SUMMARY:Teaching the Holocaust on Fortnite and Through Gaming Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Luc Bernard shares personal insights and global responses on how he is revolutionizing Holocaust education through virtual worlds and gamin\n\n\nDespite spending many millions of dollars on Holocaust museums and education\, statistics paint a dismal picture of what young people understand about the Nazis attempt to exterminate the Jews. Luc Bernard\, a noted game designer\, has taken a different approach. He created a video game aimed at portraying the Holocaust accurately\, titled The Light in the Darkness\, and on the Fortnite gaming platform\, he developed a virtual museum called Voices of the Forgotten that allows young people to learn about Holocaust in a familiar virtual environment. Bernard will be in conversation with AJU President Jeffrey Herbst about the opportunities the virtual world has to offer for Holocaust education\, how people across the world have responded to his digital creations\, and the opportunities and perils of “gamifying” the mass killing of Jews.

SUMMARY:ONE LIFE In-Person Screening
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented by Philadelphia Film Society and Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History \nDirected by James Hawes | Narrative Feature | UK | 2023 | 1 hr 50 min | English\, German\, Czech\, and French with English subtitles \nIn ONE LIFE\, Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn bring together the recognition Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton deserves\, portraying old and young versions of the humanitarian who assisted in the transportation of 669 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK. James Hawes’s powerhouse film chronicles Winton’s rapid trajectory from living as a stockbroker in the UK to joining his friends in Prague in an impulsive attempt to rescue refugees living under Hitler’s regime. With the help of his compassionate mother (Helena Bonham Carter)\, Winton and his team work through sweat and tears\, fundraising and resisting bureaucratic authority to complete their mission. Winton’s memories of his wartime efforts inundate his mind years later into his life\, eventually leading to his iconic appearance on BBC’s That’s Life programme. \nOfficial Selection of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival\, PJFM invites you to a film that pays tribute to a righteous yet modest hero of the Shoah\, a man whose bravery should stay forever preserved in history. \nTICKETS & INFO: https://phillyjfm.org/event/one-life/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2426276490891041/

SUMMARY:Gilda Radner: Contemporary Comedic Genius
DESCRIPTION:Gilda was the first cast member hired on Saturday Night Live\, and the only woman in the early days of the program who wrote scenes as a member of the writers’ group. She was the kid from Gross Point\, the one who insisted that SNL hire John Belushi\, and the one who could more than hold her own in scenes with the likes of Belushi\, Dan Akroyd\, Steve Martin\, and Bill Murray. This talk presents video scenes of her recurring characters\, each of them a unique creation reflecting different parts of American society. Revisit these portrayals along with the connective tissue provided by Martin’s narration. And let’s celebrate Women’s History month by honoring the memory of this creative genius. \nMartin Marshall has taught elements of his Contemporary Comedic Genius series at twelve OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) programs across the country over the past 10 years. Numbering more than 50 courses presented\, these programs cover 17 of the greatest comedic artists and groups of our lifetimes\, including Lenny Bruce\, George Carlin\, Richard Pryor\, Woody Allen\, Mel Brooks\, Jon Stewart\, Robin Williams\, and others. \nMartin is also a filmmaker\, poet\, actor\, director\, and producer. He learned his craft in the workshops of The Committee in Los Angeles and San Francisco\, as well as the workshop at Second City in Chicago. He founded People Theater in Los Angeles in 1970\, and co-founded Improvisation\, Inc.\, in San Francisco in 1972. Besides improvisational theater\, he has also directed a production of Geezer Theater\, an SF Mime-Troupe-style revue\, at OLLI San Francisco. He is well known as a slam and regular poet at venues throughout the Bay Area.
