SUMMARY:20's and 30's Grief Shabbat Dinner with Base LNCLN
DESCRIPTION:It’s not a club anyone wants to be a part of\, but if you are a person in their 20s or 30s who has lost a parent\, partner\, or sibling\, sometimes it’s good to be with people who get it. In partnership with JCFS\, this group meets monthly on zoom to share memories of our loved ones and discuss our experiences of grief in a supportive space. Our next meeting is December 20th at 8pm by zoom. Please dm Rav Sarah if you’d like to be added to our list.

SUMMARY:Pikuach Nefesh (Save a Life): Storytelling\, Jewish Values & Narcan Training featuring Joel Dworkin
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish principle of pikuach nefesh demands that we throw almost all rules aside in the pursuit of saving life\, and being trained to use Narcan to reverse an overdose can help you do just that! \nWe’ll hear from Joel Dworkin\, program manager and substance use recovery advocate\, about his personal journey with drug use and recovery in the Jewish community\, while connecting these ideas to Jewish values and the upcoming holiday of Purim. This session will include a formal nasal Narcan training for all attendees\, who will also receive a Narcan kit to take home. \nThis program is intented for college students and young adults\, approximately ages 18-40. Light Kosher refreshments will be served following the program. Due to the generosity of donors\, there is no charge to attend\, but advance registration is required. \nThis program is held in partnership with The Well\, Jewish Family Service\, Repair the World Detroit\, Hillel of Metro Detroit\, the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities\, Jewish Addiction Resource Alliance\, Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta\, HAMSA\, and the Daniel B. Sobel Friendship House. \nLearn more about Joel Dworkin: \nIn 2008\, Joel Dworkin entered an inpatient treatment center and then a wilderness therapy program for heroin addiction. It not only ended his drug use but fed his interest in working in the outdoor education and recovery fields. He worked at Camp Ramah of the Rockies for five years\, helping them start a program for campers to learn about addiction and recovery. That sparked a chance for him to help start BaMidbar Wilderness Therapy in Colorado\, a program for Jewish young adults struggling with mental health challenges. He continued to work with Jewish camps until moving to Chicago. While in Chicago he completed a long overdue bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Roosevelt University and worked as the Youth Programs Manager for Brooklyn Boulders climbing gym. He currently manages HAMSA (Helping Atlantans Manage Substance Abuse)\, which educates the greater Atlanta community about substance use disorder and harm reduction and provides support\, treatment resources\, and strategies for those seeking help and in recovery.

SUMMARY:Among Cossacks & Commissars: A History of Ukranian Jews
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating presentation journeys through three specific time periods related to Jews in the Ukraine. We’ll start with a discussion about the Kna’ani or pre-Ashkenazic Ukrainian Jewry in medieval times\, the Crusades and the beginning of mass migrations from Western Europe into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth\, which included Ukraine. We then focus on the Ukrainian shtetl\, the development of the Yiddish language\, Cossack massacres\, and chafing under the oppression of the czars. Moving into the 20th century\, we examine Jews and the Ukrainian War of Independence (1917-21)\, life under Stalin\, the Babi Yar Massacre during the Holocaust\, and Ukrainian Jewry before Putin’s invasion. \nEducator\, writer\, and Yiddish translator\, Ken Blady was born in Paris\, France\, and grew up in Chassidic Brooklyn\, where he attended yeshiva and rabbinical seminary. A San Francisco Bay Area resident since 1972\, Ken has a B.A. in History from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in Clinical Counseling from CSU\, East Bay. He is the author of “Jewish Communities in Exotic Places\,” and author\, editor\, and translator of seven published Yiddish works. A popular lecturer on a variety of Jewish themes Ken has been featured on many radio and TV talk shows and educational programs\, including the BBC\, The History Channel and the Voice of Israel. Ken has been offering lectures and classes on a variety of Jewish topics at the JCCSF for more than four decades.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn. A Druze Perspective with Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh
DESCRIPTION:What’s it like to be a Druze woman and a leader in Israeli society? How are Israeli Druze dealing with the complexities of their identity during the war against Hamas? \nFor more perspective join us for Lunch and Learn with Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh\, the Jewish Agency’s first Druze emissary to the United States. Gadeer was the first Druze woman to be elected to the Israeli Knesset\, and in 2017 broke yet another barrier by becoming the first non-Jewish anchorwoman in Israel to broadcast the evening news in Hebrew. We’ll hear about Gadeer’s amazing triumphs against remarkable odds\, her work to empower other women by creating opportunities for them to succeed\, and what being a Druze Israeli is like today. \nLunch will be provided. \nPresented in cooperation with the Jewish Agency For Israel.

SUMMARY:Teaching the Holocaust on Fortnite and Through Gaming Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Luc Bernard shares personal insights and global responses on how he is revolutionizing Holocaust education through virtual worlds and gamin\n\n\nDespite spending many millions of dollars on Holocaust museums and education\, statistics paint a dismal picture of what young people understand about the Nazis attempt to exterminate the Jews. Luc Bernard\, a noted game designer\, has taken a different approach. He created a video game aimed at portraying the Holocaust accurately\, titled The Light in the Darkness\, and on the Fortnite gaming platform\, he developed a virtual museum called Voices of the Forgotten that allows young people to learn about Holocaust in a familiar virtual environment. Bernard will be in conversation with AJU President Jeffrey Herbst about the opportunities the virtual world has to offer for Holocaust education\, how people across the world have responded to his digital creations\, and the opportunities and perils of “gamifying” the mass killing of Jews.

SUMMARY:ONE LIFE In-Person Screening
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented by Philadelphia Film Society and Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History \nDirected by James Hawes | Narrative Feature | UK | 2023 | 1 hr 50 min | English\, German\, Czech\, and French with English subtitles \nIn ONE LIFE\, Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn bring together the recognition Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton deserves\, portraying old and young versions of the humanitarian who assisted in the transportation of 669 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK. James Hawes’s powerhouse film chronicles Winton’s rapid trajectory from living as a stockbroker in the UK to joining his friends in Prague in an impulsive attempt to rescue refugees living under Hitler’s regime. With the help of his compassionate mother (Helena Bonham Carter)\, Winton and his team work through sweat and tears\, fundraising and resisting bureaucratic authority to complete their mission. Winton’s memories of his wartime efforts inundate his mind years later into his life\, eventually leading to his iconic appearance on BBC’s That’s Life programme. \nOfficial Selection of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival\, PJFM invites you to a film that pays tribute to a righteous yet modest hero of the Shoah\, a man whose bravery should stay forever preserved in history. \nTICKETS & INFO: https://phillyjfm.org/event/one-life/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2426276490891041/

SUMMARY:Gilda Radner: Contemporary Comedic Genius
DESCRIPTION:Gilda was the first cast member hired on Saturday Night Live\, and the only woman in the early days of the program who wrote scenes as a member of the writers’ group. She was the kid from Gross Point\, the one who insisted that SNL hire John Belushi\, and the one who could more than hold her own in scenes with the likes of Belushi\, Dan Akroyd\, Steve Martin\, and Bill Murray. This talk presents video scenes of her recurring characters\, each of them a unique creation reflecting different parts of American society. Revisit these portrayals along with the connective tissue provided by Martin’s narration. And let’s celebrate Women’s History month by honoring the memory of this creative genius. \nMartin Marshall has taught elements of his Contemporary Comedic Genius series at twelve OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) programs across the country over the past 10 years. Numbering more than 50 courses presented\, these programs cover 17 of the greatest comedic artists and groups of our lifetimes\, including Lenny Bruce\, George Carlin\, Richard Pryor\, Woody Allen\, Mel Brooks\, Jon Stewart\, Robin Williams\, and others. \nMartin is also a filmmaker\, poet\, actor\, director\, and producer. He learned his craft in the workshops of The Committee in Los Angeles and San Francisco\, as well as the workshop at Second City in Chicago. He founded People Theater in Los Angeles in 1970\, and co-founded Improvisation\, Inc.\, in San Francisco in 1972. Besides improvisational theater\, he has also directed a production of Geezer Theater\, an SF Mime-Troupe-style revue\, at OLLI San Francisco. He is well known as a slam and regular poet at venues throughout the Bay Area.
