SUMMARY:Screening of Film "Dressing America"
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to be Jewish to love “Dressing America\,” but Jewishness is pretty much the whole point. The word schmatta (Yiddish for\, loosely\, “this old thing?”) is spoken repeatedly and lovingly. Historians\, designers\, journalists and executives ponder why so many Jews were drawn to the trade and how they built a major industry.\n– excerpt from NY Times article on “Dressing America” before its showing on WNET\, PBS\, New York\, 2014.\nRSVP \nAbout the filmmaker – Steven Fischler\nSteven Fischler and Joel Sucher founded Pacific Street Films in 1971\, and they have produced and directed documentary films for venues as diverse as the United Nations\, the BBC\, and commercial and public television in the United States. They have received numerous awards including Guggenheim Fellowship in Films\, Emmy Awards\, Cine Golden Eagles\, and the John Grierson Award for Social Documentaries.\n\nPacific Street Films produced many social and historical documentaries\, such as “From Swastika to Jim Crow\,” which tells the story of Jewish Refugee scholars driven from Germany by the Nazis who found teaching positions in the Jim Crow South. Their films include portraits of Hollywood artists like Martin Scorsese\, Oliver Stone\, and Jessica Lange\, as well as investigations of police surveillance and misconduct.\n\nFischler was the director of the PBS-broadcast documentary\, “Beyond Wiseguys: Italian Americans & The Movies” and the producer of “Dressing America: Tales From The Garment Center\,” as well as the writer and director of the documentary “Five Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History.”

SUMMARY:Interfaith Social Justice Book Club: Wild Dark Shore
DESCRIPTION:Dive into powerful literature alongside community members of B’nai Jeshurun and St. Paul & St. Andrew\, as we join together in exploring books that amplify social justice themes. Each month\, we’ll gather together in person to reflect on and discuss our monthly read. We’ll read both fiction and nonfiction works that wrestle with the intersecting injustices we collectively face. \nThis month we’re reading *Wild Dark Shore* by Charlotte McConaghy. Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater\, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank\, Shearwater was once full of researchers\, but with sea levels rising\, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Then\, during the worst storm the island has ever seen\, a woman mysteriously washes ashore.

SUMMARY:Jewish DragIcons: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Golan Moskowitz about the little-known history of Jewish drag in the U.S.–from Yiddish drag kings in the early 1900s to the iconic performers and activists of the 1960s and beyond (hello\, Sadie\, Sadie the Rabbi Lady!)–and the diversity of Jewish drag today. Through stories and film clips\, we’ll explore the intersection of drag and Judaism\, celebrate the icons of the past century\, and explore the provocative questions this art form has always raised. \nThen\, because no conversation about drag is complete without live performance\, we’ll present a full-blown Jewish drag show! Hosted by drag artist Yochai Greenfeld\, the evening will feature performances by Alvah Klempt\, Matzah Belle Soup\, and Yiddish drag king artist Miryem-Khaye Siegel for an unforgettable celebration of fabulous Jewish culture. \nFinally\, we’ll close the night with a dance party\, so stick around to keep the Pride celebration going!
