About Charles E. Smith Life Communities
Charles E. Smith Life Communities (CESLC) is a nonprofit senior living organization in Rockville, Maryland, tracing its roots to 1910 when a small group of Jewish community members began caring for aging members in need of housing and support, formally establishing the Hebrew Home for the Aged in 1916. Today, CESLC brings together six senior living options on a 38-acre campus, including independent living, affordable independent living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing care.
CESLC is committed to fulfilling Jewish values by honoring older adults and ensuring the dignity of each individual, while remaining open to people of all backgrounds. The organization is founded upon the values of tzedek (justice), chesed (kindness), kavod (respect) and hiddur (beautification), guiding its approach to independent and assisted living for seniors seeking community or additional support.
With a legacy spanning more than a century, CESLC serves over 1,100 older adults daily through its residences, home care services (SmithLife Homecare), and the Hirsh Health Center, providing a full continuum of care and social/educational opportunities for Jewish and non-Jewish seniors alike in the greater Washington, D.C. area.
