About Shaare Zion Beth-El Congregation
Shaare Zion Beth-El Congregation is a Conservative and Egalitarian synagogue serving the Jewish community of Montreal, Quebec. Founded in the early 1920s as Shaare Zion Congregation and legally incorporated in 1926, the synagogue was one of the first Conservative congregations in the city to count women in the minyan and has since grown into a multigenerational spiritual home. In 2021, it merged with the historic Beth-El congregation, uniting two long-standing Montreal Jewish communities under one roof.
Today, SZBE functions as both a synagogue and a community hub, offering Shabbat and holiday services (in person and via livestream), adult education, lunch-and-learns, B’nai Mitzvah programs, lifecycle support, and social and cultural programming for members of all ages. The congregation is led by its clergy team and supported by an active lay leadership, and it emphasizes inclusivity, tradition, and a strong connection to Israel and Jewish heritage.
With over a century of continuous presence in Montreal, Shaare Zion Beth-El continues to serve as a welcoming ‘second home’ for its members, hosting everything from daily prayer to Simchas, security-conscious community events, and educational programming for children, teens, and adults alike.
