SUMMARY:Tacos & Torah: Shai Held Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbinic Intern Molly Paul for a special Tacos and Torah. This month’s Tacos and Torah coincides with a special museum event where Rabbi Shai Held discusses his book\, Judaism Is About Love. In his book Shai addresses a misinterpretation of the Jewish tradition that has shaped the history of the West: Christianity is the religion of love\, and Judaism the religion of law. He shows that love is foundational and constitutive of true Jewish faith\, animating the singular Jewish perspective on injustice and protest\, grace\, family life\, responsibilities to our neighbors and even our enemies\, and chosenness. \nWe will gather at 5:45pm ahead of the event for a vegetarian dinner with a text study and discussion on Rabbi Held’s ideas beginning promptly at 6pm. We will then join the museum event at 7pm. This tacos and torah is for anyone interested in learning more about how love is at the center of Jewish\, you do not need to have read his book to attend!

SUMMARY:Live Performance: A Night in Miami
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum with Chicago’s Emmy-Award-winning Orbert Davis\, trumpeter\, composer\, and educator; along with his Jazz Quartet and Lidice Oran\, vocalist; for a celebratory evening inspired by the hustle and bustle of Jewish life in South Beach. More than music\, this program is a tribute to the resilience\, camaraderie\, and indomitable spirit of the “shtetl in the sun.”\nA mere two square miles with over 20\,000 elderly Jews\, including New York transplants and Holocaust Survivors\, South Beach was once an energetic and thriving hub that held Jewish services outdoors with sun-drenched beaches as a backdrop. In the late 1970s\, photographer Andy Sweet captured the essence of this vibrant community with his camera\, dispelling the common stereotype of “God’s Waiting Room.” Many of these colorful snapshots are on display in the Museum’s current special exhibition\, Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980.\nComplimentary signature cocktails by KOVAL will be served.\nReservations required. Free to the public: https://ihm.ec/nightinmiami\n“Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980” is a project of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and Andy Sweet Photo Legacy.\nIllinois Holocaust Museum’s presentation of “Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980” is made possible with generous support from:\nSUPPORTERS – Golder Family Foundation\nADDITIONAL FUNDERS – Mark and Lisa Pinsky
