About Greensboro Jewish Federation
The Greensboro Jewish Federation has served as the voice and hub of the local Jewish community since its founding in 1940 as the Greensboro United Charities. Over the decades it grew from a small wartime relief effort into a full communal institution, later incorporating the Triad’s Jewish communities and evolving through mergers and name changes into the Federation known today. Guided by the principle that every Jew is responsible for one another, the organization funds and coordinates programs that support Jewish life locally, in Israel, and around the world.
Locally, the Federation supports schools, campus programs, youth groups, community relations work, security for Jewish institutions, and social service programs, while also publishing Shalom Greensboro, a free quarterly community magazine. Its Annual Campaign and endowment funding sustain partner agencies and initiatives ranging from Holocaust remembrance and Israel education to interfaith and civil rights collaboration.
Globally, the Federation has historically mobilized the community to rescue and resettle Holocaust survivors, and later to assist Ethiopian and Russian Jewish immigrants. Today it continues to advocate for Israel, fund overseas humanitarian aid through partners like the Jewish Agency and JDC, and create people-to-people connections between Greensboro and Jewish communities worldwide, including Israel Experience scholarships for teens.
