About JVS

JVS of MetroWest is a nonprofit agency based in East Orange, New Jersey, that helps individuals become independent by providing support, services, and vocational training. Founded in 1939 by the Jewish community of Newark, the agency originally served unemployed workers and has since grown into a comprehensive workforce-development organization serving more than 2,000 individuals each year.

As a workforce development organization, JVS helps clients build the skills and training they need to achieve their goals — whether that’s training for a specific job, learning English, earning a GED, or pursuing post-secondary education. Programs include workforce training, literacy, citizenship and ESL classes, disability services, refugee services, corporate training, career counseling, and a private career school.

Through its Perlmutter Student Loan and Shapiro Grant programs, JVS helps Jewish students pay for post-high school education, and through a partnership with the State of New Jersey it offers SNAP recipients employment-related assistance. JVS is a partner agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ.

Using the slogan “Helping People Help Themselves,” JVS works with a diverse range of clients — from single parents receiving public assistance to entry-, mid-, and executive-level job seekers — embodying its mission to repair the world, one person at a time.
