DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to make something from the heart with our TOV (Tikkun Olam\nVolunteers) Co-Chair Emily Parr Gottsegen of @stickemstickerart on Instagram\nwho is going to help us get crafty and send some love to Israeli soldiers.\nEmily takes old school stickers from the 80s and 90s (Fuzzies and Oilies\, ring\na bell?) and turns them into unique and personalized silhouette works of art.\nCreate one for yourself and one for an IDF soldier to let them know we’re\nthinking of them here in Detroit. \nIn addition\, we will learn about Dignity Grows\, a cause TOV is committed to\nsupporting this year. Dignity Grows works to combat “period poverty” by\nproviding girls and women with the hygiene products needed to participate in\nwork\, school and everyday life during menstruation. Learn more about lesser-known stories of southern Jewish experiences during pivotal aspects of American history. \nAbout Lizzi \nLizzi Meister\, the Public Programs Manager at the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience\, will be our tour guide. She’s originally from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin where she went to Jewish summer camp in the north woods and developed a love for engaging programming. Her love for the South came during her time as a Community Engagement Fellow in Jackson\, Mississippi at the Institute of Southern Jewish Life.Before moving to New Orleans to work at the Museum\, Lizzi lived in Seattle\, getting her Masters in Museology at the University of Washington and working with a Jewish co-op. She enjoys continuing to weave her love of museums\, programming\, and Jewish stories at the MSJE.

Millet will be joining us in person to share her account of events that took place on that fateful day. \nIn the wake of the harrowing events of October 7\, the world grappled with the aftermath\, surrounded by a haze of misinformation that clouded the truth. In an era dominated by secondary sources\, the “Faces of October Seventh” project emerged as a clarion call for authenticity and connection. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of firsthand narratives\, aiming to cut through the noise and bring the voices of survivors directly to communities and campuses across North America. \nBen-Haim is an educator\, plans workshops and parties\, and works as a DJ. During her summers she worked at a camp for children with special needs in New York. She believed\, and still does\, in the power of love and in spreading light as a way of life. \nA light lunch will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic interactive journey through Turkey’s rich Jewish history.\n\n\nThe history of the Jews in Anatolia started 2400 years ago with the arrival of Romaniot\, Mizrahim and Karaits followed later by Ashkenazim and Sephardic Jews. We will examine ancient synagogues\, Jewish settlements and cemeteries belonging to different eras and traditions\, as well as important events of WWI and WWII. Sephardic cuisine\, music\, Judeo Spanish language\, ethnographic and liturgical objects from the museum collection will be explained. Finally we will explore today’s vibrant Jewish life in Turkey. \nWith your contribution you will also be donating to the Jewish Museum of Turkey (officially Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews). \n\n\n\nAbout Nisya \nNisya Isman Allovi is Director and Curator of The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews. Born in Istanbul\, graduated from the International Relations Faculty of Bilgi University and Cultural Heritage and Tourism\, she has attended advanced curatorial seminars at AEJM (Association of European Jewish Museums) and in the Federal Republic of Germany. She was also a Kaplan Fellow @ Yesod Cohort II\, and has conducted presentations in various countries about “Jews of Turkey”. Married with two children\, Nisya is an active member of the Istanbul Jewish community.
