SUMMARY:The Life of Jews in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique exploration of the life of Jews in Japan\n\n\nThere have been Jews in Japan since the 16th century and in the 20th century\, the city of Kobe had the largest community. Although Japan was allied with the Nazis during WWII\, it initially welcomed Jewish refugees\, and the diplomat Chiune Sugihara saved thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe. But after Pearl Harbor\, many were deported to Shanghai. Today there is a small expatriate business community in Japan. In this talk\, you will meet two very special presenters\, both of whom grew up in Kobe. They will provide an overview of the Japanese Jewish story and share their families and their own personal experiences about being Jewish in Japan. \n\n\n\nAbout S.David and Rachel\n \nS. David Moche was born in Kobe\, Japan. His family was originally from Baghdad and his father moved to Japan\, in 1936 as a single businessman. He has a special interest in the Jewish community there and has carried out oral interviews to document its history and also created a blog from them. He is a businessman living in New York City with his wife\, Nancy\, and two daughters\, Elsie and Ma’yan.\n \n \nRachel Wahba is a San Francisco Bay Area based writer and psychotherapist. An Egyptian-Iraqi Jew\, Rachel was born in India and grew up stateless in Japan within an international community based in Kobe. The wait to immigrate to the United States took twenty years. The many dimensions of her exile and displacement are a constant theme in her professional work as well as her activism as an advisory board member for JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa).

SUMMARY:Shabbat Shabbang: Friendsgiving for 20s + 30s
DESCRIPTION:In Person. With Thanksgiving a few weeks away\, let’s gather with good friends and good food and remember the things for which we can be thankful. After dinner\, we’ll kick back with wine and feed our competitive sides with a classic game night. \n\n\n\nWHAT IS SHABBAT SHABBANG? \n\n\n\nWe begin every Shabbat Shabbang in the lobby for rituals and appetizers. It’s a moment to come together as a Shabbat community and begin the process of letting go of the hustle of our week. From there we go off to our selected program rooms for a dairy meal\, delicious wines\, and an hour of stimulating conversations\, artistic experiences\, and illuminating learning opportunities. We reconvene for desserts and coffee. \n\n\n\nYour weekend has not just begun. It’s kicked off—with a shabbang.

The Shul Sisters\, the first female cantorial trio in the US\, have been collaborating since January 2019. With the fundamental belief that joining together in song reminds us of our inherent worth and beauty\, the Shul Sisters continue to inspire people across the globe. \nQuestions?
