About Magen David
Congregation Magen David of Manhattan (CMDM) is a warm, grassroots Sephardic synagogue located in downtown Manhattan, dedicated to prayer, Torah study, friendship, and community in the classical Syrian Sephardic tradition. Housed at The Sonny and Al Gindi Community Center on Sullivan Street, the congregation was born out of a small Friday-night minyan in 2001 and has grown into a thriving hub for Sephardic Jewish life in the city.
As a congregation, CMDM emphasizes unity and welcomes Jews of all backgrounds to join services and become active members of the community. Its central downtown Manhattan location, close to many of the nation’s leading universities, gives it unique access to a young, engaged student population increasingly seeking vibrant Jewish communal life paired with Torah observance.
CMDM offers daily services, Torah study, holiday meals and celebrations, life-cycle events, and social programming for young professionals, students, and families, functioning as much as a home and movement as a traditional house of worship.
