SUMMARY:The Life of Jews in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique exploration of the life of Jews in Japan\n\n\nThere have been Jews in Japan since the 16th century and in the 20th century\, the city of Kobe had the largest community. Although Japan was allied with the Nazis during WWII\, it initially welcomed Jewish refugees\, and the diplomat Chiune Sugihara saved thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe. But after Pearl Harbor\, many were deported to Shanghai. Today there is a small expatriate business community in Japan. In this talk\, you will meet two very special presenters\, both of whom grew up in Kobe. They will provide an overview of the Japanese Jewish story and share their families and their own personal experiences about being Jewish in Japan. \n\n\n\nAbout S.David and Rachel\n \nS. David Moche was born in Kobe\, Japan. His family was originally from Baghdad and his father moved to Japan\, in 1936 as a single businessman. He has a special interest in the Jewish community there and has carried out oral interviews to document its history and also created a blog from them. He is a businessman living in New York City with his wife\, Nancy\, and two daughters\, Elsie and Ma’yan.\n \n \nRachel Wahba is a San Francisco Bay Area based writer and psychotherapist. An Egyptian-Iraqi Jew\, Rachel was born in India and grew up stateless in Japan within an international community based in Kobe. The wait to immigrate to the United States took twenty years. The many dimensions of her exile and displacement are a constant theme in her professional work as well as her activism as an advisory board member for JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa).

SUMMARY:Ira Glass with Etgar Keret
DESCRIPTION:THIS AMERICAN LIFE PODCAST EPISODE:HALF-BAKED STORIES ABOUT MY DEAD MOTHER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTwo professional storytellers board a bus headed out of Tel Aviv . . . and a podcast is born. \n\n\n\nIf that sounds suspiciously like a line from an episode of public radio’s This American Life\, it’s hardly surprising because one of those storytellers on the bus was Ira Glass\, the architect\, host and producer of the show. \n\n\n\nThe other was one of Israel’s most famous authors\, the short-story writer Etgar Keret. \n\n\n\nGlass has spent his life telling tales about extraordinary ordinariness — of two warring Mall Santas from the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas; of two infants switched at birth and the mother who waited 43 years to let them know; of the Japanese survivors of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake who’d been unable to say goodbye to loved ones caught in the catastrophe and found consolation in leaving them messages in a phone booth. \n\n\n\nKeret\, on the other hand\, has an affinity for the absurd and a penchant for shaping dreams into logic. He even wrote a tale about a man competing in the World Lying Championship\, certain he’d win because he’s “never been afraid to give the truth a black eye and swear it’s pink.” \n\n\n\nBut the podcast spawned on that bus in Israel\, Half-baked Stories about My Dead Mother\, reflects simultaneously the intimacy of normal life that is neither the zeitgeist of This American Life nor the quasi-reality of Keret’s imagination. \n\n\n\nAfter all\, some characters are larger — even more unbelievable — than life\, and Etgar’s mother\, Orna\, was one of them. A survivor of the Warsaw ghetto\, she was\, in his telling\, simultaneously vengeful and loving\, Maria in West Side Story and Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. \n\n\n\nIn a live performance of their podcast about Etgar’s mother\, Glass and Keret bring Orna and their own storytelling prowess to life.
