SUMMARY:Jerusalem as Modern City: A Virtual Tour of the German Colony and Baka
DESCRIPTION:We invite you on a virtual walk of two iconic neighborhoods of Jerusalem starting from the middle of the 19th century and into this day\n\n\nWhen someone thinks of Jerusalem\, they usually imagine the holy sites. Yet\, Jerusalem is also a living modern city\, with all its challenges and beauties. We invite you on a virtual walk starting from the middle of the 19th century\, when the first residents of the Old City left its medieval alleys and settled outside of the walls\, and newcomers came and brought a modern and new way of life. This process of modernization\, stretching through different political landscapes and an ever-changing human mosaic of religions\, ethnic identities and languages\, has been going on since then. We will dive into two iconic neighborhoods to discover some of the characteristics of this process more in-depth\, through stories and personal impressions. \n\n\n\nAbout Eszter \nEszter Koranyi was born in Budapest\, Hungary. After completing her MA in International Relations\, and working in an NGO\, she decided to set out to explore alternative ways of human cooperation. This led her to kibbutz Neot Semadar\, in the middle of the Negev desert in Israel. After three years\, she wanted to understand more about the complexity of the country and\, therefore\, moved to Jerusalem. \nShe has been living there for the last 8 years\, where she works for Combatants for Peace\, an NGO promoting cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians for peace and justice. She is also a co-founder of Freedom School\, a study program on peace activism for young Israeli Jews and Palestinians. She is about to complete her studies as an official tour guide.

SUMMARY:Make Some ‘Shroom at Yad Ezra
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun(gi) way to spend your Sunday afternoon? Meet us at Yad Ezra for a sporetacular mushroom growing workshop and volunteer opportunity! We’ll learn a bit about the art and science of growing mushrooms in the winter months\, and then get to try our hand at making mushroom grow kits. The majority of the kits we make will be left in Yad Ezra’s Giving Gardens Greenhouse to fruit\, and the fully-formed mushrooms will then be distributed to Yad Ezra clients. But you can take a kit home too!\n\nAs we continue to stand with Israel during this devastating and tragic time\, we recognize that it is essential for us to continue to come together as a Jewish community. Any opportunity to strengthen our Jewish bond\, with each other and with the Jewish people in Israel and around the world\, is important now more than ever.\n\n$8 includes mushroom kit as well as bagels and coffee.\n\nSpace is limited. Please register online before November 30.\n\nThank you to our co-chairs: Jeff Sondheimer\, Alyse Waldhorn\, Jeremy Zickerman\n\nThis event is intended for young adults ages 21 to 39.

SUMMARY:Klezmer Brunch Revival: Chanukah Edition
DESCRIPTION:A musical pre-Chanukah jam and Klezmer brunch featuring Daphna Mor and The Shul Band.\n\n\nJoin The Neighborhood and musical guests Daphna Mor and The Shul Band for a holiday Klezmer concert over bagels and jelly donuts. \n\n\nThis family-friendly event will bring together an all-star group of Jewish musicians to get us into the Chanukah spirit. Daphna Mor will lend her virtuoso recorder playing and vocals to The Shul Band’s high energy sound. They will collaborate on Klezmer songs\, Sephardic grooves\, Chanukah specials\, and more. Special guests TBA.\n\n\nYour ticket includes a bagel brunch spread\, donuts\, and tea and coffee. If you want something fancy or alcoholic\, that can be purchased through the cafe. \n\n\nIf you would like to attend this event and the ticket price is an obstacle please contact The Neighborhood via info@theneighborhoodbk.org. \n\n\nPraised as a ‘Recorder virtuoso’ and for her “astonishing virtuosity” by The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune\, musician Daphna Mor has performed as an instrumentalist and vocalist throughout Europe and the United States both as a soloist and ensemble player. Recent solo appearances include Tanglewood festival\, Lincoln center\, the Met Museum in New York\, and St Martin’s in the Fields in London with Apollo’s Fire Orchestra. As member of the orchestra\, Mor performed with The New York Philharmonic\, American Classical Orchestra\, New York City Opera and Orchestra of St. Luke’s to name few. She has appeared in a duo with Joyce DiDonato on the singer’s album tour for In War and Peace and can be heard on Sting’s album If On A Winter’s Night for Deutsche Grammophon. Mor is an acclaimed interpreter of Sephardic Music\, and co leads the Global Music ensemble East of the River together with Nina Stern. Their new album Ija Mia is set for release in March 24 on AVIE records. As an active member in NY’s Downtown Jewish Music Scene\, Mor performed with the band Pharaohs Daughter in venues as at the Knitting Factory\, Stone\, Tonic and recorded for John Zorn Tzadik Label. \nBorn in the oldest standing synagogue in New York\, THE SHUL BAND plays Jewish music with exuberant virtuosity. Rooted in Jewish folk music but drawing on the musical wellsprings of New York City and the whole wide world\, the quintet and their musical friends aspire to transcend their sources and create compelling\, moving music with every performance. From Klezmer to Kashmir\, liturgical melodies to Israeli dances\, THE SHUL BAND is equally prayerful and raucous\, meditative and joyful. Featuring musicians from the United States\, Mexico\, and Colombia\, The Shul Band is a true downtown New York City ensemble equally at home on the concert stage\, the synagogue\, or playing Jewish wedding horas. The Shul Band was most recently the musical headliner of the first annual Borscht Belt Festival in the Catskill Mountains of New York and was featured in a National Public Radio story about the festival. Also in 2023\, The Shul Band was commissioned by TheLast Frontier arts organization to collaborate on a rooftop program with Sufi dancers in Brooklyn\, NY. Other performances include Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall\, The Angel Orensanz Foundation\, Most Arts Center (London)\, Le Poisson Rouge\, the Israeli Day Parade\, Ellis Island\, and The Sembrich Museum in Lake George\, NY. \n\n\nThis event will be photographed.

SUMMARY:The Jewish Experience of the Southern USA
DESCRIPTION:Spanning thirteen states and three hundred years\, the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in New Orleans explores the diverse relationships\, experiences\, and environments encountered by Jewish communities in the American South. We’ll discuss artifacts and stories from early Jewish immigrants as they navigated southern spaces to find and build communities. Learn how southern Jews maintained their identity and became part of the fabric of southern society. Learn more about lesser-known stories of southern Jewish experiences during pivotal aspects of American history. \nAbout Lizzi \nLizzi Meister\, the Public Programs Manager at the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience\, will be our tour guide. She’s originally from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin where she went to Jewish summer camp in the north woods and developed a love for engaging programming. Her love for the South came during her time as a Community Engagement Fellow in Jackson\, Mississippi at the Institute of Southern Jewish Life. Before moving to New Orleans to work at the Museum\, Lizzi lived in Seattle\, getting her Masters in Museology at the University of Washington and working with a Jewish co-op. She enjoys continuing to weave her love of museums\, programming\, and Jewish stories at the MSJE.
