SUMMARY:Tribe 12 Israel Series: Sharing Ideas and Hopes Across Difference
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, we are committed to holding more space for our community to process as this war continues.\n\n\nIn December\, we hosted a space to come together as a community to process the current situation in Israel and Gaza. Our community\, as well as our staff\, is not monolithic – we contain a broad range of perspectives on this issue. In listening to these perspectives\, we have centered three core emotions echoing in our community: grief\, fear and hope. For this event we gathered as one community to break bread together and share a bit from our hearts. Then\, we offered a choice between three small group conversations\, each facilitated by a member of our staff\, that centered one of these three emotions. \nIn 2024\, we are committed to holding more space for our community to process as this war continues. We’ve decided to launch a monthly gathering\, rotating between grief\, fear and hope. Every session is drop-in and you can come to as many or as few as you feel called to attend. Our February gathering will be a conversation facilitated by Tribe 12’s Executive Director Rabbi Megan GoldMarche. This will be a space to talk constructively across differences about what should happen next\, about what actions you are taking and want to invite others to take to ensure peace and security in the region. You should come ready to share your thoughts\, listen to others and ask questions that help you better understand different perspectives. All voices are welcome here and respectful challenges will be encouraged and heavily facilitated. Dinner will be provided. \nFor the third gathering\, save the date:March 27th – Fear Writing Circle \n________________________________ \nTribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. We welcome people who identify as Jewish\, whose partner is Jewish\, or who are exploring Judaism. Tribe 12 seeks to include all individuals regardless of gender or identity expression\, religious history and practice\, and financial circumstances. We strive to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including disabled individuals\, to engage fully. If you require any accommodations please see our page on accommodations. Feel free to contact us with any questions at info@tribe12.org

SUMMARY:The Richness of Rossini: Operas of a Bel Canto Master
DESCRIPTION:Born on February 29th\, Rossini only had a birthday every 4 years\, but he deserves to be celebrated every year. This fascinating figure in the history of music created his very own musical style in the bel canto (“beautiful singing”) period of the early 1800s. His music is unmatched for its effervescent wit\, dazzling virtuosity\, and brilliant flair. San Francisco Opera’s Dramaturg (Scholar in Residence) Emeritus Kip Cranna will use subtitled video to highlight beloved Italian comic works such as The Barber of Seville\, The Italian Girl in Algiers and Cinderella\, and imposing serious operas like Tancredi and Semiramide\, culminating with his final masterpiece\, the French grand opera William Tell. Together we’ll exult in glorious singing and compelling storytelling. \nClifford (Kip) Cranna\, Dramaturg Emeritus of San Francisco Opera\, served on the staff for over forty years and was Director of Music Administration for over thirty years. In 2008 he was awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal\, the company’s highest honor\, and in 2012 he received the Bernard Osher Cultural Award for distinguished efforts to bring excellence to a cultural institution. In 2014 he received the Star of Excellence Award for outstanding service to the programs of the San Francisco Opera Guild. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford University. For thirty years he was Program Editor and Lecturer for the Carmel Bach Festival. He lectures and writes frequently on music and teaches at the Fromm Institute at USF and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at U.C. Berkeley\, Dominican University\, and San Francisco State.

SUMMARY:Jewish Community Connection & Listening Circle
DESCRIPTION:In these challenging times filled with uncertainty for both Israelis and Palestinians\, we are feeling division across many parts of our lives. It is not surprising that horrific events have brought strong emotions and different reactions have emerged within our personal and professional circles\, making it hard to feel heard and to connect across difference. We know\, though\, that community matters most during especially difficult times. \nIn support\, we’re creating a space where friends and community members can share about what’s in your hearts and on your minds at this moment. The focus won’t be on ideological or political debates\, rather\, it’s an opportunity to share and to empathically listen to each other’s experiences. \nOur professionally trained facilitator(s) will provide a compassionate and empathic space through guidance and modeling. We’ll practice open and kind listening\, even if we disagree or have different experiences. We’ll facilitate connection in small groups\, with clear ground rules\, and there will be moments to share together as a larger group. \nJoin us in this shared space of understanding\, compassion and connection. \nWho is This For? \nFor this event\, we are especially guided by the Jewish value of K’lal Yisrael (כְּלָל יִשְׂרָאֵל) “Jewish community as a whole or Jewish inclusivity” as we strive toward pluralism. We want to be explicit in our invitation to members of Jewish community across the political spectrum. We want you here no matter your political position\, questions\, or activism and as long as you can respectfully and kindly participate in spaces of mixed affinity\, politics\, and listening. If you have questions about whether this event is for you\, you can email Carey at caverbook@jccsf.org. \nThis is for members of the Jewish community* who are all ages\, people who are practicing Jews\, who are reconnecting to Jewish life\, and who are connecting to Jewish identity for the first time. This is for Ashkenazi\, Sephardi\, and Mizrahi Jews and Jews with interfaith backgrounds. There will be optional affinity spaces for Jews of Color and for LGBTQIA+ Jews. \n*members of the Jewish community includes people who are Jewish\, Jew-ish\, married/partnered to a Jew\, raising Jewish family\, exploring conversion\, matrilineal and patrilineal Jews\, and those who regularly attend synagogue / Jewish community gatherings.

SUMMARY:ANTISEMITISM YESTERDAY\, TODAY AND TOMORROW
DESCRIPTION:For more than two millennia — long before the current wave of antisemitism—Jews have been marked for killing\, brutal attacks\, vilification and discrimination. \n\n\n\nThe Routledge History of Antisemitism is a guidebook to the breadth and depth of conspiracy theories\, libels\, rumors and propaganda that have underpinned the oldest hatred across time and space. \n\n\n\nCo-editors Mark Weitzman and Dr. Robert J. Williams\, along with contributor Professor Magda Teter\, join us to discuss this new volume and antisemitism today in a discussion moderated by Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz\, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary. \n\n\n\nCOO of the World Jewish Restitution Organization\, Mark Weitzman is the senior US delegate to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\, where he was the lead author of IHRA’s Working Definition of Holocaust Denial and Distortion. His edited volume\, Antisemitism — The Generic Hatred: Essays in Memory of Simon Wiesenthal\, received a National Jewish Book Award in 2007. \n\n\n\nExecutive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation\, Dr. Robert J. Williams is the UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education and is the Advisor to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. He regularly advises and has produced work for several intergovernmental organizations\, foreign governments\, and sectors of the US government on issues including antisemitism\, Holocaust denial and distortion\, and supporting Holocaust education and scholarship. His next book will focus on attempts to memorialize and heroize antisemites and fascists who were complicit in the crimes of the Holocaust. \n\n\n\nMagda Teter is a Professor of History and the Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at Fordham. She is the author of many books\, most recently Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism. Her previous book\, Blood Libel (Harvard 2020)\, was the winner of the National Jewish Book Award\, the Roland H. Bainton Prize and the George L. Mosse Prize from the American Historical Association \n\n\n\nThe first woman to be Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary\, Shuly Rubin Schwartz is also Research Professor of American Jewish History with a focus on gender studies. She is the author of The Rabbi’s Wife: The Rebbetzin in American Jewish Life\, which was awarded a 2006 National Jewish Book Award.
