SUMMARY:Modern Loss: An Evening of Community & Candid Conversation About Grief Featuring Rebecca Soffer
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny\, Rabbi Michael Moskowitz and guest speaker\, Rebecca Soffer\, for a candid\, warm\, and even humorous conversation exploring Rebecca’s book\, The Modern Loss Handbook\, and the global movement to destigmatize the universal experience of grief while encouraging people to find meaning and live richly. \nThe Modern Loss Handbook is what author and Modern Loss cofounder Rebecca Soffer wished she had after her parents died\, offering a welcoming space in which to grow thoughts and feelings as they evolve and create a personal roadmap toward resilience. With warmth\, wit and disarming humor\, Rebecca and the rabbis will unpack the wisdom of the book and discuss how the long arc of loss can be woven into our lives in a way that is practical\, creative\, comforting\, provoking\, and\, finally\, hopeful. You can purchase your own copy of The Modern Loss Handbook via Amazon here (www.amazon.com/dp/0762474815). \nThis event is intended for adults and will include a conversation with Rebecca Soffer\, moderated by Rabbis Jennifer Kaluzny and Michael Moskowitz\, followed by strolling refreshments. Due to the generosity of donors\, there is no charge to attend\, but advance registration is required. Please RSVP by Friday\, April 5th.

SUMMARY:Natural Born Leaders with Dr. Michelle Hammond
DESCRIPTION:Jewish tradition calls on each of us to be a leader. But for some of us\, taking on a leadership role is easier said than done. Why? Join the Maimonides Society as we welcome Dr. Michelle Hammond\, Associate Professor of Management at Oakland University. Dr. Hammond will address the idea of natural born leaders and how we\, physicians\, see ourselves as leaders and how we can lead outside our positions. She will give us some insight on how to focus on integrating “physician” and “leader” identities at any stage of one’s career and how that leadership identity can translate outside of our formal leadership positions into professional networks within our Jewish community. \n$50 includes program\, heavy appetizers and cocktails. \nPlease register in advance by April 2. \nThis event is intended for physicians and their spouses. \nThank you to our Leadership: \nJimmy Aronovitz & Mike Feld\, Maimonides Society Co-Chairs \nBill Goldstein\, Affinities Chair

SUMMARY:Judaism and Magic: Amulets\, and Demons\, and Incantation Bowls OH MY!
DESCRIPTION:Throughout time\, Jews have been magic practitioners. We find magic interwoven in the mezuzah that hangs on the doorposts of our house\, in the spices we smell during havdalah\, in the lulav we shake to bring on the rain. \nWhile Patriarchy has long obscured much of ancient and old Jewish rites associated with magic of the everyday\, a thread of resistance has always woven through. Together we will explore different ways magic shows up in our tradition in the form of amulets\, incantation bowls\, Jewish astrology\, and so much more. This class is for you if you are excited to explore and try out some of these less well known elements of the Jewish tradition. \nSessions will be held on April 10\, 17\, 24\, May 1 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Weitzman. We will also have a special final session at Molly’s house for Havdallah on May 11th. We will also have a culminating magical Shabbat dinner experience on May 10th. Cost is $36 for the series with no one turned away for lack of funds. \n________________________________ \nTribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. SUMMARY:Volunteer with DC Central Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Each year at the Passover seder\, we read aloud\, Kol dichfin yay-tay v’yay-chol (Let all who are hungry come and eat). As we prepare for eight days of forgoing chametz (foods with leaven) to symbolically represent our past oppression\, we’re also reminded that there are those in our city who still struggle with food insecurity. \nVolunteer for a food prep shift with DC Central Kitchen and support its mission to combat hunger in our city by bringing nutritious meals where they’re needed most. Advance registration is required and spots are limited\, so please only sign up if you are able to attend for the duration of the volunteer shift.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Fiddle Summit
DESCRIPTION:Deep fiddle traditions from New York City! \nBlack String Band legends The Ebony Hillbillies\, and rising Klezmer star Zoë Aqua bring the noise and the sweetness for a night of virtuosity\, joy and unstoppable dance party energy. \nThe fiddle is a common denominator to two major musical traditions in New York City: the Jewish Klezmer style and African American folk music. On April 11\, come celebrate the instrument and the Brooklyn communities it represents. \nThe Brooklyn Fiddle Summit is curated by Jeremiah Lockwood and presented by The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life. \nAbout the performers: \nTHE EBONY HILLBILLIES started out as an NYC street corner phenomenon\, but their vibe and influence has extended over the years to acclaimed live performances at legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; appearances on the BBC\, Good Morning America\, NBC\, CBS\, etc.\, international music workshops and festivals\, visual artist collaborations at museums (including The Whitney with phenom Kara Walker and The Smithsonian Museum)\, guest school programs\, foot stomping and hand-clapping dance parties and more. While formed in the digital era\, they have sold thousands of hard copies of their four CDs – Sabrina’s Holiday (2004)\, I Thought You Knew (2005)\, Barefoot and Flying (2005) and Slappin’ A Rabbit – Live! (2015) – at their shows and via their globally popular website. The Ebony Hillbillies are currently in the studio working on their next project. \nZOË AQUA is a fiddler\, teacher\, and composer\, who has recently returned from a 2-year stint studying Transylvanian folk music on a Fulbright grant in Romania. She’s excited to share some of the raw\, rich and unpredictable tunes she learned from musicians there\, as well as her original compositions based on klezmer and Transylvanian music. She’ll be joined by Ira Temple (accordion) and Zoe Guigeno (bass)\, longtime collaborators of Zoë’s in the rad-trad band Tsibele and respected performer/composers in Brooklyn’s music scene.
