SUMMARY:Single & Spontaneous Improv Workshop
DESCRIPTION:*So* many first dates come out of this sold-out event last year that we had to bring it back! \nWant to make new connections and have a blast along the way? We’re partnering with our friends at Crossroads Comedy Theater for an improv workshop designed for Philly’s Jewish singles in their 20s and 30s who are looking to meet people in a fun yet structured atmosphere. \nLed by Crossroads instructor Rachel Semigran\, this experience combines real improv training with playful\, interactive games. You’ll learn to let go of inhibitions\, trust your instincts\, and communicate authentically with others. A perfect environment to make genuine connections! Enjoy snacks and non-alcoholic drinks before and after the activities. \nThis event is designed for total beginners to improv\, though of course those with experience are welcome to attend. Not sure if it’s your thing? We’re willing to bet the best relationships are built on spontaneity\, laughter\, and a little bit of courage\, so how about you come anyway 🙂 \nAbout Crossroads Comedy Theater: Crossroads Comedy Theater is a nonprofit company committed to providing people ways to explore their creativity\, build valuable life and business skills\, and have a “third place” that allows them to learn and have fun in a positive and supportive environment. They have trained hundreds of Philly area people in improv\, comedy writing\, stand-up\, storytelling\, and clowning. Through their student aid program\, pay what you can events\, community partnerships\, and other efforts\, they strive to lower the barrier to entry so that all can enjoy the power and fun of arts education and entertainment. SUMMARY:Free Film Screening of "The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue"
DESCRIPTION:In a harrowing real-life story\, the documentary “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue” follows retired Israeli general Noam Tibon\, who on October 7\, 2023\, received a desperate text from his son: terrorists had stormed his home\, and he\, his wife\, and their two young daughters feared for their lives. With no time to spare\, Noam and his wife\, Gali\, embarked on a ten-hour mission across a country under siege to save their family. \nRelying only on his instincts and military training\, Noam navigated ambushes\, roadblocks\, and a collapsing security system in a relentless race against time. Directed by acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich\, the film retraces every step of that day\, blending intimate firsthand testimony with the raw urgency of a survival thriller. \nRSVP here https://www.mishkon.org/event/film-screening—the-road-between-us-the-ultimate-rescue.html \nPopcorn and drinks will be provided. Security will be checking bags at the entrance.

SUMMARY:GLOE at Theater J: An Enemy of the People
DESCRIPTION:Mimosa reception: 12:45 PM | Play: 2:00 PM \nJoin GLOE for a mimosa matinee reception before Theater J’s production of An Enemy of the People\, written by Henrik Ibsen and newly adapted by Amy Herzog. Each ticket holder will get light brunch refreshment\, including coffee and bagels\, and mimosas. \nGet your ticket to the play here and make sure to use code MIMOSA to let us know you’re coming. \nAbout the Play:An Enemy of the People follows a small-town doctor who considers himself a proud\, upstanding member of his close-knit community. When he discovers the town’s water supply is polluted\, an issue that risks the lives of all citizens\, he raises the alarm. But he is shaken to his core when those in power\, including his own brother\, try not only to silence him\, but to destroy him. \nDrama Desk Award winner for Outstanding Adaptation and recent Broadway sensation\, Amy Herzog’s work unearths the relevance of Ibsen’s tale for our time\, weighing the cost of standing up to power when pressured into silence. Ibsen’s tale highlights the reverberating power of citizens who go against the status quo to do what’s right by their community.

DESCRIPTION:“Who is rich? One who is happy with what they have.” This teaching from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Ancestors) encourages us to always be grateful for life’s blessings. And Thanksgiving time pushes it to the max! We’re delighted to gather with our Base UWS community ahead of Thanksgiving for this special Shabbat potluck dinner. \nWe’ll email you 5 days beforehand with what you can bring. Also\, please bring a canned food (or two\, or three) for our neighbors in need. \nLooking forward to a wonderful Shabbat of community and soul-enriching food. \nAccessibility: There are eight steps leading up to Base UWS. \nAddress given upon registration. Please contact Rabbi Danny (danny.stein@memglobal.org) with any questions. \n— \nWe kindly ask that you do not come to events if you are feeling ill. We currently do not require Covid testing or face masks; we have face masks available for those who want one.

SUMMARY:GLOE at JxJ: The Lavender Scare
DESCRIPTION:Join GLOE to attend the film The Lavender Scare\, the first documentary film to tell the story of an unrelenting campaign by the federal government in the 1950s to identify and fire all employees suspected of being homosexual. \nGet your ticket to the movie here and make sure to use promo code LAVENDER20 to get a 20% discount and to let us know you’re coming. \nAbout the Film:In 1953\, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service. In doing so\, he triggered the longest witch hunt in American history. Over the next four decades\, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. But the actions of the government had an unintended effect. They inadvertently helped ignite the gay rights movement. \nPost-Screening ConversationAfter the film\, stay for a discussion with novelist and critic Thomas Mallon and Matt Nosanchuk\, formerly of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education in the Biden-Harris administration. Conversation moderated by Dr. Sarah Leavitt\, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Capital Jewish Museum.
