SUMMARY:On-Site Program: Echoes of History: Is This the Holocaust?
DESCRIPTION:For many\, the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7\, 2023 have triggered historical and/or personal/familial memories of pogroms and anti-Jewish violence that echo through history. How do those parallels help us understand current events through the context of Jewish and world history\, and at what point do those comparisons cause harm by distorting history? This session will clarify how understanding the past can help us better address the present day and work toward a better future. Join Stephen D. Smith\, CEO of StoryFile\, and former Executive director at USC Shoah Foundation Institute\, as he explores this topic. \nReserve your spot for this FREE program: https://ihm.ec/echoes \nCommunity Partners: ADL Midwest; Evelyn R. Green AJC Chicago Regional Office; Sheerit Hapleitah \nSupported by David P. Brody Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Practices for Real Life with Base Logan Square
DESCRIPTION:Join Rav Moshe for a 5-part learning series in partnership with Atra-IYUN. What is a life well-lived\, and how do we achieve such a thing? Gratitude\, spirituality\, divinity\, resistance\, redemption – these themes offer a glimpse into the conversations shared in this learning cohort. Here is an overview of what we will be learning together. As always there will be snacks and drinks! \nDates: 2/1\, 2/8\, 2/15\, 2/22\, 2/29\nTime: 7:30PM- 9:30PM \nThe sign up form will close the morning of Thursday\, Feb. 1st \nQuestions: ravmoshe@metrochicagohillel.org \nSign up: https://forms.gle/36sFST8ts2GeM72p6

SUMMARY:Community-Wide Friday Night Hub
DESCRIPTION:In May 2022\, The Streicker Outreach Center reimagined Friday night worship services to reflect the sensibilities of young professionals\, ages 21–39\, with the melodies of our ancient prayers rewritten by Israeli superstar David Broza\, who performed with a back-up choir of 12 and a 20-member band\, the experience enhanced by brilliant video lighting. \n\n\n\nThose services – called Friday Night Hub – brought thousands of young professionals to Temple Emanu-El to experience the magic that is Shabbat. \n\n\n\nThis February\, for the first time – and for one night only – Friday Night Hub will be open to the entire community\, regardless of age. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this chance to experience what the Israeli newspaper Haaretz called a “musical prayer phenomenon.”

SUMMARY:Shalom Hartman Institute x The Well: Jewish Learning Series Part 2: Solidarity\, Empathy & Action
DESCRIPTION:The Well’s Jewish learning partnership with the Shalom Hartman Institute is back for our second installment! \nAt this session\, we’re going to dive into ideas of Solidarity\, Empathy\, and Action. We’re thinking about questions like these: Does in group solidarity inhibit or inspire empathy towards the other? What is the dynamic between group loyalty and empathy? How do we balance our care for those close to us and our moral obligations towards those who are farther away?We will look at several models of Jewish particularism and universalism in an attempt to explore whether a love of one’s own lies in contrast to or compliments a love for the other. \nWe’ll be joined by Shalom Hartman Institute Senior Faculty and Rabbi Shoshana Cohen. Learn more about her in the bio below. \nDue to the generosity of donors\, there is no cost to attend. Please note that this program is available exclusively for young adults\, approximately ages 21-40. Space is limited and advance registration is required: https://jlive.app/events/6733The location will be sent to registered attendees the day before the program. While this event is part of a series\, participants do not need to have attended the previous session\, and there is no committment to attend any future sessions. \nLearn more about Rabbi Shoshana Cohen\, guest educator for the 2/12 session:Rabbi Shoshana Cohen is a Senior Faculty member and serves as teacher and mentor for North American gap-year students studying in Israel\, preparing them for Jewish life in college\, and supporting them after they return to their campuses in North America.
