SUMMARY:theatre dybbuk Presents: The Villainy You Teach
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss The Villainy You Teach\, an exciting performance art installation piece by theatre dybbuk\, coming to DC for the first time as part of their residency in our region. \nInvestigating Shakespeare’s controversial The Merchant of Venice\, The Villainy You Teach invites Museum attendees to witness an actor perform Shylock’s famous “Hath not a Jew eyes” speech repeatedly over the course of most of the length of the play\, reciting it dozens\, if not hundreds\, of times. This action is accompanied by a simultaneous performed reading of Merchant in its entirety – its words acting as the container within which Shylock’s speech exists. \nVisitors can stay in the space for the duration of the (approximately) 2.5 hour performance or come and go\, engaging with the event in the manner in which they choose. This program is supported in part by a grant from The Covenant Foundation. \nLearn more about this performance piece > \nLearn more about theatre dybbuk’s residency > \nThis ticket includes access to the Museum’s ongoing exhibitions. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum of Maryland which is presenting the production’s companion performance piece\, The Merchant of Venice (Annotated)\, or In Sooth I know Not Why I am So Sad on Thursday\, January 25. SUMMARY:The Righteous Man from Fulda
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for the Chicago premiere of The Righteous Man from Fulda.\n\nThis compelling new documentary by Ethan Bensinger traces the filmmaker’s own family Holocaust history through the unlikely story of the two tablecloths that belonged to Hugo Sichel\, the filmmaker’s great uncle\, who lived in Fulda until his deportation in December 1941. Sichel gifted the tablecloths to his friend and non-Jewish neighbor Paul Römhild\, who had put himself and his family at risk to secretly supply Sichel with food. Eight decades later\, after a chance encounter\, Bensinger travels to the Hessian hometown of his great uncle to receive the tablecloths from Paul Römhild’s daughter\, who had kept them safe throughout the years\, and to reunite their two families.\n\nThis documentary interweaves one family’s story with the broader events surrounding Kristallnacht in Fulda in November 1938\, offering insights into the town’s Jewish history and highlighting how the memory of the Holocaust continues to impact the present.\n\nAfter the screening\, Ethan Bensinger will be joined in conversation by Elizabeth Loentz\, Professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago.\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served.\n\n\nPlease bring a photo ID for check-in; advanced registration on Eventbrite required.\n\nLocation:\nGoethe-Institut Chicago Building\n150 N. Michigan Ave.\nRandolph Room\, 3rd Floor\nChicago\, IL 60601\n\nIf you can’t make this event\, don’t miss our second screening at 6pm on Tuesday\, January 30th at the DANK Haus. More info and registration here.\n\nThis program is presented by the Goethe-Institut Chicago and DANK Haus German American Cultural Center.

Join The Shabbat Drop\, a weekly Jewish newsletter*\, for our first book club meeting! No matter where you are in the world\, we’ll meet a few times a year on Zoom (link will be emailed the morning of – if you’re in NYC\, look out for in-person meet ups) to discuss all types of Jewish books\, from memoirs to fiction to books on antisemitism\, you name it. We’ll discuss Here All Along\, Sarah Hurwitz’s (former Obama speechwriter) memoir of re-discovering her Judaism at 36. Even if you are halfway through the book or never picked it up at all\, join us for what will be an engaging discussion on the Jewish journey. This event was originally planned for October 2023\, but was postponed due to the war. With rampant antisemitism and time to reflect\, I now feel it’s the time to delve into Judaism and what it means to us. * All RSVPs will be automatically signed up for The Shabbat Drop. You will be mailed the Zoom link before the event. Read about and buy the book here: https://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/here-all-along-a-reintroduction-to-judaism

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Righteous Man From Fulda
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join the DANK Haus German American Cultural Center and the Goethe-Institut Chicago for a free screening of The Righteous Man from Fulda.\n\nThis compelling new documentary by Ethan Bensinger traces the filmmaker’s own family Holocaust history through the unlikely story of the two tablecloths that belonged to Hugo Sichel\, the filmmaker’s great uncle\, who lived in Fulda until his deportation in December 1941. Sichel gifted the tablecloths to his friend and non-Jewish neighbor Paul Römhild\, who had put himself and his family at risk to secretly supply Sichel with food. Eight decades later\, after a chance encounter\, Bensinger travels to the Hessian hometown of his great uncle to receive the tablecloths from Paul Römhild’s daughter\, who had kept them safe throughout the years\, and to reunite their two families.\n\nThis documentary interweaves one family’s story with the broader events surrounding Kristallnacht in Fulda in November 1938\, offering insights into the town’s Jewish history and highlighting how the memory of the Holocaust continues to impact the present.\n\nFollowing the screening\, filmmaker Ethan Bensinger will be in discussion with Leora Auslander\, Associate Chair of the Department of Race\, Diaspora\, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago.\n\nAdvanced registration here is appreciated: https://dankhaus.com/event-5534971/Registration\n\nLocation:\nDANK Haus German-American Cultural Center\n4740 North Western Ave. \nChicago\, IL 60625\n\nIf you can’t make this event\, don’t miss our other screening at 5pm on Saturday\, January 27th at the Goethe-Institut Chicago!
