About American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian nonprofit organization that prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies. Founded by Clara Barton in 1881, it shelters, feeds, and provides comfort to people affected by disasters, supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood, teaches lifesaving skills, and supports veterans, military members, and their families.

As part of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the organization also distributes international humanitarian aid and responds to crises around the world. Its work is carried out through a national network of local chapters and regions, powered largely by volunteers and donations from the American public.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the American Red Cross partners with businesses, government agencies, and community organizations nationwide to deliver disaster response, blood services, training and certification courses, and international services.
