FED Jewish Peoplehood Shabbat

Hosted by
FED SocialJoin us for a delicious FED Shabbat Dinner, meaningful conversations, and beautiful melodies!
You may be familiar with Arthur Aron’s 36 questions that lead to love, from the NYTimes Modern Love column. But did you know there are questions that can lead to Jewish Peoplehood?
Thanks to the work of Rabbi Jeni S. Friedman, CEO of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, now you can participate yourself in this experiment to unlock the power of Jewish Peoplehood.
Come prepared to speak (and listen) from the heart about your Jewish traditions, experiences, and identity, and to find new meaningful connections.
Following this, musician Ira Klein will lead us in nigunim. Nigunim are traditional Jewish wordless melodies that are easily accessible, and do not require musical experience. Through repetition and variation, these melodies create a magical atmosphere. Let’s have fun and build community while making music!
With thanks to our host, JCC Harlem.
Good Jewdy: Tu Bishvat, A Fruity Jewish Variety Show
Hosted by
Brooklyn’s queer nightlife is blossoming for Tu Bishvat, the Jewish New Year for the Trees, and Good Jewdy is here to harvest a night of drag, ritual, and radical joy.
Returning to C’mon Everybody, this variety show blends drag, music, live art, and Jewish tradition through a campy, unapologetically queer lens. Produced and hosted by Brooklyn-based drag artist Harsh Babe, alongside Chava Goodtime, Good Jewdy is part of an ongoing series centering how queer Jews are reclaiming minor Jewish holidays, many historically tied to Israel, through an explicitly anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian foundation.
Featuring: Ella Yurman (Going Down TV), Julian Shapiro-Barnum (Recess Therapy, Celebrity Substitute) leading a Jewish trivia game show, Una Osato (Jewish Voice for Peace), Jenny Romaine (Jews For Racial & Economic Justice), live illustration by Molly Crabapple, a musical comedy act by Esther Fallick of Vulture’s Comics You Should Know for 2025, drag performances by Alvah Klempt and Julius Nicoy, and a closing archival Yiddish techno set by Chaia.
This edition also features an exciting, fundraiser raffle! You’ll have a chance to win a bedazzled kippah, a gift card from Edith’s BK, a bag for schlepping by Susan Alexandra, and more seasonal surprises. All proceeds support the United States Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) and the replanting of olive trees in Palestine 🌿.
Date: Sunday, February 1, 2026 | doors at 7, shows at 8 PM ET
Location: C’mon Everybody (325 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn)

Virtual Book Talk: The Extraordinary Story of “Hester Street”

Hosted by
Museum at Eldridge StreetJoin author Dr. Julia Wagner on Sunday, February 8th at 2pm Eastern Time on Zoom to discuss her new book, Hester Street (BFI Film Classics/Bloomsbury 2025), the first book to focus exclusively on Joan Micklin Silver’s films.
Joan Micklin Silver’s 1975 debut feature film, Hester Street, changed the face of Jewish American cinema and forged a path for women in the industry. Marking the film’s 50th anniversary, Dr. Wagner will explore how this trailblazing Yiddish, feminist film defied expectations and became an international hit that still delights all these years later.
Hester Street evokes the immigrant experience through the character Gitl (Carol Kane, whose performance earned her an Academy Award nomination), as she steps off the boat from Eastern Europe and into the heart of New York’s Lower East Side in 1896. Reunited with her assimilated husband, Gitl must adjust to American life and negotiate how much of the old world she can bring into the new.
Julia’s talk will uncover the fascinatingly rich layers of Yiddish culture in the narrative and will bring vital new insights to an under-appreciated landmark film.

Interfaith Social Justice Book Club: Still Born

Hosted by
Aviv 20s and 30s at B’nai JeshurunDive into powerful literature alongside community members of B’nai Jeshurun and St. Paul & St. Andrew, as we join together in exploring books that amplify social justice themes. Each month, we’ll gather together in person to reflect on and discuss our monthly read. We’ll read both fiction and nonfiction works that wrestle with the intersecting injustices we collectively face.
This month we’re reading *Still Born* by Guadalupe Nettel, translated by Rosalind Harvey. *Still Born* is the story of two independent and career-driven women in their mid-thirties, neither of whom have built their future around the prospect of a family. One has taken the drastic decision to be sterilised, but as time goes by the other becomes drawn to the idea of becoming a mother.
Virtual Seminar with Dr. Susan Ackerman: Pregnancy & Childbirth Rituals in Ancient Israel

Hosted by
Museum at Eldridge StreetIn conjunction with the Museum at Eldridge Street’s current exhibition, First Light: Birth in the Jewish Tradition, join Professor Emerita of Religion at Dartmouth College, Susan Ackerman, on Zoom as we explore pregnancy and childbirth rituals in ancient Israel.
While there are not many passages in the Bible that shed light on pregnancy and childbirth rituals in ancient Israel, looking elsewhere in the ancient world, especially to the cultures of Hatti, Mesopotamia, and Egypt, can help us identify possible rituals that Israelite women may have used during pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
Join Dr. Ackerman on February 11th at 6pm Eastern Time as she traces the experience of the ancient world’s mothers-to-be from conception, through pregnancy, to delivery. She will also provide evidence regarding ancient Israelite mothers’ ritual activities, such as consulting oracles, using protective amulets and anointing oil, knot-magic rituals, reciting incantations, and bathing newborns.
