About Jewish Federation of Springfield, Illinois
The Jewish Federation of Springfield, Illinois is the secular volunteer umbrella organization for the Jewish community in central Illinois. Driven by the adage that ‘All Jews are Responsible, One for the Other,’ the Federation brings together individuals, families, and organizations to strengthen Jewish life locally while supporting Jews in Israel and throughout the world. It is a proud member of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA).
Founded on May 6, 1941, to aid in the resettlement of Jews fleeing war in Europe, the Federation has a long history of responding to Jewish needs near and far. In 1989, it launched Operation Exodus, an emergency campaign to help Jewish citizens from the former Soviet Union resettle in Springfield, reflecting the Federation’s enduring commitment to Jewish continuity and rescue.
The Federation’s programs span education and culture, senior and social services, community relations, and annual fundraising campaigns. Its Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) serves as the public affairs voice of the community, advocating for Israel, combating antisemitism, and fostering interfaith dialogue. Education & Culture programming engages families and children in Jewish holidays, heritage, and identity.
Through its Annual Campaign and a portfolio of legacy funds, the Federation channels philanthropic support to local partner agencies and global Jewish causes alike, embodying the Jewish values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedakah (charity), and Torah (Jewish learning).
