SUMMARY:Pre-Rosh Hashanah Piyyut Prep @ Harlem Moho
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for Rosh Hashanah by diving into the lyrical beauty of the centuries-old piyyut (liturgical poem) Ahot K’tanah\, composed by the 13th Sephardic poet Abraham Ḥazan di Gerona\, traditionally recited at the commencement of Rosh Hashanah by Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities. The poem\, whose name means Little Sister in Hebrew\, symbolizes the Jewish people as a young woman who remains faithful to her heavenly lover despite the suffering she endures. The piyyut’s refrain\, tichleh shanah v’kililotehah (may the year-and her woes- come to end) is particularly resonant this year. \nWe’ll read the poem in Hebrew and in its English translation and listen to beautiful recordings of the poem being recited according to the musical traditions of the Jewish communities of Italy and Aleppo\, Syria. \nHoney cookies and drinks will be served.

SUMMARY:Rosh HaHaNah Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:Start the new Jewish year on a high with comedy! Rosh HaHaNah is a fun show for all featuring Jewish comedians. Laugh about our shared Jewish experience and life in general with diverse comedians and get ready for a few sweet (and sinful) surprises! \nThis show is produced by artist and comedian Danielle Brody of @JewsinDoodles. All attendees will receive the Jews in Doodles 5785 magnet calendar that includes all American and Jewish holidays. \nLineup: \nMark Henely: Mark is a Jewish Comedian based in Jersey City. His Bar Mitzvah was superhero-themed. He has performed at comedy clubs all over the USA. He has completed 3 runs of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Follow him here.\nRachel Lander: As a 6-foot-tall\, NYC-native\, Rachel draws her material upon the absurdity from her life as a Jewish software engineer living in Brooklyn. After going to college for math and visual arts\, Rachel decided to go out on a whim and pursue standup comedy. She has been featured in the NYTimes\, a brief clip on Comedy Central\, and most recently on wired. You can catch her at the show she runs called Brooklyn underground comedy or at most clubs / bars in the city! Follow her here. \nSean Leviashvili: Sean is a producer and performer who also created Menschions alongside his partner Rebecca Schwitz. You may know him from some of the holiday parodies created through Menschions including the “Vogue – Hanukkah Edition” and “Dysfunctional Dayenu.” He performs around the city and is participating in this year’s Queer Comedy Festival here in New York City. Follow him here.\nHannah Lieberman: Hannah is\, by all accounts\, a nerd: from her lifelong love of classical music to her national tournament scrabble ranking\, to her insatiable appetite for all things Jane Austen She enjoys bringing this unbridled enthusiasm to all parts of her life\, including to her deep passions for comedy and theatre. What she sometimes lacks in street sense\, this adork-able Southern redhead makes up for in bubbly energy and a commitment to having fun through her art. Follow her here.\nShahak Shapira: Shahak is an Israel-born\, Berlin-based comedian. His comedy show on German TV got canceled so fast\, most people didn’t even notice he had one. Shahak has successfully bullshitted audiences around the world into thinking he’s funny and even tricked world-class comedians like Jim Gaffigan\, Iliza\, Maz Jobrani\, Ari Shaffir\, and Joe List into letting him open for them – ha! Fools! By making up a bunch of credits\, he was also able to stain the legendary stages of the Comedy Store\, Gotham\, Laugh Factory\, Comedy Mothership\, Top Secret London\, The Stand and New York Comedy Club with mediocre-at-best comedy. Follow him here.\nDana Siegelstein: Dana is a Jersey-bred\, New York-based comedian. She is Jew-ish and proud of it! She also has a podcast called “Not That Deep”\, give it a listen wherever you listen to your podcasts! Follow her here.\nChris Warren: Chris is a New England-based comedian and host of the “You Should Be Worried” podcast. He performs all over the Northeast tackling the topics of mental health and sobriety. He has just returned from his run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Follow him here.\nHost\, Danielle Brody: Danielle is a producer and performer who uses cartoons and stand-up comedy to share hilarious true stories inspired by her life and culture. She has performed comedy and her Mitzvah or Shandah show on stages and synagogues in NYC\, the Catskills\, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She also creates Jewish products\, videos\, and events. Follow her here. \n—————– \nThe Grisly Pear Midtown is the newest upscale addition to the Pear family! The club features an insider look at the best NYC has to offer just steps from Times Square. Expect comedians you’ve seen on HBO\, Comedy Central\, Netflix\, Late Night TV\, and more\, plus the hottest rising comedians on the scene. \nPast comedians include Ari Shaffir\, Mark Normand\, Stavros Halkias\, Chanel Ali\, Emma Willman\, Ian Fidance\, Derek Gaines\, Tony Woods\, Marcus Monroe\, Isabel Hagen\, Nathan Macintosh\, Jay Jurden\, Caitlin Peluffo\, Eva Evans\, Geoffrey Asmus\, Eagle Witt\, Gina Brillon\, Dan St. Germain\, Mike Cannon\, Vannessa Jackson\, Sergio Chicon\, Gianmarco Soresei\, Joe DeVito\, Brendan Sagalow\, Carmen Lagala\, Che Durena\, Alex Carabaño\, LeClerc Andre\, Chloe Radcliffe\, Aaron Berg and more. \nThe Grisly Pear Midtown features a full kitchen serving a Mexican-inspired bar menu\, including tacos\, burgers\, and fresh donuts. Additionally the bar has everything from classic beers to our signature cocktail\, the Fiery Scotsman. Each show requires a two item minimum purchase in addition to your ticket\, or you can skip the show and dine without a ticket in our restaurant area.

SUMMARY:Voices That Wander
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of beautiful vocal music as we celebrate traditional songs from the Mizrahi and Sephardi Jewish diasporas\, debut new music inspired by traditional songs in the Judeo-Spanish language of Ladino\, and learn about rich cultural traditions and experiences of Ladino-speaking Jews throughout the diaspora. \nVoices That Wander is a choral project which explores traditional songs in Ladino\, the language of Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews who fled the inquisitions. The Wing-It Singers choir will perform new arrangements of traditional Ladino songs by Sally Davies\, and brand new choral compositions by composer Lydia Samuels. Joining the choir are guest soloists Ana Silvera\, Miriam Gould\, David Ridley and Rosalie Warner. \nVanessa Paloma Elbaz\, a Moroccan Jewish singer\, scholar and expert in the music of the diasporic regions of 1492’s expulsion\, will be sharing her knowledge of Ladino women’s songs through a dynamic fusion of music\, visuals\, and storytelling. \nSinger and composer Ana Silvera\, who fuses the traditional music of her own lineage with a contemporary sound\, will share Ladino traditional songs in a solo performance. \nJoining us will be oral historian Dr Bea Lewkowicz\, director of Sephardi Voices UK\, who will be in conversation with Lebanese born visual artist Leslie Hakim-Dowek. Leslie’s mother\, Rebecca Hakim Dowek\, was a Ladino speaker and who was interviewed for the Sephardi Voices UK archive. \nBea and Leslie will discuss the importance of Ladino\, Leslie’s journey from Beirut to London\, and a recent project which involves Ladino lullabyes and photographs of traces of Jewish lives in the Greek city of Thessaloniki.

We also welcome sponsors to help cover the cost to make services possible for all of us\, including those who are unable to pay the suggested donation. \n*Kehillat Harlem strives to make each person feel at home in our prayer space by upholding our commitment to halachah (Jewish law) while working hard to hold our commitments to maximum inclusivity. Our tefillot (prayer services) are liturgically traditional and there is a mehitza (separation between genders) while davening. Daveners (those who pray) sit in the section with which they identify\, and we make space for anyone who identifies outside of the gender binary. Tefillot are male-led and Torah reading is open to community members of any gender identity to read.
