Met Coucil

Met Council (the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty) is a New York City-based nonprofit social services organization founded in 1972. It is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy, running the largest kosher food pantry network in the country while serving all who are hungry, regardless of background.

Met Council’s ten departments are staffed by experts who serve more than 350,000 clients each year, offering holistic programs that range from 100% affordable housing development to crisis intervention, family violence services, career services, benefits enrollment, home repairs, and support services. The organization pairs experienced social workers with cutting-edge AI tools to cut bureaucracy and speed access to benefits for people in crisis.

Met Council also serves as the umbrella organization for a network of local Jewish Community Councils throughout New York City, providing grassroots support to families in their own neighborhoods. Its mission is to create pathways from crisis to self-sufficiency for the most vulnerable New Yorkers, including immigrants, seniors on fixed incomes, and the un- and under-employed.
