SUMMARY:FED Shabbat Dinner and Play Reading
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a festive\, home-cooked FED Shabbat Dinner plus excerpt from a play and Q&A with the playwright! \nWhat draws people to each other? Why do we love the people we love? What is a good marriage?\nIn “Roasted Sweet Potatoes\,” playwright Justine Borer explores how these questions play out in the Jewish community. Set in 1990s New Jersey\, it is the story of how twentysomething Dalia navigates romantic love in the context of her traditional Jewish parents’ complicated marriage.\nJustine is a professor at the City University of New York\, where she teaches law\, philosophy\, and writing\, and a Small Claims Court arbitrator. \nThe event will take place at the 14th St. Y in Manhattan.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Exploration Series: Cohort Opening Shabbat
DESCRIPTION:This event is an opening Shabbat dinner to kickoff our Shabbat Exploration Series cohort. If you register for this cohort\, no need to register for the individual Shabbat Exploration Series events! While the full series will include programs that anyone can “drop in” for\, the kickoff is exclusively for those who choose to be part of the cohort. See below for all the details! \nIf you are not joining the cohort but would still like to celebrate Shabbat that evening\, note that Tribe 12’s regular Monthly Shabbat Dinner is happening at the same time. \n  \n— \nShabbat is a day of rest\, joy\, and connection\, and there are many ways to experience it. Maybe you want a break from your phone for a day\, or even just for a few hours\, but that might feel lonely. Maybe you’ve been wanting to check out a synagogue in town\, but don’t want to go by yourself. Maybe you want to connect over a leisurely Shabbat lunch and songs with other people\, feeling like there’s nowhere you have to rush off to\, just being fully in the moment. \nThis is the inspiration for our Shabbat Exploration Series. Each month from January to June\, Jewish 20s and 30s will come together for a different Saturday morning Shabbat experience\, rotating between synagogue-based ones and home/nature-based ones. This is a chance to explore different ways of doing Shabbat to see what fits for you individually\, while also forming friendships with others who are doing the same. The experiences are open to people who currently have any level of Shabbat observance\, including zero experience\, and there is no end goal regarding how you observe. Tribe 12 Rabbinic Intern Adina Ikeman and Tribe 12 Director of Engagement(s) Danielle Selber will lead these experiences. \nYou can drop in to individual experiences or sign up to be part of the cohort (people who commit to the whole series). \nParticipation options:  \nDrop in to individual experiences: Just interested in one or two offerings? You can register for any individual experience on Tribe 12’s website just like any other program. \n\n$5 for synagogue-based experiences (includes a meal)\n$10 for home- or nature-based experiences (includes a meal)\n\nJoin the cohort: Want to enjoy the full arc of the program? Develop friendships with a cohort of participants who are also exploring what Shabbat means to them. Cohort members are welcome to attend all programming; if you need to miss something\, that is completely fine. \n\n$54 covers all Saturday morning experiences and two Shabbat dinners\nCohort members have the benefit of attending opening and closing Shabbat dinners with Danielle and Adina!\n\nSchedule: (subject to change and will be updated) \nSaturday\, January 31st: Potluck lunch and singing (Northwest location TBA)\nSaturday\, February 21st: Synagogue experience (Society Hill Synagogue service & kiddush lunch)\nSaturday\, March 21st: Shabbat lunch and walk (Wissahickon)\nSaturday\, April 11th: Synagogue experience (Center City location TBA)\nSaturday\, May 16th: Guided Shabbat hike (Northwest location TBA)\nSaturday\, June 6th: Synagogue experience (Center City location TBA) \nFriday\, January 16th: Opening Shabbat for cohort members (Old City as part of Tribe 12’s monthly Shabbat)\nFriday\, May 29th: Closing Shabbat for cohort members (Location TBA) \n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Always Carry Salt: Author Talk with Samantha Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Playwright-journalist Samantha Ellis presents her new memoir about resilience\, language\, and the healing power of our ancestor’s recipes.\n\n\n\nSamantha Ellis presents Always Carry Salt: A Memoir of Preserving Language and Culture\nIn partnership with The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life \nPlaywright and journalist Samantha Ellis presents her new book Always Carry Salt\, a life-affirming memoir about resilience\, language\, and the healing power of our ancestor’s music\, stories\, and recipes. The daughter of Iraqi-Jewish refugees\, Samantha grew up surrounded by the noisy\, vivid\, hot sounds of Judeo-Iraqi Arabic—a language that’s now on the verge of extinction. The realization that she won’t be able to tell her son he’s “living in the days of the aubergines” or reminding him to “always carry salt” opens the floodgates. How can she pass on this heritage without passing on the trauma of displacement? Will her son ever love mango pickle? A moving meditation on the words and traditions that shape us\, in Always Carry Salt\, Samantha not only considers what we lose and keep\, she also asks what we might need to let go of to preserve our culture and ourselves. Ellis discusses her search for answers at Greenlight\, before an audience Q&A and signing.

SUMMARY:Singles Millennial Quizzo
DESCRIPTION:Calling all elder millennials\, cuspers\, latchkey kids… basically\, anyone who remembers blowing into a Nintendo cartridge. Join us for a night of nostalgia-packed quizzo where the questions span everything from AIM to Backstreet Boys to the shared trauma of Y2K prep! \nThis event is for singles who could call themselves millennials (so roughly folks in their 30s)\, making both the references and the dating-age-appropriateness perfectly aligned. With that in mind\, we’ll create teams based on who we think you would want to meet! There are three easy ways to give us the info we need: schedule a free intake conversation with a Tribe 12 matchmaker\, fill out a quick profile\, or email danielle@tribe12.org with a few details about yourself. If you have already done any one of these things\, no action is needed! \nOur quizmaster is Tribe 12’s own Brett Richman who leads the Tribe 12 Fellowship (which you should totally check out if you are interested in professional mentorship or help with your career!)\, assisted by our lead matchmaker Danielle Selber. \n$10 in advance / $20 day of and at the door. Enjoy dinner and drinks along with trivia! \nWant to get in the spirit early? Add your favorite throwbacks and go-to bops to our collaborative Spotify playlist (sorry\, Napster was down) which will serve as the soundtrack for the night. \nTribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. We welcome people who identify as Jewish\, whose partner is Jewish\, or who are exploring Judaism. If you require any accommodations in order to fully participate in our programming\, please see our page on accommodations. If you require any financial assistance to participate\, contact us at info@tribe12.org.
