SUMMARY:Let Freedom Sing: Operas about Liberation
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco Opera’s Dramaturg Emeritus Kip Cranna will take us on a video journey (with English subtitles) exploring the many varied ways that operas have expressed in drama and song our basic human aspirations to be free. Musical examples will include the famous chorus “Va\, pensiero\,” the song of the Jewish people seeking freedom from bondage in Verdi’s opera Nabucco.  \nClifford (Kip) Cranna\, Dramaturg Emeritus of San Francisco Opera\, served on the staff for over forty years and was Director of Music Administration for over thirty years. In 2008 he was awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal\, the company’s highest honor\, and in 2012 he received the Bernard Osher Cultural Award for distinguished efforts to bring excellence to a cultural institution. In 2014 he received the Star of Excellence Award for outstanding service to the programs of the San Francisco Opera Guild. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Stanford University. For thirty years he was Program Editor and Lecturer for the Carmel Bach Festival. He lectures and writes frequently on music and teaches at the Fromm Institute at USF and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at U.C. Berkeley\, Dominican University\, and San Francisco State.

Let’s take a break from the hectic pace of the city and spend a few hours in tranquility\, taking in stunning views of the city while learning about the incredibly rich history of Roosevelt Island! \nI am excited to offer two meeting point options: \nOption 1: Meet the group in Manhattan at the Tramway Plaza at 1:40 pm sharp. We will meet in the plaza downstairs and head up to the tram as a group. The cost to take the tram is the same as a subway\, it is not included\, you will be responsible for your own tram fare. We will take the tram over to the Island as a group\, so please be on time! \nOption 2: Meet the group on the Island in front of the Visitor Center located at the Tramway Plaza on the Island at 2 pm sharp. \nThe tour will begin at the Visitor Center and end at Grannie Annie’s where we have a reservation to order food/drinks ala cart at the bar. No food or drinks are included in the event\, anything you purchase will be your financial responsibility. Yes\, I know 4/27 is during Passover\, the bar will have plenty of Passover-friendly options to order if you are keeping Passover. Welcome to ‘The Club’\n\n\nWelcome to Miami Sephardic Club’s third annual “Mimouna Party”! Our Mimouna has been Miami’s largest Jewish YP event for Passover for the last two years and this year’s event will be even larger. In fact\, this is the largest Mimouna in the United States. \nFor those who don’t know\, a Mimouna is a Moroccan tradition celebrated by Jews primarily in Morocco\, Israel\, France\, and other Moroccan and Algerian Jewish communities. The celebration begins after nightfall on the last day of Passover. Typically\, families open their homes to visitors and set out a lavish spread of holiday cakes and sweets. It is known to be a festive environment filled with good music and company. \nOur event will take place as soon as Passover ends (Tuesday\, Apr 30). There will be abundant drinks\, sweets\, muffalettas and other Moroccan deserts. We are bringing in a notable Moroccan DJ to get the vibe right. Plan to arrive at 9 pm and dress Moroccan Formal. This party will go on all night. \n \nEvent updates for 2024:\n \n\nWe are moving this event indoor this year – By popular demand\, this event will be indoor in an air conditioned space. Florida’s weather can be unpredictable\, especially during this time of year. It’s important for our guests to feel comfortable all night. Fortunately\, our location does not have a limitation on event end and noise levels so lets expect a long and exciting night!\n\n\nWe will keep the event space secret until day of event – Strictly for security purposes. Check your emails in the days leading up to event (in between chag) to know where to go. We’ll take the most strict security praucatuions to keep all guests safe.\nDress code is “Moroccan Formal” – Dress the part. Moroccan Formal is up to your interpretation. Be creative.
