SUMMARY:CMF & JSC Shabbat Dinner to support Soroka Medical Center
DESCRIPTION:CMF & JSC Shabbat Dinner for the Soroka Medical Center in Israel \nCMF x JSC have teamed up to organize a Shabbat dinner at Tribeca Synagouge. This dinner will serve as a fundraiser for a hospital in Israel\, as a large portion of your ticket will be donated to help the hospital. The hospital we decided to help is The Soroka Medical Center\, located in Be’er Sheva and treating hundreds of severely wounded. \nThe Shabbat Dinner is for young Jewish professionals in their 20s\, 30s\, and 40s. (Suggested age: 25-45). There will be an optional service beforehand. If you would like more details about the service\, please email: info@tribecasynagogue.org \nAmerican Friends of Soroka \nSoroka Medical Center is front and center in providing a medical response to the war. Soroka is a strategic asset for the IDF and closely coordinates with Israel’s military and civilian leadership to meet the developing needs in this crisis. Soroka has already treated over 700 patients\, approximately 130 of whom are in critical condition. For now\, the hospital has suspended elective procedures and treatments. Soroka’s dedicated staff is rendering life-saving care around the clock\, displaying unwavering resilience in the face of personal loss and fear. Your support is essential to helping Soroka meet this critical demand and to ensure the acquisition of essential medical equipment. \nAmerican Friends of Soroka Medical Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the outstanding medical care and breakthrough research at Soroka Medical Center\, the leading medical center in Israel and the only major hospital in southern Israel\, the country’s fastest-growing and most diverse region. Read more about them here –> https://www.soroka.org/about-us/ \nCall Me Friday ( CMF ) \nMichael and Julia started “Call Me Friday” or “CMF” as a way to stay connected to Young Jewish Professionals (YJPs) in New York City. In early 2019\, Mike and Julia attended a Shabbat dinner on the Upper West Side. They looked around the room and didn’t know a single person at the event. They said “Let’s change that.” In February 2019\, CMF was born as a WhatsApp group chat dedicated to sharing YJP events around the city. CMF has now grown to over 300 people solely through referrals and meeting new members in person. CMF is a way for YJPs to stay connected between the Shabbat dinners and holiday events. CMF is for friendships\, networking\, and even a CMF wedding (Julia met her husband\, David\, through the community)! CMF provides a medium for members to find a friend or a group of friends to attend Jewish events together. Our hope is that members won’t feel out of place like Mike and Julia felt at the Shabbat dinner on the Upper West Side. \nContact us at: callmefridaycmf@gmail.com\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/callmefridayCMF \nJewish Social Community ( JSC ) \nJSC is a community for young Jewish professionals (focused on 25-45 years old) that live/work/play in NYC area who want to connect with like-minded individuals through Jewish/social gatherings in and around the city. We focus on events that are targeted to people that are secular/conservative/reform. Our goal is to create an inclusive\, fun\, and safe space to coordinate and go to Jewish and related events that are relevant to our community. We have an 800+ (and growing!) WhatsApp Community including a collaborative event tracker and interest/age specific sub-groups. \nLearn more about us here –> https://jewishsocial.nyc/about-us/\nor follow us on Instagram here –> https://www.instagram.com/nycjewishsocial/

SUMMARY:(In person and virtual) Shabbat Services with Special Guest Liev Schreiber
DESCRIPTION:AMERICAN VALUES\, JEWISH VALUES AND UKRAINE \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an in person and virtual event \nLiev Schreiber spent April 2022 in Przemyśl\, Poland\, slicing vegetables for vats of borscht and roasting a literal ton of brisket to feed Ukrainians fleeing the war. “Let all who are hungry come and eat\,” he posted on Instagram\, citing the obligation he learned from his Ukrainian grandfather. \nHe then made his way across the border into Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and listen to the Lviv Symphony Orchestra rehearse Mozart’s Requiem — at least when its members were not unloading the crates of food and medical supplies they stored where their audience used to sit. \nThat was the best Schreiber could do after he realized that he wasn’t brave enough to take to the battlefield and instead cofounded BlueCheck Ukraine\, which harnesses the generosity of donors by vetting and fast-tracking funds to charity organizations on the ground in Ukraine. \nMost people assume Schreiber’s activism was spurred by his Ukrainian lineage\, but he insists that his work instead reflects the best of his American values. “T[he] pure idea of democracy for me feels like it’s being challenged all around the world right now\,” he says\, and he cannot abide the prospect of “democracy losing out to an authoritarian regime as powerful and as wide-reaching as the Kremlin.” \nThe five-time Golden Globe and three-time Emmy nominee joins us during Friday Night worship services to speak about America’s stake in Ukraine’s victory. He will be joined by Michael Goldfarb\, another BlueCheck Ukraine cofounder. \nActor\, director and writer Liev Schreiber has appeared in more than a dozen films\, won a Tony award for his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross\, made his directorial debut with Everything Is Illuminated\, starred in Ray Donovan\, appeared as Otto Frank in the series A Small Light and plays Henry Kissinger in the 2023 film Golda. He is also ambassador of United24\, a fundraising platform for medical care in Ukraine. \nAn independent strategic and crisis communications consultant\, Michael Goldfarb served as the communications director for the US Section of Doctors Without Borders and has worked in active conflict zones and refugee camps from Afghanistan and Cameroon to South Yemen\, Haiti and beyond.

SUMMARY:From Nowogrodek to NY City and Beyond: The Music and History of Klezmer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating journey through the history of Klezmer.\n\n\nThe word “klezmer” comes from Hebrew “kli zemer” which means “instrument of the singing”. Over time it came to signify the musicians themselves\, and in current usage it also refers to the musical genre of East European Jewish dance music. \nThis lecture will look at the development of klezmer from medieval times through the 20th century\, with the inclusion of photos\, video and musical examples (some from Yale Strom himself). Many of the locations that will be discussed have been personally visited by Strom\, who has done ethnographic research there. \n\n\n\nAbout Yale \nYale Strom is a professor in the Music Dept.at San Diego State University. Prior to this he taught at New York University. Yale is also one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Roma music and history. He has conducted extensive ethnographic research throughout Eastern Europe and the Balkans since 1981. He has made nine documentary films\, written fourteen books\, has had numerous photo-exhibitions throughout the world and with his band Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi has made fifteen recordings. They run the gamut from traditional klezmer to “new” Jewish jazz. His band is on the ARC-UK label. Strom has also composed for theater\, film\, radio\, television\, symphony orchestras and various artists such as Rachel Barton Pine\, Sara Caswell\, Salman Ahmad and many others. His latest documentary film is “American Socialist: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs”. His newest music recording is Yale Strom’s Broken Consort: Shimmering Lights\, and his latest audio drama (audible.com) is “Debs in Canton.”

SUMMARY:Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Humanitarian Relief Fundraising Event featuring the Shul Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Please join Hadassah Chicago-North Shore for a humanitarian event raising much-needed funds for Hadassah’s hospitals and youth villages in Israel. Hadassah’s hospitals are caring for the most critically wounded patients of the Israel War. We hope you will join us for an evening of beautiful songs from the Shul Sisters in support of Hadassah. \nThe shared desire to use music to lift women’s voices brought together acclaimed Cantors Laurie Akers (Congregation Or Shalom in suburban Chicago)\, Rachel Brook (Anshe Emet Synagogue\, Chicago\, IL)\, and Rachel Goldman (Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston\, TX) as the Shul Sisters. The Shul Sisters\, the first female cantorial trio in the US\, have been collaborating since January 2019. With the fundamental belief that joining together in song reminds us of our inherent worth and beauty\, the Shul Sisters continue to inspire people across the globe. \nQuestions? Contact cns@hadassah.org or 847.205.1900. \n$118 In-Person Event Fee | $54 Virtual Event Fee | $25 Student Event Fee (30 tickets available). Register by November 9 here: www.events.hadassah.org/CNSrelief \n*All attendees will be required to sign a Hadassah Event Participant Release to attend this event.
