holidays without having to decide in advance. Every Jew should feel welcome in a synagogue on the High Holidays\, whether or not they are a member\, whether or not they made advance arrangements to attend\, and whether or not they purchase a ticket. This is the mission of Ohel Ayalah.
