About Base LA
Base LA is the Los Angeles outpost of Mem Global’s Base network, run out of the home of Rabbi Sofia Zway and her husband, Rav Brett Kopin, in the Picfair Village neighborhood of LA. As a “Base,” it functions as a pluralistic Jewish home where young adults are welcomed to celebrate, learn, serve, and connect with one another in an intimate, family-style setting rather than a traditional institutional space.
The community hosts a wide range of programming including Shabbat meals, holiday celebrations, service opportunities, living-room learning sessions, movie nights, and casual hangouts over tea or coffee. Most events are free, with occasional ticketed programs to help offset costs. Rabbi Sofia, a South African-born Reform rabbi with experience serving communities in Cape Town, New York, and New Mexico, focuses on building relationships, pastoral care, and Jewish education with LA’s 20s and 30s crowd.
Base LA is part of the broader Mem Global organization (which also runs Moishe House and other young-adult Jewish community programs), providing vibrant Jewish community, learning, and leadership opportunities for young adults across the country. Those interested can reach out directly to Rabbi Sofia to learn more about upcoming events or to set up a one-on-one conversation.
