Shalom Hartman Institute

The Shalom Hartman Institute is a leading research and educational center serving Israel and world Jewry, founded in 1976 by Rabbi David Hartman. Headquartered in Jerusalem with a North American headquarters in New York City, the Institute works to enrich the moral and spiritual life of Israel and the Jewish people, deepen the commitment to pluralism, enhance Israel’s Jewish and democratic character, and rebuild the covenant between Israel and the Jewish world.

Through its Kogod Research Center for Contemporary Jewish Thought, the Institute serves as a think tank generating ideas on contemporary issues of importance to Jewish life. It offers a wide range of programs including rabbinic leadership training, campus and student programs, a gap-year Hevruta program, the David Hartman Center for Intellectual Excellence, and regional hubs across North America that convene rabbis, educators, communal professionals, and lay leaders for text study and applied Jewish thought.

The Institute also runs programs for Israeli leaders, including a Beit Midrash for Israeli rabbis and programs on pluralistic Jewish-Israeli identity, as well as initiatives like the Muslim Leadership Initiative that foster interfaith and intergroup dialogue. With a community of scholars and educators from across the religious and political spectrum, Hartman produces widely used podcasts, publications, and educational curricula distributed to Jewish communities worldwide.
