SUMMARY:Tashlich at the Franklin Cider Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join The Well as we WELLcome 5785 at the Franklin Cider Mill! \nThere’s no better place to kickstart a new year surrounded by community. Friends of all ages are welcome to join us as we participate in the ancient ritual of Tashlich\, symbolically casting away our shortcomings from the past year and setting intentions for the year to come. The cider and donuts pair perfectly with apples and honey anyway 🙂 \nMembers of The Well team will be posted up at the cider mill between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Feel free to stop by and say hi at any time\, but we’ll plan to have a short tashlich service and shofar blast every 30 minutes: at 1:30pm\, 2:00pm\, 2:30pm\, and 3:00pm; so you can join in for a few moments of reflection and intention-setting in community no matter when you arrive! \nRegistration is not required\, but feel free to RSVP so we know to look out for you. Shanah Tova!

SUMMARY:Into the Water: Brooklyn Waterfront Meditation and Tashlich Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Jewish High Holidays\, the tradition of Tashlich is an invitation to take stock of the past year and reflect deeply. Are we living lives that reflect our values? Are we acting with purpose? Are we embodying our truth? \nThis free workshop will take place in beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park\, where meditation teacher Yael Shy will lead us through a guided contemplative journey on the themes of the Jewish new year and the Tashlich ritual. Following this\, Cantor and renowned musician Basya Schechter will lead us to the waterfront with song to blow the shofar and perform the Tashlich ceremony. \nTashlich is an ancient ritual in which individuals or communities traditionally gather by a flowing body of water\, and throw pieces of bread or pebbles into the stream to symbolically represent misdeeds\, mis-alignments\, and regrets from the past year. The word “Tashlich” in Hebrew means “casting away.” This casting away represents a spiritual cleansing–an opportunity to let go of what is holding us back\, and a chance to begin again in the coming year. \nInto the Water is an embodied\, open\, and completely free opportunity to be present\, thoughtful\, and reflective at the most meaningful moment in the Jewish calendar. All are welcome – no Jewish or meditation background is necessary. Bring a cushion or chair to sit on and your bravery\, honesty and presence to the discussion! Exact coordinates will be provided ahead of the event. \nThis program is in partnership with The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life and Romemu Brooklyn. \nBasya Schechter is best known for her group\, Pharaoh’s Daughter\, a 7 piece world music ensemble that travels effortlessly through continents\, key signatures\, and languages with a genre-bending sound cultivated after her many hitchhikes in Africa and the Middle East. She is also the Hazzan and musical director of Romemu Brooklyn\, a fast growing\, progressive\, spiritually adventurous satellite community\, as well as on Fire Island’s flip flop community during the summers. In support of her nearly 10 albums\, she has toured through America\, Europe\, South America\, Israel and Canada\, as well as being featured at Lincoln Center\, Summerstage and Joe’s Pub. \nYael Shy is the CEO of Mindfulness Consulting\, LLC\, where she teaches and consults on mindfulness for universities\, corporations\, and private clients around the world. She is the author of the award-winning book\, What Now? Meditation for Your Twenties and Beyond (Parallax\, 2017)\, and the founder of Mindful NYU\, the largest campus-based mindfulness initiative in the US. Yael is a graduate of the Institute for Jewish Spiritualty’s Jewish Mindfulness Teacher Training Certification and has over 20 years of meditation practice experience. She is Adjunct Faculty at New York University and has been featured on Good Morning America\, CBS\, Fox 5 News\, and in Time Magazine and the Harvard Business Review. Connect with Yael at yaelshy.com and @yaelshy1 on Instagram. \nThe Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life is a Jewish community and cultural center in Brooklyn. We produce programs that raise up underrepresented perspectives and welcome the thousands of Brooklynites that have not yet found their Jewish home. We are creating a welcoming space that reflects the spirit of Brooklyn–future-thinking and deeply historical\, iconoclastic\, and sacred. \nRomemu Brooklyn seeks to integrate body\, mind\, and soul in Jewish practice. We offer passionate services and communal spiritual connection to build authentic relationships with both ourselves and our community.

SUMMARY:New Year\, Changed World: Conversation and Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a host gathering to consider what it means to mark Jewish time during the High Holiday season while commemorating the first anniversary of October 7th. The past year has been filled with big feelings and outpourings of emotion. Many of us have felt deep sadness over the loss of innocent lives\, sympathy for those forced to leave their homes\, and significant confusion around our own beliefs\, values\, and alliances. To best support you – our hosts – during this time\, we invite you to come together to explore how we can hold the High Holidays and the anniversary of October 7th through the lens of ritual. We invite you\, through guided facilitation\, to think about how rituals can hold our feelings\, experiences\, sorrows and hopes for the world we want to build together. This gathering will be facilitated by Tova Birnbaum\, former Director of Jewish Content at OFJCC\, who wrote OneTable’s new guide A New Year\, A Changed World: High Holidays After October 7th. \nExact location to be shared upon RSVP approval \nBrunch will be provided! We will be in the backyard of a home. \nWhat to expect: Learning\, Food and Discussion \nNo one will be turned away for lack of funds\, just email us 🙂 \nIn partnership with JYP and ENGAJ!

SUMMARY:WE WILL DANCE AGAIN - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:This program is co-produced by the Israeli Film Festival of Philadelphia\, Kaiserman JCC\, and Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.\nThe Nova Music Festival was supposed to be a celebration of life\, love\, and music for thousands of young people but became one of the first targets when Hamas launched the deadliest terror attack in Israel’s history. WE WILL DANCE AGAIN is told through the eyes of more than a dozen survivors\, many of whom videotaped their experiences as the massacre unfolded. The film weaves together eyewitness accounts from over a dozen survivors\, along with footage captured by both the victims and Hamas.\nWhile the film’s challenging and emotionally charged scenes may be difficult to watch\, it ultimately delivers a powerful message of solidarity\, friendship\, and humanity in the face of evil\, and highlights the bravery of the young Israeli spirits who survived the attack and became heroes against all odds.

The Tashlich ceremony will start at 5:30. \nWhere: Gather at Chinatown Park\, at the corner of 6th and I street NW. Catty corner to the synagogue. Final route and destination will be shared with registrants 2 days before the event. \nDon’t own a bike? No Problem! The start and end points are near multiple Cap Bikeshare docks\, and we’ll make sure you won’t break the 30 minute limit. \n— \nThis slow\, social ride for Generations Z\, Y\, and X is suitable for cyclists of all levels. It’s the perfect way to make new friends\, get comfortable with city riding\, find new biking buddies — or just to “do Jewish” in a whole new way. \nWe’ll explore about 5ish miles of DC — parts you may not see every day (or you’ll see them in a whole new way). \nAnd as always\, it’s FREE! (Whoop!) \nQuestions? Interested in serving as a ride marshall or helping to plan other rides? Don’t hesitate to reach out: dcjewsonbikes@gmail.com. \nQuick note on safety: Because this is a community-organized and lay-led event\, every rider is responsible for his or her own safety and the organizers are not liable for any injuries that occur before\, during or after the ride. By registering for this event\, you agree to those terms. If you have any questions about bike safety\, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We want to make sure this is a fun\, safe\, and meaningful experience for everyone!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special gathering and dinner on the anniversary of October 7th to come together as a community to reflect\, remember\, and honor the past year and our shared identity as Jewish people at the home of the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel. \nThe night will include self-guided tours\, candle lighting\, charity donation tables\, letter-writing to soldiers and hostages\, a delicious kosher dinner and bar service\, words from community leaders\, and a safe space to grieve and share the past year among the large and supportive YJP community. \nThis day serves as a moment of unity\, resilience\, and homage to the rich history and heritage that binds us. Through prayers\, discussions\, and communal activities\, we will cherish those who have shaped our path and have reaffirmed our strength as a people. A prominent activist will also share their thoughts on unity\, tradition\, and the importance of solidarity. \nThis day is an opportunity to come together in unity\, paying homage to who we are\, and embracing our shared past and future as Jewish people. All are welcome. \n**A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to our Charity Partners**

SUMMARY:October 8th: Unwind and Process in Community Space
DESCRIPTION:As we mark the one year anniversary since the tragic events of October 7th\, 2023\, we’re holding space for a wide variety of feelings and the diversity of expression of grief\, loss\, and pain. We know the 7th will be full of emotions and also full of commemorative events\, so we’re inviting young adults to join us the next day in a quiet\, calming\, community space. \nHere’s how it works: \nA private space in Royal Oak (address will only be sent to registered attendees the day before the event) will be open from 5:00-7:00 PM. You can come and go at any time during this window.\nWhen you arrive\, there will be different areas with music\, simple crafts\, journaling supplies\, and light snacks. We encourage you to move through the space in the ways that’s most comfortable for you. Feel free to bring your own activity items as well.\nParticipants are welcome to hang out and chat together. We just ask that noise levels stay low to respect those who prefer to be in quiet space.\nOther than a quick welcome at the door\, there will be no formal program\, spiel\, or presentation. The space is yours for community connection and processing\, whatever that looks like for you. \nRegistration is required to receive the address. If you’re not totally sure if you’ll make it\, or decide last minute that you can’t\, no worries! This program is open-house style between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00pm. Better to have the address and decide not to come by than decide last minute that you want to stop by and not have the address! \nFor any questions\, please don’t hesitate to be in touch! SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of Israel: Journey Through the North's Holy Sites
DESCRIPTION:Israel’s north has long played a major role in the development of Jewish history and theology. Additionally\, it has spots that are revered by Druze and Baha’is. On this tour\, we will first explore some of the sites connected with the Jewish history of the area. We will then visit a Druze holy site and use that as a springboard to discuss this lesser-known minority group who make up a small but significant percentage of Israel’s population (many of whom serve in the IDF with distinction). The Bahai Gardens in Akko and Haifa\, regarded as the first and second holiest places in the world\, respectively\, by the Bahai religion\, will be our final stops. Nosson will also touch on how the North has played a role during the current war in Israel\, and how Israelis of all ethnicities and religions have been affected.

SUMMARY:Tribe 12 Sings: Monthly Music Circle
DESCRIPTION:Song is a connector\, connecting us to our voices and our bodies\, to those who surround us\, to those who have sung these melodies before and those who will sing them after us. Here at Tribe 12\, we want to find more ways for our community to connect in deep in our joy and in our struggles through song. Rachel Chang\, head of A Queer Nigun Project\, and Rabbinic Intern Molly will lead us in song with guitar and drum. We invite you to bring your voice AND any other instrument you wish: guitar\, drum\, flute\, violin\, and more to play along. It’s all welcome! \nThis is a monthly offering and each month we will alternate between a location in West Philly and the Weitzman museum. These events are mask optional though we do request that everyone who attends take a covid test prior to arriving and if you are experiencing any covid like symptoms please stay home. There will be air purifiers running throughout the event.
