SUMMARY:The World Goes to the Polls: The Economist on Elections in 2024
DESCRIPTION:More than 70 countries are holding elections this year\, representing half the world’s population. What do the results reveal about the state of democracy in 2024? Can far-right parties be countered\, as in France? And as America prepares to vote\, what could the outcome mean for the world? \nZanny Minton Beddoes\, The Economist’s editor-in-chief\, will explore the consequences of the year’s major elections—from America to India\, France\, Venezuela and beyond—with senior correspondents from The Economist including Washington bureau chief Idrees Kahloon\, Paris bureau chief Sophie Pedder\, and geopolitics editor David Rennie\, followed by audience Q&A. \nwith The Economist \nZanny Minton Beddoes\, editor-in-chief of The Economist. Prior to this role\, she was the economics editor\, overseeing The Economist’s global economics coverage. Ms Minton Beddoes has written extensively about international financial issues\, including the enlargement of the European Union\, the future of the International Monetary Fund and economic reform in emerging economies. \nIdrees Kahloon\, Washington bureau chief\, leads The Economist’s coverage of the White House\, Congress and national politics. Prior to that\, he was the Washington correspondent and focused on policy matters. He began at The Economist as a data journalist in London. He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in applied mathematics and economics. \nSophie Pedder\, Paris bureau chief\, covers French politics and economics. She joined The Economist in 1990 and has reported on Britain\, European politics\, the media industry\, and the end of apartheid in South Africa as the Johannesburg correspondent in the 1990s. Earlier\, she was a research assistant for William Julius Wilson at the University of Chicago’s Urban Poverty and Family Life project. She is the author of “Revolution Française: Emmanuel Macron and the Quest to Reinvent a Nation” (Bloomsbury\, 2018)\, and “Le déni français” (JC Lattès\, 2012). A graduate of Oxford University and the University of Chicago\, she won the David Watt journalism prize in 2006. \nDavid Rennie\, Geopolitics editor\, writes about geopolitics and co-hosts the Drum Tower podcast on China. Since he joined The Economist in 2007\, he has worked as a columnist in Brussels\, London\, Washington and Beijing\, where he was bureau chief from 2018 to 2024. Previously\, he was a foreign correspondent for the Daily Telegraph\, a contributing editor of the Spectator magazine and a reporter for the Evening Standard. He has won several awards\, most recently the 2023 Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia\, shared with his Drum Tower co-host\, Sue-Lin Wong. \nPrivacy Policy\nBy registering for this program\, you agree to have your personal information\, including your name and email address\, shared with both The Economist and Sixth & I for the purpose of providing registrants with important event details and future communications. Please review The Economist’s privacy policy here and Sixth & I’s privacy policy here for more information on how your data will be handled.

SUMMARY:OBSERVANT
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Weiler Grayson’s New Play OBSERVANT to Headline Spark Theatre Festival NYC \nLimited Engagement runs September 12 – 28 at The Chain Theatre \nHow can we repair the world if we don’t repair ourselves? \nIn OBSERVANT\, three generations of women confront their relationships to their Jewish identities—and to each other. Comedy and tragedy entwine\, like a braided challah\, when a mass shooting in their community tests the bonds of faith and family. OBSERVANT will headline Emerging Artists Theatre’s Spark Theatre Festival NYC. Written by Pamela Weiler Grayson. \nOne of the themes that runs throughout the play is how to come to terms with and try to improve a violent and chaotic world\, when we can’t even seem to get along with our own families or communities\, or reconcile our own internal conflicts. The Jewish custom of  “Tikkun Olam\,” which translates into “repair the world” or “mend the world\,” reflects this deeply-held desire to make the world a better place\, even while we struggle with hatred and extreme tribalism. A very timely theme in our current global and national climate. \nWritten by Pamela Weiler Grayson \nDirected by Shellen Lubin \nProduced by Red Lyric Productions in Association with Adam Weinstock and Emerging Artists Theatre. \nThe cast features Yair Ben-Dor\, Arielle Flax\, Rebecca Hoodwin\, Arielle Beth Klein\,  and Melissa Wolff. \nThe creative and production team includes scenic design by Colleen Shea\, lighting design by David Castaneda\, sound design by Grady Gund\, and costume coordinator Sophia Dorio. \nPerformance schedule: \nThursday\, September 12 at 7pm \nSaturday\, September 14 at 7pm \nMonday\, September\, 16 at 7pm \nWednesday\, September 18 at 2pm \nThursday\, September 19 at 7pm \nSunday\, September 22 at 2pm \nTuesday\, September 24 at 7pm \nThursday\, September 26 at 7pm \nSaturday\, September 28 at 7pm
