Ushpizin: Guest and Ghost
ABOUT THIS EVENT
For the first night of Sukkot in The Neighborhood, artist Gili Avissar will activate his Sukkah installation, Ushpizin: Guest and Ghost. This gathering will take place inside of the Sukkah, featuring a live performance, artist talk, and breaking of bread.
Ushpizin: Guest and Ghost is a temporary, outdoor, site-specific dwelling structure. This particular Sukkah is constructed using transformed flags originally constructed by Avissar to be flown in the old city of Jerusalem as part of the Mekudeshet Festival in 2017. These striking, vibrant textiles weave together the visual language of many cultures, while seeking to abstract the concept of nationality and represent all of the many groups who make a home beneath the shadow of these flags.
This event will take place as part of Sukkot in The Neighborhood – a festival of Jewish arts, culture, and spirituality taking place in an art installation Sukkah in Brooklyn.
